When it comes to clogs, go with the Swedes
The New York Times T Magazine blog recently ran a story on Oregon-based “clogmaster” Cecilia Tidlund. Asked what she thought of the sometimes-ridiculous, sometimes-amazing clogs that appeared on the Chanel, Miu Miu, and Louis Vuitton runways, the Swedish founder of one of America’s first bespoke clog companies said, “I’d rather people get into a bad fashion clog than a ballet flat or flip fop. Flimsy shoes are ruining people’s feet. I’ve seen 12 year olds with bunions.” Alas! An orthopedic specialist that endorses fashion footwear! Since then, I’ve stashed my Havaianas in my beach bag (where they’ll stay for the summer) and picked up a pair of Hasbeens from Umeboshi (3638 Main St., 604-909-8225, umeboshishoes.com), another Swedish brand that launched in 2006 after 300 pairs of 1970s deadstock were found in a factory. I love the high-heeled jodhpurs ($398) in natural leather (which becomes a delicious caramel with more wear) and now have my eyes set on the super-high slips in black—after all, you can never have too many good-for-you pairs of shoes.
