Montreal shop notes: Game on!
Just in time to hit the courts, Lacoste (1011 Ste-Catherine St. W., 800-798-1212, lacoste.ca) will open a new concept boutique in July on Montreal’s main drag. The slick two-level emporium joins sister concept shops in Paris, Berlin and New York. Look for the brand’s trendy new line L!VE for women, which debuts this fall. Game on!

Toronto shop notes: Max Mara flagship store coming soon!
Shoppers, take note! Max Mara is building a new flagship store (151 Bloor St. West, maxmara.com), set to open this August. In the meantime, visit its temporary Hazelton Lanes home (55 Avenue Rd., upper level, 416-928-1884) this May through July, because it’s never too early to start shopping for fall. Camel coat, anyone?

Beauty most wanted: Hand in hand with Lush
In its early days, Lush couldn’t afford bottles for its shampoos, so it made a hard copy of its hair wash that didn’t need a vessel. The brand’s latest compact offering, Tiny Hands Solid Serum ($6, lush.ca), features a skin-softening trifecta—shea butter, aloe and argan oil. We were skeptical, but when we rubbed the bar between our palms, it totally worked.

Summer read: Get a Life
All ad campaigns are not created equal. Despite their commercial origins, some creep into the realm of contemporary art—particularly when shot by a photographer as singular as Juergen Teller for a client as fearless as Vivienne Westwood.

A Turkish tale: Behind the scenes at FASHION’s photo shoot in and around the sun-splashed Mediterranean city of Antalya
We’d been dreaming since December of ’70s supermodels roaming through ruins with big hair, big jewels and even bigger attitudes. We couldn’t stop thinking about Diana Ross in the 1975 film Mahogany, or the sophisticated world travellers who strode down the Saint Laurent, Pucci and Ferragamo spring runways. It all led to a transatlantic travel itch, and Turkey proved to be our fashion fantasy come true.

Toronto shop notes: Caftan Queen
5 MINUTES WITH CAFTAN QUEEN JOANNE SALT
Fashion photographer-turned-designer Joanne Salt is determined to make Tulum, Mexico, the next fashion capital of the world. (She moved there four years ago for love and in the process started her label, Josa Tulum.) Launched last year at Joseph, her tiny boutique in Tulum, this Canadian expat’s vintage-inspired, one-size-fits-all caftan collection landed on Holt Renfrew’s racks this summer, including an exclusive striped version (shown).
Why did you decide to launch a line of caftans?
“I have an extensive vintage collection and I would wear them and get compliments from celebrities and fashion clientele, so I thought maybe I could come up with some new designs.” -
Beauty most wanted: The straightening treatment
Ever since Health Canada red flagged Brazilian blowouts, finding a salon that offers the straightening treatment feels like undercover spy work. An accessible (and formaldehyde-free) alternative, Living Proof Straight Styling Hairspray ($34, at Sephora) is an aerosol version of polyfluoroester—the MIT-born hair-smoothing molecule that blocks frizz in the face of humidity.

Vancouver shop notes: Hotel shopping hot spot
The triumphant restoration of the 64-years-young, Tiki-inspired Waldorf Hotel (1489 E. Hastings St., 604-253-7141, waldorfhotel.com) makes it suitable for the Rat Pack, but luckily, it’s playing to the fashion pack too. At lobby level, the gift shop has gone “Surfin’ Safari” for summer with the likes of Cuchè swimsuits, Brixton straw hats, Red Flag Design sailcloth bags, and Alexandra Cassaniti sunglasses and neoprene leggings.
