Wino Forever! A Look Back at the Screen Queen’s Most Iconic Looks

Wino Forever. The ill-fated tattoo that Winona Ryder’s former fiancée Johnny Depp once inked on his bicep to commemorate his love for the sophisticated star kind of says it all, no?

Ever since her debut as a child actress in 1986’s Lucas, Ryder has gone on to portray some of the most memorable characters in screen history – Lydia Deetz in Beetlejuice, Susannah Kaysen in Girl, Interrupted – and became one of the most beloved movie stars of her generation for both her preternatural beauty and embodiment of peculiar characters who always felt slightly out of place.

Offscreen too, Ryder captivated the world with her borderline gothic style that primarily consisted of black gowns on the red carpet, 90s grunge perfection and the uncanny ability to pull off a pixie cut. Ryder’s glamorous yet slightly awkward public persona provided an alternative pinnacle of beauty for women who chafed against the orthodoxy of peroxide blonde. (Writer Alanna Massey described this phenomenon in a 2015 essay called “Being A Winona In a World Made for Gwyneths.”)

In honour of the star’s 47th birthday, we’ve gathered a host of of the most iconic outfits she’s ever worn – both on and off the red carpet. Wino Forever, indeed.
