Amy Nadine and Kristin Ess are the two talented ladies behind The Beauty Department, a hair and makeup blog that breaks down on-trend looks and posts them as bite-sized tutorials. Based out of Los Angeles, the site has become extremely popular thanks to its adorable graphics, practical advice and the occasional inclusion of a celebrity guest-star within the content.
Amy Nadine, who covers all things makeup for the site, and Kristin Ess, who does everything hair, started The Beauty Department when they realized that easy-to-follow hair and makeup tutorials weren’t getting published elsewhere. They turned to one of their top clients, Lauren Conrad, to help promote the site and, well, the rest is history. If you see a nail art Instagram photo or a hair tutorial on Pinterest, chances are it came from The Beauty Department. So when Amy and Kristin were in Toronto for Unilever’s Beauty and Grooming event we jumped at the chance to see what the two beauty experts keep in their bags. We found camera-shaped iPhone cases, limited-edition wallets and lots and lots of makeup—among many other interesting things. Are you ready to explore?

This Celine bag I got when I was in Paris. I got it for my birthday and I came back [to Los Angeles] and I had never seen it, there was no Celine bag of this sort in the US. I liked it cause it had this silhouette and it kind of looked like a woman’s hip to me. Then later on I looked at it and was like “it kind of looks like the Kool-Aid man too!” But anyway, it was one of the best things. I had actually had a little problem with the zipper sticking at first and I looked for a Celine store, and the only one was in Boca Raton in Florida and New York, so I was like “how am I going do that from Los Angeles?” but I mean that was how hard it was to track that bag down.
But now obviously every single person in the world has this bag, but mine’s like the grandma! You can see how torn up this thing is, I literally put it through so much and it doesn’t even stand anymore. You know how it stands up normally? It’s like a hard shell? No, it’s like a joke, it’s so busted up! Sometimes I wanna go look at the number and see what batch it was made in.

The Bose headphones for travelling are my favourite things in the world. They’re noise cancellers for babies and obnoxious people.
My Rebecca Minkoff wallet I love because it says “Plastic” and “Paper” inside, not that I follow it, I just throw everything in there. Love that wallet.
Cards, because I just learned how to play Rummy.
The iPhone case, there’s a button so it actually takes photos. And it comes in different colours, it’s so cool.

I have this new product, Restorsea cream, which is like what a glycolic acid would do to your skin, like a moisturizer and that element. So it kind of takes away the dead skin which is really cool and it just stops you don’t have to wash it off.
This is my new favourite brush, it is so cheap but it literally is like a scalp massage every time you use it. And feel this, they bend so easily but it gives you the craziest feeling and also it de-tangles, that’s what its for, it’s a de-tangler brush. My favourite, favourite, favourite brush.
This bronzer, so I’m not quite as pale in the winter time. And I’ve got these for travel obviously, the St. Ives Fresh Skin wipes.

This bag, which is my favorite thing, it’s Zara and I think it’s meant to be a clutch. I love this bag. If I’m going out at night, I can dump half the makeup out and put my money in and go. You don’t want to transfer your makeup completely, so I just leave half of my makeup on the table and then just put it back in afterwards.
Makeup-wise, obviously I have Vaseline. This is my current favourite Stila palette of eyeshadow, because during holiday that’s my favourite thing to have dark and sparkle together is ideal. The Dior brush is pretty amazing, which I use with the bronzer. The powder goes on very light with that brush, like not too dense. And the Tarte lip balm is a favourite. Tom Ford foundation I’m really obsessed with because it’s very, very moisturizing. Amy [Nadine] introduced me to that actually.
The Nars double-ended lip stuff: it’s discontinued and it is the best red. You put two coats, and literally you can drink champagne all night and it’s so rich still. It kind of looks pink on the first and then when you put it on the second time it is very, very, very dark red.
And then I just have a plethora of brushes.

My purse I picked up at Topshop last winter when they were having their closing sale, I thought it was different and like nothing I had ever seen had before, it’s kinda wintery.
I wear the cherry lip stain every day because my lips are light—like I have no colour to my lips and I just look so washed out—and this works the best of any stain. And I love this Dior one because it’s more of a balm. I call it my mood balm because if I’m hot headed it goes on really bright, but if not it just looks like a balm.

The wallet is made by Rebecca Minkoff, she’s a friend of mine, and she never made it into a wallet, it didn’t do well at the shows. So she made it into a clutch and then gave one of the [original] wallets to Lauren [Conrad] and myself. And every time I use it people compliment me so I’m like “Rebecca! You made the wrong decision!” (Laughs)
My Samsung Galaxy 3: I’m an anti-iPhone girl, the case I put stickers on it. (‘Cause I’m 12!)
And I unapologetically love Celine Dion, so this is my lucky Celine Dion pen.

This moisture stick is vegan and pure and natural, If you feel it, it’s just really moisturizing and with organic oils and butter. My chin always gets chapped with my scarf so I just throw this on.
My mineral foundation I’m obsessed with. It’s actually what they sell in the plastic surgery office, for women who have laser and need to cover up—so it has really strong coverage, but it’s super moisturizing. I’m almost 40 so I like to have something that’s really moisturizing and gives good coverage.

My favourite mascara is Armani Eyes to Kill.
The Charlotte Ronson perfume is Julia, it smells like Coppertone which I’m obsessed with. It reminds me of being on the beach when I was young.
The Jemma Kidd Stardust Cream in “Comet,” it’s the cutest thing, glittery awesome. It’s the perfect amount of glitter where I don’t look like a show girl but it still adds a point of interest to the eye. I love this smoky taupe colour.
And I have a Laura Mercier Cake Liner in “Dark Brown.” I don’t like black on my face because I am so fair, but dark brown works well with my blue eyes because of the whole colour wheel contrast thing.
