  • Polaris Prize

The Polaris Prize shortlist nominees were announced this morning at the Drake Hotel by Polaris founder Steve Jordan. My shekels are on Plants and Animals for this cool Canadian prize.

  • Wild weekend

Well my fashionable friends, I should’ve known this was going to be a crazy one, especially since the torrential downpour on Friday almost ruined my birthday plans. But, always the fun loving gal, I, along with my besties and my handsome BF, stuck it out and managed to have an amazing time. I think maybe I’ll be fully recovered by my next birthday.

  • Flash freeze

You may have heard: Luminato’s on this week. I went to the Giorgio Armani opening-night shindig at the R.O.M. on Friday with a couple of the FASHION crew. After a quick tour around the party, we ensconced ourselves in the VVIP room, which was outfitted with makeup touchup stations and a small cadre of living dolls outfitted avec Giorgio. (To get the full scoop on the party, including the celeb quotient, check out Michelle’s Fashionable Life blog.)

  • Slimming Mirrors, Flattering Lights

The Awkward Stage: Slimming Mirrors, Flattering Lights (Mint Records)

No, I did not pick this album because of the title—though who would say no to slimming mirrors and flattering lights?—but because of the pretty indie pop turned out by The Awkward Stage (a.k.a. Vancouver multi-instrumentalist Shane Nelken and his band of merry men, which includes Tygh Runyan (The Beans) on lead guitar and Chris Mitchell (of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra) on trumpet).

  • Remix Romance Vol. 2

Sally Shapiro: Remix Romance Vol. 2 (Paper Bag Records)

The world just can’t seem to get enough of this Swedish sweetheart. This is the second remix album out of Sally Shapiro’s 2007 debut Disco Romance (which we, like, covered and stuff before other people. Just sayin’).

  • Celeb Spy: It’s getting hot in here

As summer heats up, so does celeb-spotting season.

Hilary Swank and Amelia co-star Ewan McGregor were filming at the Carlu on College Street one lovely Sunday afternoon. The film, based on the life of Amelia Earhart who disappeared while flying over the Pacific Ocean in 1937, also stars Richard Gere and Virginia Madsen and is being directed by Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding).

  • I Know You’re Married But I’ve Got Feelings Too

Martha Wainwright: I Know You’re Married But I’ve Got Feelings Too (MapleMusic)

Yes, yes, she’s Rufus’s little sister, and while this gives a girl a lot to live up to at family sing-a-longs, when your parents are Loudon Wainwright III and Kat McGarrigle, music is simply in your genes (or in Martha’s case, the tiny dress she wears while lounging on a groovy couch on the cover of her second solo album).

  • Soft Power

Gonzales: Soft Power (Arts & Crafts)

Okay, I admit it, it was the shimmering classic disco boogie sound of “Let’s Ride” that got me hooked on this album, but there’s a lot to love from Gonzales, the electro prankster showman/Grammy-nominated arranger/producer (ever heard of someone called Feist?)/multi-instrumentalist. What? You don’t play drums on Iggy Pop songs too? Whatsamatta’ you?

  • Episode 28: The next move is yours

Audrina and Justin are checking out a gorgeous loft in downtown L.A. “I feel like I’m so far away from everyone,” Audrina says. “But think about it—don’t you always try to get away from where you’re at right now?” Justin asks, sounding entirely too reasonable for someone whose sunglass arms are wedged in his ears. “I live by myself right now in the guesthouse, so it’s like I might as well get my own place,” Audrina concedes.

  • Episode 27: No Place Like Home

Heidi walks into Brent Bolthouse’s office and gets down to business. “I know that you guys have been expanding everywhere… I wanna be a part of this company as much as I can, so I would love to get my hands in there and make myself as available to you as much as I can,” she says, “especially if that means travelling or relocating.” Who wouldn’t want to give more responsibility to such an eloquent person, who’s not at all using her job as a way to escape her problems?

  • The Odd Couple

    Gnarls Barkley: The Odd Couple
    Warner

It was pretty much impossible to escape multi-instrumentalist Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton and vocalist Cee-Lo Green’s massive hit “Crazy,” from their 2006 debut, St. Elsewhere. Seemingly cheerful on the surface—hello party song!—it became weirder the more you listened to it and on their sophomore outing, the duo have definitely taken this darker side and run with it.

  • Episode 20: Back to L.A.

"Sometimes going away gives you a different perspective on things. But when you come home, everything is different," Lauren says in her opening voiceover. She illustrates this point by letting Audrina know that she’s over Brody now. Yep, she’s totally over him. Doesn’t care about his new "girlfriend" at all. Certainly won’t cause a scene the next time she sees him. Nope.
