What FASHION Editor Isabel Slone is Looking Forward to at New York Fashion Week
At FASHION, we split responsibilities of covering Fashion Week between multiple editors. Fashion features editor Isabel Slone will be covering New York Fashion Week for the magazine, associate editor Pahull Bains will be covering London, executive editor Jacquelyn Francis will be covering Paris, and editor-in-chief Noreen Flanagan will be covering Milan. Read on for a glimpse of what Isabel is looking forward to at New York Fashion Week.
- Women’s History Museum show at Gavin Brown’s enterprise
Women’s History Museum is one of the most trangressive fashion labels working today, so it’s only natural that they’re showing their newest pieces in the context of an art gallery rather than a traditional runway show. Designers Amanda McGowan and Mattie Rivkah Barringer established the distinctly uncommercial label three years ago as a means “to communicate an aspect of the feminine experience—the pain, isolation, bonds, sometimes inevitable domesticity and absurdness of it” by creating scraps of couture in their spare time. The entire exhibition, titled “OTMA’s Body,” is shoppable, so there’s the opportunity to own a one-of- kind piece of downtown New York cool for yourself.
- Mansur Gavriel’s See-Now Buy Now Collection
Since their debut in 2013, Mansur Gavriel’s sleek, minimalist calf leather bucket bags have topped every fashion girl’s wishlist. While I’ve always admired their looks and practicality – the whole package! – I’ve never taken the plunge because, try as I might, I’ll never be a bag girl. Any spare money I get my hands on is immediately funnelled towards pricey shoes, which are doomed to be paired with the grubby totes in my wardrobe for the rest of time. (Or until I can afford my white whale, a Prada Saffiano bag, that is.) Since Mansur Gavriel is showing a see-now, buy-now collection for 2018, it might finally be time for me to take the fancy-bag plunge.
- The Modern Vice Showroom
Modern Vice designs the raunchiest, most rock star-worthy boots on the market today. Their Bowie-inspired designs are an instant classic and their Sparrow bootie, with its Victorian-style buttons and chunky square heel is my platonic idea of a boot. Each pair is handmade to order in their midtown Manhattan showroom, and the only reason why I don’t own a pair already is because 1) the Canadian to USD exchange rate stinks, and 2) I can’t commit to buying any pair of boots unless I’ve actually tried them on. I’m hoping there’s time to visit the showroom and snag a pair of these zingy boots for myself.
- Vanessa’s Dumplings
Vanessa’s Dumplings may be served no-frills style on Styrofoam plates with plastic cutlery, but they serve the juiciest, most fulfilling Chinese dumplings that I have ever eaten in my entire life. On top of that, they’re extremely cheap, only $5 for a plate of eight boiled dumplings. The only downside is you have to pay extra for the hot chilli oil, which should be a crime in my opinion.
- Just Walking Around
As someone who once lived in New York for a year, and therefore am a Total Expert on all things NYC, I can definitively say that the best way to experience everything the city has to offer is just simply walking around. Grab a BEC (bacon, egg and cheese on a roll) and watery coffee from a bodega, keep your eyes open for the consummate weirdness that explodes out of every cranny, and occasionally stop to marvel at the stunning architecture that 8 million New Yorkers just casually get to wake up and experience every day. Great, now I’m getting emotional about New York. Good thing I’ll be back there again in T-minus 2.5 days.
