We want: Fullum & Holt’s multi-faceted bags and chain-link leather
On Wednesday evening, I rode the elevator up to Toronto’s the Spoke Club to scope out the fall offerings from Montreal leather goods house Fullum & Holt (fullumandholt.com). If you’re not familiar with the brand, here’s a recap: The company is 113 years old, they have an 80,000 square foot factory in Montreal where they construct all the bags, belts and wallets, overseen by creative director Morgan Lackman. They also make bags for Alexander Wang and have a mini-collection from one of the top names in Canadian fashion, Denis Gagnon.

The company puts out beautifully-crafted bags and they know it. To prove the point, Myriam Charbonneau, who works in the F&H factory, stands in a sunny corner constructing bags on a butcher’s block table, carefully perforating leather for a strap loop that will later be attached to one of the brand’s classic ribbed totes.
Best from the presentation are a faceted Jewel Heart Bag with a leather chain-link strap, a lambskin bag from Denis Gagnon featuring some of his miraculous ruching and a smaller piece from Gagnon with a soft, scarf-like lambskin strap, horsetail accent and kissy-lips change purse. Another stand-out is a prim shoulder bag done in thick, sleek bridle leather. According to Rina Sfalcin, F&H’s vice-president of product development, the bag was designed by one of their factory workers–a man who had been making belts with the company for 40 years.
