The forest can be a dark, mysterious place full of gnarled trees, strange creatures and things that go bump in the night. Backstage this season, makeup artists chose a palette reflective of that eerie world, using colours that resembled moss, mud, mushrooms, and even rodents at Oscar de la Renta, where Gucci Westman enhanced eyes with what she called a mouse-inspired shadow.

Things got mystical at Alberta Ferretti, where Lloyd Simmonds painted lustrous, gold-rimmed eyes inspired by elves in the forest, while at Alexander McQueen, Pat McGrath’s owl-like lashes and brows were part of a “Beauty and the Beast” look. Hair-wise, a literal interpretation of the woodlands surfaced at Marni, where Paul Hanlon twisted mousse-soaked hair into shapes reminiscent of tree branches and birds’ nests, while at Issey Miyake, Eugene Souleiman gave sleek buns a texture he likened to grains of wood. It’s time to make like a tree and leaf.
