What’s in your bag, Linda Rodin?
by Lesa HannahIt is an indisputable fact that Linda Rodin is the coolest 65-year-old woman in Manhattan; see her campaigns for The Row, J.Crew and the photo shoot in our May issue for further proof. We can only hope to be as awesome as the former model, stylist and now beauty entrepreneur—her facial oil Rodin Olio Lusso may be simple in concept, but highly stylish in execution. The silver haired, perennially fuchsia-lipped Rodin flew to Toronto last month for an event at Prologue Lifestyle, where her line is sold, and where she was monopolized by our staff in a welcoming, fan girl embrace. The next day, our nosy selves met at her hotel, where she showed off her newly purchased Zara flats and graciously allowed us to poke around her Marni purse.

I bought my Marni purse at Saks about three months ago and it was the only one there. Just sitting there by itself and I said “I have to get this bag”. It has that vintage shape and I just thought it was so charming. Silver and then dark brown leather makes it modern and that handle that’s not structured. I just thought it was the perfect bag. And I haven’t seen anybody else carrying it. Now, I just don’t like that—I don’t want to have a Chanel bag. I do love Prada bags but I like to have the one-offs. I’m using it all the time and I’m ruining it. That’s the problem; it’s so sensitive

I put my Make Up For Ever Aqua Lip pencil all over my lips. It’s waterproof in “C16” and I don’t go anywhere without it. I probably carry five at a time. First I put on Fran Wilson MoodMatcher in “Green”. It’s like a Chapstick but it stains your lips. Then I put on my pencil.
Then I put on my By Terry lipstick. It’s called “Pink Party”. It just has a nice texture and it’s creamy. I used to wear red, but I stopped wearing lipstick when I was about 30. Then I about five years ago, I started wearing a more natural version of this, and then I just got brighter and brighter. I said “Why not?”—I was getting paler and older and I thought that I wanted something, a little pop of colour.
The YSL gloss is for lips but I use it for eyeshadow. I like when it has that 1930s liquid eye shadow thing and I love anything that sparkles. I wear it mostly at special times.
Somebody gave me the YSL aubergine mascara as a gift. I thought it was so beautiful. To be honest I I’ve been using Maybelline Great Lash since I was 16. This is just fancy.
The pill case is for my Advil. I have a bad back. Sometimes it’s really bad when I’m travelling. I got the case in LA in a drugstore but I’ve seen them in New York.

I created my oil because I couldn’t really find anything on the market that I love. I always had a lot of different oils, like evening primrose and one day I decided to mix them up. I started bringing it to photo shoots and all the models and makeup artists loved it. One day my nephew came into my apartment and asked what I was doing and what I charge for it. I said “I don’t charge anything” and he said “that’s really stupid’. So he ordered some beakers and measured the formula with a Sharpie. Bob Recine, who makes my hair oil, I would give it to him and he gave it to everybody from Gwyneth Paltrow to Lady Gaga. Tom Pecheux has been a huge fan, he’s been wonderful. And I found this font that I really liked at the flea market on a luggage tag.
This is an antique bottle that I found in a store 10 years ago on the Upper East Side on Lexington Avenue. I never knew what I was going to put in it but I broke the top off of a bottle of my own perfume so I just poured the rest in here and now voila. I’ve got my own perfume in it, the new one.
This is a bottle of the new one, bis. It’s a total departure from my first one, which smells exactly like my products. This is just a one off I wanted to do for myself. It’s an ode to my mother. My parents went out every Saturday night and I was always really nervous they wouldn’t come home. So I would take my mother’s coat and wrap myself up in it and smell her. It smells like my mother’s powder puff, her 1950s lipstick, a little bit of toasted sugar, pepper and Juicy Fruit.
This is a travel size of my oil and it’s obviously gotten very bruised by my lipstick pencil. I usually don’t carry the big one but I did cause I’m staying overnight.

This is my Carven date book. My dress last night was Carven. I think they make the nicest things. I just have to write everything down. Otherwise I can’t remember anything. And I like my handwriting. I’ve kept them, I’ve got ones from 20 years ago, every page filled. I usually use Smythson—I miss the format but I had to buy this one because I love it.
That’s my business card thing. I love Acne, I love their clothes, I just love the colour and I’m always trying to be professional with my business cards.
I buy covers for my iPhone like doll clothes. I must have about 40. I change them whenever I get bored or I see one on the street—I buy them for like five dollars. I have furry ones, patent leather ones, I have one that’s a Chanel handbag. It’s really like changing a doll’s dress. But I hate the iPhone. It does have a better camera but who cares. I find the typing—I cannot stand it. On the Blackberry, you could do it walking with your eyes closed.
This Baggu bag was sent to me as gift by Beauty Habit—they have a have wonderful online store that sells my products. I love it, I love daisies. It feels very 60s. I like anything that’s not from today. I like old fashioned.

I just bought the Juicy Fruit here. I don’t chew gum but yesterday I just wanted to remind myself of the smell. Of course the box changed, the packaging, everything. But it does have a similar—well from where I’m coming from with it, that was definitely one of the things that was in the mix of my mother.
