Katie Boland ranks high on our list of young Canadians worth keeping an eye on. In the past few years the Toronto-based actress had made waves with notable roles including one alongside Kat Dennings in the 2010 flick Daydream Nation and in her own web series Long Story, Short (which she wrote and co-produced, by the way). The striking brunette, who has much to be excited about with a role on the new CW series Reign, stopped by our offices to give us an uncensored look at what she carries in her everyday bag. A self-professed iPhone addict, who admits she can’t live without eyeliner and is constantly on the hunt for the perfect red lipstick, is refreshingly down to earth and surprisingly low-maintenance (lipstick, Visa and phone is all that she brings with her to red carpet events). We got up close and personal with Boland’s must-have items as she let us peruse through her purse.

Bag: It’s a Jessica Jensen bag and she’s an amazing Canadian designer and I like it because it’s casual and fancy and it’s a clutch, which is different for me, and nice. I was given the bag last year at TIFF and I’ve actually used it, like constantly, for events and in real life. I’m not organized enough [for a wallet], so everything gets thrown into my purse.
[My favourite makeup brand is] probably Bobbi Brown. I just started using more expensive makeup. I’m 25 so I was like k, finally I’ll buy some expensive makeup. It’s a lot better so I’m happy that I switched over. I couldn’t [live without eyeliner]. This one’s purple. I feel like black is too harsh sometimes so I use the purple one. [For red carpet events] I always like to do the old Hollywood look. So I like a bold lip and a winged liner. Probably my favourite makeup brand for events is MAC because I think it is designed for the camera and to be photographed. So that is generally the look that I go with.

Lipstick: This one is Maybelline and that one’s Revlon and that’s MAC. My favourite is probably a MAC one called “Ruby Woo”. Or what’s Rihanna’s new one? I want to buy that. [They’re all red] and they’re all good. I prefer a matte lip but I do think that a glossy lip is nice as well I just find that it’s harder to keep for a whole night.
Chapstick: That’s actually from a set… from a job I did in Saskatoon called Ferocious. I’ve just kept it ever since. They just gave it to me from set; it was a fun show so I kept it.
Concealer: I think [Bobbi Brown concealer is] the best one. And I think it’s good to carry it in your purse just in case. [I use] concealer over powder, definitely. I’m not skilled enough at makeup to have powder but I need to have just one thing and stick with it.
Mascara: That’s Cover Girl. It’s actually the best mascara I’ve ever found. All my girlfriends and I use it so I highly recommend it.
Hairbrush: It’s just from the Dollar Store. It’s just small and easy to fit in my purse and travel with.

Rockfest Flyer: That is a concert that [my boyfriend] went to yesterday and I had the ticket in my purse. It was fun The Replacements were amazing.
iPhone: I couldn’t live without it. I just got it less than a year ago and my life has completely changed and now I’m addicted to it but I think it is the best phone…. Instagram [is my favourite app]. The iPhone is the only smart phone I’ve ever tried. I feel like it’s easy to understand too, I’m not great at technology so it felt easy. I did have a case but I hated it and thought it made it too heavy so I took it off which is stupid because I drop it like all the time. It don’t know what brand it was but it was sparkly and pink and I hated it and so I got rid of it.
Keys: Those keys are to my apartment. There used to be a Las Vegas keychain but then I lost the Las Vegas part.
Contacts: Yep, I’m blind so I keep contacts in my purse. I don’t wear [eyeglasses] out. Like, I should because it’s better for your eyes I think but I don’t, I never wear my glasses out in public unless I’m sick or tired. I don’t wear sunglasses. I don’t like them on my face, which is weird.
Credit Cards: I never have cash on me. I always want to but then I get cash and then it’s gone like 20 minutes later…. I just watch myself spend it and I don’t like that. I’d rather just put it on my visa. But I do keep change for the TTC. [I don’t have a] Metrocard, which is also stupid, I should probably get one.
