It’s not every day that you find yourself standing in a cabana with Jake Gyllenhaal and Isabella Rossolni but that’s just the sort of magic that TIFF brings to town. My close-proximity to the scruffy-hot actor and international star was all thanks to the after party for Enemy, which is actually Gyllenhaal’s second film to premiere at TIFF 2013. Held on the rooftop patio of Chase, the Hugo Boss-hosted event swelled to max capacity—considering that director Denis Villeneuve shot the film in Toronto there was a lot of local cast and crew on hand to toast the premiere. Sadly, the one local who wasn’t in attendance was Enemy star Sarah Gadon, who had to miss the festival due to scheduling conflicts.

The unique style of designer Renata Morales has earned her props from art-loving fashion circles, including Grammy-winning Canadian band Arcade Fire. Here, she shares her favourite shops and the story behind Denis Gagnon’s infamous eyewear.

You’ve moved from prêt-à-porter to designing exclusively for private clients?
“That’s what I enjoy doing. It’s more elaborate stuff, where all the work is really ornate. I’ve also done costumes for [Oscar-nominated film director] Denis Villeneuve’s short, Next Floor.”

How cool is it working with Arcade Fire?
“I work with them because we’re friends. It’s not costume-oriented, except those Tron suits they wore on SNL.”

    The designed life

Toronto’s annual Interior Design Show (January 27 to 30, interiordesignshow.com) is a blow-up labyrinth of commercial and sponsor exhibits, indie design experiments and much spectacle in-between. On opening night, 20 one-off Vitra Panton chairs will be up for charity auction, all reimagined by big names like design legend Bruce Mau and fashion darlings Greta Constantine. In an exhibit titled Sibling Revelry, Sarah Richardson dreams up a space with her younger brother, Theo Richardson (who happens to be one-third of the hot N.Y.C. design trio Rich Brilliant Willing), while ladywear designer David Dixon worked with his brother Glenn Dixon, an interior designer. For discoveries, you can’t miss the Studio North exhibit, featuring bright young talent like Montreal graffiti art object–maker Trash Bonbon and Toronto eco-minded, sleight-handed furniture designer Evan Bare. —Sarah Nicole Prickett
