The Bay makes a Blanket Statement with ten Canadian designers
Back in October, we told you about the Bay’s new line of Canadiana–The Hudson’s Bay Company Collection–the brings canoes, paddles and point blankets together with collaborations with Canadian fashion names such as Pink Tartan, Harricana and Virginia Johnson. The line launched Tuesday night at a packed cocktail party where guests noshed on de rigueur nouveau comfort food–grilled cheese sandwiches with homemade ketchup, potatoes with bison tartare and maple syrup poured over freezer-made snow. The big attraction of the evening was the official unveiling of ten one-of-a-kind coats–together dubbed The Blanket Statement–that the Bay commissioned from a group of Canadian designers who played with the iconic point blanket. Toronto: Gaudet is bringing colour back
Design duo Norm and Gio Gaudet (gaudetfashionhouse.com) have one goal: to get you to ditch that basic black winter coat in favour of one of their bold and bright pieces. The pair, who specializes in hand felting techniques, showed their first collection at LG Fashion Week on Wednesday. They took a moment after the show to talk to us backstage about Canadian winters, poppies and the baby of the family.

Edmonton: Survival of the warmest
When the mercury drops to 30 degrees below zero, I often long for the warm sand beaches of Trinidad and Tobago. My only consolation is beautiful winter wear I can flaunt while braving the blizzards. In fact, one of the primary reasons I adore living in Alberta, Edmonton in particular, is the four distinct seasons we have, which, for me, translates into four fabulous wardrobes (and some multi-tasking transitional pieces).

Autumn anticipation
By Natalia Ksiazek
On my way to work this morning, I finally felt a bit of fall in the air. It may have just been my anticipation to wear autumn’s chunky cropped-sleeved knits and peep-toe booties getting the best of me, but in any case, summer is definitely over and it got me thinking about my favourite fall piece: the coat. With so many styles to choose from this season, one doesn’t have to commit. Good thing too, because up-and-coming Canadian designer Mellinda-Mae Harlingten’s (mellinda-mae.com) latest coat collection makes it hard to pick just one.

The Perfect Fall Coat
When August approaches, I get this defeatist attitude and make comments like, “It’s already winter.” I start to notice how night sets in minutes earlier with each passing week. And if that wasn’t bad enough, I begin to feel the lovely first signs of seasonal affective disorder. On the bright side, fall is my favourite fashion season, and one way I can combat the terminal winter condition is to piece together the perfect winter wardrobe.
