Updo how-to: Master an easy and impressive hairstyle in less than 5 minutes
There’s hundreds of different ways to style your hair in an updo but when it comes to a new summer look, the simple style outlined in this updo how-to is sure to become your next go-to. Part faux bob, part on-trend braided style, this updo has it all.
The talent behind this easy updo is Moroccanoil artistic director Antonio Corral Calero. We met up at the Quartz Crystal Spa at Toronto’s Trump International Hotel to talk about his work at New York Fashion Week and summer hair trends. When it comes to looking polished for a formal summer event—be it a wedding, work party or special date—the less time you spend fussing with your hair the better. Thanks to this updo how-to, you’ll be able to make your hair look red carpet ready in less than five minutes. All you need is some hair spray, a comb, very basic braiding skills and a few bobby pins.
After applying Moroccanoil Hair Treatment ($43, moroccanoil.com) to the length and ends of your hair, grab a section of hair at the crown of your head. Lightly backcomb this hair to make a little “nest” and spray some Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray ($24, moroccanoil.com) to add texture. Don’t over comb—you want this extra volume to look natural! For added drama, change the part of your hair. This easy updo will work with your natural part, but with a deeper part the end result will look more formal.
Like all great summer hairstyles, this easy updo isn’t fussy. When you pull your hair back towards the nape of your neck, Antonio advises that you don’t make it too tight—everything should be roughly in place but still loose. After all, you don’t want to lose the volume at the crown from the backcombing and hairspray. Continue the loose theme as you braid your hair.
The final step in this updo how-to is the addition of movement and texture. Lightly pull a few pieces from the pinned braid. More hairspray will help tame any flyaways and also ensure that your hairstyle will stay in place all night long.
