Sundance: Day five
Everybody on Main is sluggish today. The weekend has visibly drained many Sundancers of their energy, and, with a chunk of the celebs flying back home to Hollywood today, the festival of its momentum. I start the day slowly with a couple of back-to-back morning screenings, before moving on to the day’s big interviews.

Weekend in Now Town
By Kate MacLennan
Deafened by persistent rumours that Chanel, Vuitton and other luxe labels are scouting for the perfect locations from which to provide Albertans with their divine indulgences—and flummoxed by the fact Calgary got Sephora and H&M before Vancouver—I recently hopped a WestJet flight and made my way to Calgary for 48 hours of investigative journalism.

It’s all in the bag
By Kate MacLennan
Almost a decade ago, back when I was but a fashion kitten (not a full-blown fashion feline), I made the gross miscalculation of wearing a vintage Roots T-shirt whilst strolling through Sydney’s Paddington Market on a trip to Australia. There was nothing wrong with the shirt in and of itself—I even thought I looked pretty cute having paired it with denim capris (which were just gaining popularity then).

Episode Three: The Evaluation
Last week: Spencer surprised Heidi with graffiti in the living room and a “high-end” engagement ring. Audrina dated a guy named Justin, whose friends inexplicably refer to him as “Bobby.”
Hillside Villas. Audrina has scheduled a date with Justin Bobby and invites Lauren along. It’s obvious Lauren’s not a huge J.B. fan, but the normally commitment-phobic Audrina’s considering making him her first real boyfriend, so she’s willing to give him a chance. “You’re a smart girl; you know what you’re doing,” Lauren says. Audrina nods unconvincingly.

All that glitters isn’t (yellow) gold
Strut your stilettos into any swish nightspot of late and you’ll find that amid the usual bar banter and eyelash batting, the style set is looking at the world through rose-coloured glasses. From the Barbie-inspired bubbly (pink champers is the trendy new tipple) to the swingy frocks in petal and high-powered pink, it appears that everything is coming up roses. So it isn’t surprising that the ladies-with-the-latest are warming to the trend of rose gold jewellery.

Do the Charleston for charity
Like any true fashionista, I am obsessed with all super chic treats in the world of wardrobe and other wowable finds.
My amour du jour is the recently rehabbed darling of the New York fashion scene, Marc Jacobs, and his Spring 2007 ready-to-wear collection. With its bejewelled headbands, dainty drop waists and megawatt metallics, it is official that the ’20s are trendy again. But where can a dame don a cloche hat and a flapper-inspired frock without looking like a Louise Brooks blunder? The answer arrived on my desk last week, and this dame thinks it is going to be the cat’s pyjamas.

Bringing sexy back, Italian-style
When Charles Dickens wrote, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” he must have been referring to the weeks leading up to the holiday season. A frazzled yet fabulous time filled with eggnog, Amex bills and excess.
So naturally, what happened while riding the subway last week (while visions of Holt Renfrew danced in my head) came as a great surprise–a divine intervention. Pasted above an ad for a shopping mall, I noticed a sticker that read, “Consumption does not fill the void.” And suddenly, standing there with my parcels (a haute hostess prezzie and a fab new pair of bejewelled strappies to deck the halls in), I wondered: When did consumption begin to consume us?

Objects of desire
A recent Saturday morning stroll aprés the perfect blowout turned into a stride when raindrops began to fall. Ducking into a used bookstore (entre nous: I actually prefer the word vintage–it sounds less “dusty”) for a much-needed coiffure cover, I discovered the book Dear Scott, Dearest Zelda: The Love Letters of F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald (available at amazon.ca). Reading countless pages of “dearest darling” and “my truest love” made me think: In our march for equality, have we managed to stamp out chivalry altogether?

Welcome to Talk Is Chic, your weekly fashion fix of all things fabulous!
With the close of another star-studded Toronto film fest, I needed a hit of glamour to keep my celebrity fixation running on high. Like any good jewellery junkie, I went for a double dose of Liz Taylor and curled up with Butterfield 8 and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
