Who Won Day One of TIFF 2018? Este Haim
Chris Pine’s Outlaw King might have been the most anticipated event of TIFF’s opening day, but it was California sister act Haim that stole the night. Specifically, it was the eldest sister of the group: Este Haim, who is not an actress, but thinks she should be. “This isn’t a face for radio,” she said in her performance at the kickoff RBCxMusic party at RBC House, which hosts a series of film junkets, celebrity panels, star-studded parties and music performances throughout the festival, “this is a face that belongs on the silver screen.” We agree.
In my interview with the three Haim sisters before their show—which will be posted on our site later this week—we chatted about The Goofy Movie, Diane Keaton and Este’s ability to quote the entire Selena film. It’s sort of her party trick: “Some people can open beer bottles with their teeth,” she says. “I can do Selena.” Between performing songs off their 2017 album Something to Tell You and covers of Fleetwood Mac, she gave the audience a small taste of her Selena scene work.
Este—who is known as the most expressive (and chatty) of the group—also laid out some quality dad jokes from the stage. (Read: “you can tune a bass, but you can’t tuna fish.” HA.) But perhaps the best moment of the night was when the sisters covered Shania Twain’s “That Don’t Impress Me Much.” When she sang the lyric “Okay, so you’re Brad Pitt,” she subbed in TIFF heartthrob Timothée Chalamet. Which pretty much confirmed something I already knew: I really want to be a Haim sister.
Here are a few photos from inside the event:
