Recently I’ve gone on a full-out binge of Friends, the much-loved ’90s sitcom, and in turn, have reignited my appreciation for the characters’ wardrobes. The show is timeless, entertaining and filled with so many epic looks: Overalls, vests, crop tops and maxi dresses. It’s a fashion feast of everything that my younger self thought I’d be wearing in my twenties. And seeing how the ’90s are back, maybe I wasn’t all that off on my fashion aspirations. Here, 6 of the best looks as seen on the gorgeous ladies of Friends that you can still rock today.

Coloured fur
Although Lisa Kudrow’s character Phoebe was a vegetarian, her fuzzy faux fur jacket was a statement-making staple. Today, this orange coat could easily be mistaken for a topper by Shrimps, and further reinforces the ’90s look. Brighten up the dreary and drab winter days with a faux fur that’s comfortable, and can easily be worn from day or night.

Overalls
Overalls made many an appearance on both Monica and Rachel throughout Season One. To sidestep the inevitable bagginess that comes with overalls, the look was completed with a top tied around the waist (soooo ’90s) to add some shape and definition. Our tip: look for slim, ’70s inspired overalls rather than the bulky styles endorsed on the show for a more flattering result.

Skinny scarves
Monica is known for her neckties. Take for example this scene, where she jazzes up a basic peasant top with simple (yet elegant) knit scarf wrapped around her neck. Not sure how to style a scarf? Check out our tips on How to style a scarf

Chokers
Every celeb under the sun is sporting a choker right now and funny girl Phoebe was clearly the trendsetter. Her quirky look is often topped with statement jewels, including chokers, that range from simple strands to extravagant and bejewelled baubles. Make like Phoebe and be fearless: pair a trendy choker with a bohemian print.

Crop tops
Easily spotted in the series are crop tops (duh). Monica and Rachel bare slivers of skin while hanging out with the gang at Central Park. The key to this trend is knowing how much to expose. Both ladies keep tummy to a minimum, pairing crop tops with high-waisted jeans or miniskirts. Update this look by wearing one under a moto with a pair of high-rise culottes or a midi skirt.

Tops layered under dresses
The ladies of Friends were all fans of spaghetti-strapped, slip dresses. Although not ideal for everyday, their solution was to layer a basic tee underneath. Genius. In addition to keeping things covered, a t-shirt also makes a dainty dress read more casual and grungy. You can try this look out right now by layering a slim turtleneck underneath your favourite dress. Add a pair of chunky boots and you’re good to go.
