Vancouver: Rained in

I don’t think I could blog about fashion in Vancouver without mentioning the rain at least once, so let me just get it out of the way right now. Yes, it rains a lot here in Vancouver, and yes, it sometimes affects the way we dress. Unfortunately, practicality and fashion sense are often at odds with one another. But when you do find that perfect piece where form meets function, you know it’s a must have.

To be honest, I was not a big fan of the rain boot trend at first. But after a lifetime of wet feet, I may be coming around to the idea. Not to mention, I seem to be spotting new fashion-conscious styles on the streets everyday. These feminine fits and fine finishes are quickly replacing the chunky, clunky farmer’s friend we once knew. I will even go so far as to say that some of the boots are down right beautiful, such as the weatherproof Aquatalia’s Specchio Patent boots, available at Holt Renfew (737 Dunsmuir St., 604-681-3121, holtrenfrew.com), and Celine’s shiny rubber pair at Browns (700 West Georgia St., 604-632-0102, brownsshoes.com).

But for those who prefer to opt for a more affordable, but no less fashionable find, Ladner’s Jennifer Illsley and Christy Pagani have the answer. Their aptly named e-shop, Rain Co. (shoprainco.com) offers rubber rain boots in enough colours and patterns to suit any personal style. I would recommend keeping it simple with the shiny solid black boot: a mature and classic style suitable for any outfit. But that just seems so incredibly boring, considering the selection! If personality is your priority, then perhaps you might prefer the red gingham (shown, $30) or pink vintage floral boots instead, which are undeniably adorable.

Rain Co. will also have a kiosk at the Richmond’s Summer Night Market (12631 Vulcan Way, Richmond, summernightmarket.com) on September 26, 27 and 28 only. Pay them a visit if you are interested in seeing a few styles in person or confirming your size before ordering online.
