Today in really, really weird beauty news: Oprah’s favourite moisturizer is made from human foreskins
Ingredients in skincare products are becoming increasingly inventive and unusual—so much so that many people may actually have no idea what is in the moisturizer they use everyday. But for Oprah Winfrey, a peculiar and, quite frankly, bizarre ingredient in one of her favourite face creams has the TV personality in hot water. At a live event in Vancouver last Thursday, a small group of protesters were outside the stadium to oppose Oprah’s endorsement of a SkinMedica anti-wrinkle cream that is allegedly made from human foreskins. (Yes, you read that right: human foreskins.)
The product in question is SkinMedica TNS Recovery Complex , which promises to “rapidly restore the skins’ barrier and moisture balance.” It contains foreskin fibroblast—otherwise known on the company’s website as “Human Fibroblast Conditioned Media” that reportedly helps improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, as well as overall skin tone and texture. Oprah has publicly endorsed the cream and encouraged her legions of fans and celebrity friends to try it.

Afternoon beauty fix: Does anti-aging jargon leave you confused? Here’s what you need to know
I’m lost amongst the variety of anti-aging creams on the shelf at the drugstore—what do I need to be looking for in a preventative product?
It’s a confusing world when it comes to beauty—buzzwords like “retinol” and “collagen” are tossed around as though their meanings are commonly known. Don’t worry, I’m here to simplify. -
Afternoon beauty fix: Fear crow’s feet around your eyes? We have a fix for you!
I am plagued by the onset of wrinkles around my eyes. I always wear sunscreen, sleep well, and drink lots of water. What gives?
Not only are your eyes a window to your soul, they’re also the best indicator of the effects that external and environmental factors have on your skin. Because the area surrounding your eyes is so fine and delicate, it’s more vulnerable to the wrath of toxins, free radicals, and sun damage—which, if left undefended, result in crow’s feet and loose skin. -
Afternoon beauty fix: Say goodbye to premature fine lines with some Vitamin C
I realize I shouldn’t compare myself to others, but I’ve noticed that my skin is showing more signs of aging than my girlfriends’. We’re the same age! Why do I have crow’s feet when they don’t, and what do I need to do differently?
Your slightly different skin could be due to a whole slew of thing—including genetics, more time spent in the sun when you were a kid, less SPF usage during your entire life, or more exposure to environmental stressors and chemicals. Instead of fixating on the past, focus on your future—cells slow their regeneration as we get older, making it more difficult for our skin to look youthful and bright. Nip your premature aging in the bud by exfoliating frequently and being extremely indulgent with moisturizer and anti-oxidants. Instead of scrubbing your face with a coarse cream, use something that’s heavily loaded in Vitamin C—it’s a natural exfoliant and way less grating on sensitive skin types, but also permeates skin easily to reduce damage that’s been done. We like Le Mieux Vita-C Clear Skin Pads ($25, lemieuxcosmetics.com). The tiny, individual pads come pre-soaked in a jar of the good stuff and combat fine lines, oily skin, and feelings of friendly rivalry. In need of an afternoon beauty pick-me-up?
