  • Meadham Kirchhoff for Topshop: An 18-piece sneak peek at the kaleidoscopic collaboration

    Topshop Meadham Kirchhoff Collection 2013

Off-kilter British design duo Meadham Kirchhoff will launch its fourth collaboration with Topshop on November 21, and as to be expected, it’s zanier than ever. Inspired by a fictitious girl group dubbed The Cherrys, designers Edward Meadham and Benjamin Kirchhoff have dreamt up 80 pieces based on imagined-aesthetics of the four band members.

The first peek at this edition of Meadham Kirchhoff for Topshop reveals a psychedelic explosion of colour printed dresses, fur vests and accessories, a retro-style apron and more. And talk about those shoes! Unconventional would be putting it mildly, as stars and ruby red glitter are paired with seventies-inspired go-go boot stacked heels. To boot (no pun intended), a pair of lips an eyes appear on a particularly madcap pair.

  • Isabel Marant for H&M: Our interview with the hit maker behind this season’s most coveted collab

    Isabel Marant for H&M Interview

There’s a certain mystery involved in the making of a hit, a kind of magic that’s as unpredictable and inexplicable as it is intangible. In music, it’s known as the sweet spot. Nile Rodgers (the legendary music producer behind such earworms as David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance,” Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” and Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky”) summed it up thusly: “It just has to be cool. I can’t explain it but I know it when I arrive there.” If the same can be said of a fashion It item, then the Nile Rodgers of designers would be Isabel Marant. The reigning queen of effortless chic, the French fashion designer has je-ne-sais-quoi’d her way to the top of the fashion charts with such stylish hits as her slouchy football tee, Navajo print jeans and ubiquitous wedge sneaker, which has spawned more knockoffs than Madonna has copycats. One might be tempted to chalk Marant’s runaway success up to her inspired formula of boho meets rock ’n’ roll meets Parisian insouciance, but there’s something else x-factor-y at play here. “I have an innate feel for what people like,” Marant says. “I cannot put it into words and am constantly surprised by it, but the pieces I really like are usually those that sell best.” Whether you call it a sweet spot, instinct or just plain genius, Marant is bringing her magic touch to the masses in a new collaboration with H&M, launching Nov. 14, that brims with flirty boho frocks, zippered leather pants and a fresh take on her famous fringe-y pirate boots. Consider it a wallet-friendly compilation of her greatest hits.

  • Proenza Schouler for M.A.C is coming and this makeup collection is going to be major

It terms of “collaborations we’ve been dreaming of” M.A.C Cosmetics’ just-announced partnership with Proenza Schouler certainly sits at the top of the list. While little information is available—and the launch date is a whole season away—the cool-girl campaign imagery is enough to get our imaginations running.

But let’s talk details before we start speculating. Proenza Schouler has had a longstanding backstage beauty partnership with the brand, with makeup artist Diane Kendal keying many of their all-natural looks. “Beauty has always played a huge role in what we do on the runway and M.A.C has been one of our biggest supporters,” said Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez via press release. “We wanted to create something that the Proenza Schouler woman could relate to off the runway, and the M.A.C brand is so deeply rooted in fashion that we knew they would understand our vision.”

Just because we’re still salivating over the Isabel Marant for H&M womenswear collection doesn’t mean we can’t pause for a second (maybe just one) to talk about her equally amazing collections for men and kids.

Her first collection for men! With prices ranging from $30 to $350, men can look forward to chic tailored coats, heavily printed sweaters and biker styled leather pants that will definitely add European meets Americana flair to the wardrobe. Don’t mind us if we decide to make our way over to the men’s section to grab a few oversized sweaters for ourselves.

With kids in the front row becoming a fashion week trend in and of itself, it comes as no surprise to see that the kid’s collection would be just as lust worthy. Continuing the same spirited aesthetics for half the price, the younger and playful edit of the adult collection makes us quite nostalgic for those younger days.

We should start looking at frequent H&M’s designer collaboration leaks as kismet. Fashion freaks just can’t wait to get their dirty little hands on the latest greatest and cheapest thing, and we can we blame them? Nope, cause they are us. Last night, the lookbook for Isabel Marant’s upcoming collection for the Swedish retailer was prematurely revealed to the delight of everyone. Modeled by It girls like Milla Jovovitch, Lou Doillon, Alek Wek and Constance Jablonski, the Isabel Marant for H&M collection looks very much in line with Marant’s signature coveted style, meaning that her Navajo meets model off duty meets rock chick items can be yours for as low as $25. Haller! On the pricier end, an ethnic beaded cardigan tops out at $400, but with most of the 53 pieces pieces ranging between $50 and $200, we’d venture that there’s plenty for those with modest budgets. As for the highlights, we’ve got our eyes on the oxblood cropped leather and zipper embellished pants ($150), the oversized grey wool boyfriend coat ($200) and the slouched vintage-y leather fringe boots ($300). Marant’s first collection for men also debuts with this collection, translating similarly with fuzzy knit sweaters, Navajo prints and dusted workman boots.

The Isabel Marant for H&M collection launches worldwide on November 14, 2013. You may as well get in line now.

  • Target’s next designer collab has been announced: Peter Pilotto is coming (and it’ll be online, too!)

Hot on the heels of 3.1 Phillip Lim’s collection for Target (battle scars from yesterday, anyone?) Peter Pilotto has just been announced as the next designer collaboration for the superstore. The partnership was made public earlier today at the Peter Pilotto Spring 2014 runway show in London. Given how brilliant that collection was, we cannot wait to see what digital prints and bold colours will be coming to Target in February.

According to an interview with British Vogue, Pilotto’s decision to work with Target was motivated by the retailer’s mass popularity: “By working with Target, we’re able to broaden our reach and bring our design aesthetic to an entirely new audience.” Co-creative director Christophe De Vos continued, “Our collection for Target embodies the elegance and spirit of our own line, but makes it accessible to everyone.”

  • Rick Owens is designing shoes for Adidas so he has something stylish to work out in

    Rick Owens Adidas
    Photography by Peter Stigter

Earlier this year, Paris based designer Rick Owens decided to take up running, only to realize he didn’t have cool enough footwear to complement his cardio ambitions. “What shoes am I going to wear running?’ I can’t wear my big chunky basketball shoes — I’d look like a dinosaur running through the Tuileries.” Quelle horreur! His design instincts told him to take matters into his own hands. A quick call to Adidas was made and voila: Rick Owens for Adidas.

Announced yesterday on WWD, the new sneaker line will include six styles for men and four for women. There will be leather, suede and other Rick Owens signatures including a colour palette of black, grey and maybe a teeny splash of colour.

  • From Rihanna to Daft Punk: How musicians are keeping fashion collaborations interesting

    Musicans Fashion Collaborations

When it comes to collaborations, it seems like we’ve seen it all. The over-saturation of these fast fashion moments hardly allows us enough time to digest one limited-edition collection before our attention is pushed towards another. We’d say we were over the thrill, but that would probably be a lie. Especially with the refreshingly new kind of collaboration starting to emerge: that of the designer/musician collab. Though the musician half of the partnership rarely has experience in the fashion industry, there is something incredibly exciting about these strategic alliances. When the worlds of fashion and music collide, as we’ve seen happen with Beyonce’s latest collection for H&M, the media buzz is unbeatable. Designers and musicians tend to identify each other’s creative values, so why not work together?

Fashion favourite Hedi Slimane of Saint Laurent Paris has traded in models for musicians with the Saint Laurent Music Project, a portrait series inspired by the relationship between music and classic YSL. French duo Daft Punk, who mixed Slimane’s spring womenswear runway soundtrack, is the latest addition to the series. The designer also shot the dapper set’s June 2013 cover for Dazed & Confused. Slimane reaffirmed his ability to mold contemporary music through his recent collaboration with Canadian mixstress of the moment, Claire Boucher aka. Grimes. The two recently produced a collection of illustrated men’s T-shirts, influence by vintage YSL love posters. Grimes, who doubles as a talented illustrator, inked the five T-shirt designs herself (they’re currently available on ssense.com).
