Last night’s MTV Video Music Awards was certainly full of news, from Beyoncé’s big baby reveal to Katy Perry’s four outfit changes to Lady Gaga’s first public appearance as her drag alter ego Joe Calderone, who had previously only been seen on the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan last September. Who though, tops the list as the best dressed?

Last night co-host and performer Selena Gomez brought out the heavy embroidery during the MMVAs, wearing the same blinged-out dress Katy Perry wears on our Summer cover. The jewel-encrusted Dolce & Gabbana mini combines three of summer’s hottest trends: lace, white and lots of leg. And so, the fashion battle begins!

Our favourite California girl made the dress fun and sexy, pairing it with colourful rings, purple polish and a pop of fuchsia lipstick.

In the other corner, Selena’s subdued makeup, messy updo and subtle dangling earrings make the risqué hemline seem downright wholesome. Not that it’s a bad thing. We like our 18-year-olds looking, you know, 18.

Year after year, music’s most passionate fans tune in to the MuchMusic Video Awards, the most intimate and out-of-control awards show around where anything and everything goes. The 2011 MMVAs exceeded all expectations, with not one but two performances by priestess of pop Lady Gaga, five outfit changes by co-host Selena Gomez, a surprise tag-team appearance by Canada’s sweethearts Drake and Justin Bieber, and a slew of super-high-energy performances.

Backstage the performers, presenters and VIPs mingled. Vampire Diaries’ Nina Dobrev told us that the first thing she does when she returns to Toronto, her hometown, is eat street meat, with “lots of ketchup.” Presenter Cassie Scerbo of Make It or Break It found herself star struck, but luckily, she had her mom in tow to keep her focused. Performers and Pop Video of the Year winners Down With Webster wandered the lounge in matching mechanics’ jumpsuits embellished with strips of LED lights, crediting the Beastie Boys as their sartorial inspiration.

The stars descended upon Toronto last night for the 2011 MuchMusic Video Awards. The show is always one big blowout bash and this year’s show didn’t disappoint. Neither did the red carpet. From Avril Lavigne in signature black rocker gear to co-host Selena Gomez posing pretty in a cream ruffled mini dress, there was plenty of eye candy as far as the cameras could see. This Sunday, all eyes will be on the 2011 MuchMusic Video Awards, the channel’s annual celebration of a year in music, videos and, of course, its stars! If the stellar lineup—including Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez, Avril Lavgine and Vampire Diaries’ Nina Dobrev—is any indication, this year’s show is certain to kill it. While we’ll have to wait until the night of to see what the stars are wearing, we had a little something to do with what host Lauren Toyota will be donning. The MTV Movie Awards never fail to bring out the best of young Hollywood for an action-packed night of candid humour, wham-bam performances and, of course, killer red carpet style. Last night, starlets like Hailee Steinfeld, Kristen Stewart, Blake Lively and Leighton Meester stepped out of their fashion comfort zones to rock the red carpet in everything from a Louis Vuitton suit to a safety-pinned Balmain mini. And its lucky they looked so slammin’⎯they had to keep up with the onstage antics (a certain steamy kiss between Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner comes to mind).
