Golden Globes 2013: 23 of the red carpet’s biggest, baddest and most beautiful dresses
See our photos from the Golden Globes 2013 red carpet »
Last night’s 70th annual Golden Globe Awards was a pretty epic lesson in red carpet trends. From the bright colours to the mermaid tails to the boob shows, the A-list all seemed to have consulted with each other’s stylists before arriving at the event. Red rose to the top of the colour charts, making bright appearances on Golden Globe winner Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture, Zooey Deschanel in Oscar de la Renta and Claire Danes in Versace. Richer shades were worn by Naomi Watts in Zac Posen, Taylor Swift in Donna Karan Atelier and Lena Dunham in Zac Posen (the verdict’s still out on Dunham’s dress, though we really don’t like to speak negatively about such a precious human).
Pastels also seemed a strong message on the red carpet, with every hue in the candy coated rainbow being tested against the natural beauty of the night’s various stars. Jessica Alba‘s signature bronzed glow was offset by her creamsicle orange Oscar de la Renta trumpet gown. Meanwhile, Golden Globe winner Jessica Chastain chose the most ideal aquamarine on the colour wheel for her Calvin Klein gown. Bravo!
On the flip side, stark black and white (and even a combo of both with Julianne Moore’s graphic black and white Tom Ford column dress) predictably showed up en masse on stars like Anne Hathaway in beaded white Chanel, Amanda Seyfried in stunning white Givenchy and Kate Hudson and Nicole Kidman, who were both clear standouts in statement-making black Alexander McQueen dresses.
And the mermaid tails, oh those mermaid tails. Thought they were retired? Think again. The ole pyramid hem is proving to be on a clear comeback, as worn by Amy Adams, Jennifer Lopez, Taylor Swift and Jessica Alba.
As for the aforementioned boob-show, one flip through out Golden Globe red carpet gallery would show quite the bountiful selection. And really, is there much wrong with that?

Paint your nails like Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna and Jessa: Deborah Lippmann is doing a Girls nail polish collection
Our obsession with HBO’s hit series Girls knows no bounds. And now we can further show our support-slash-solidarity for the four twenty-something characters thanks to a nail polish collaboration with Deborah Lippmann.
A four-colour, limited edition Deborah Lippmann Girls nail polish set was just announced and will launch in January 2013. Representative of the four Girls girls, the set includes a colour named for each: there’s “Hannah” (described as a “hapless hunter green”), “Marnie” (a “prim and proper pink”), “Shoshanna” (a “virtuous vivid violet”) and “Jessa” (a “bohemian burgundy”).

What’s in your bag, Allison Williams?
Photography by Stephanie J. Algieri Go inside Allison Williams’ bag! »
Girls is back. Girls is back! One of our most intense cultural obsessions returns with its Season 2 premiere on January 13, 2013 at 9pm on HBO Canada, and what better way to celebrate than with a look inside the beautiful bag of one of its beautiful stars, Allison Williams.
Our former cover girl was in Toronto last week to promote the new episodes as well as the release of season one on DVD and Blu-Ray (Its accompanying book of Lena Dunham’s tweets is epic, FYI) and graciously dumped the contents of her Jason Wu Daphne shoulder bag. While her stuff was being photographed, I super-fan quizzed her on the return of Booth Johnathan as well as what the next season looks like for character Marnie Michaels, who seemed to be floundering sans-boyfriend and roommate at the end of season one. “She’s having a rough go. She’s without the same comforts that she had in season one, so she’s very influx, and that is something that I know that I, and a lot of my friends can relate to,” she said. “When it rains, it really does seem to pour especially when you’re in your mid-twenties when you don’t have a lot of foundation already laid down it can just throw everything into upheaval at once—job, everything.”

Girls is back! Is it possible that Season Two might look better than the first?
There has been a gaping hole in our hearts since season one of Girls ended. Today, there has been a small repair to that hole with the trailer for Season Two, which premieres on January 13, 2013. If it’s even possible, the trailer hints that the second season may be funnier, wittier, and more entertaining […]

It girl must-reads! Both Lena Dunham and Alexa Chung are writing books
It’s a good week for fashionable female icons. Just a mere day after it was announced that Lena Dunham is writing a book, it has been revealed that Alexa Chung is planning on doing the same thing.
While both books will offer advice and personal anecdotes, the comparisons end there. According to British Vogue, Alexa Chung’s “will allow fans to step inside her world, as she reveals how she decides what to wear, her fashion influences and style tips.” Due out in September 2013, the book will feature Chung’s writing, as well as personal photographs, drawings and sketches—some of which can already be seen if you follow her on Twitter. (Fingers are crossed for an entire chapter on quirky nail art inspiration!)
While Alexa Chung has secured a publisher, Lena Dunham’s search for one is part of the publicity for her forthcoming book.

Lena Dunham and Zooey Deschanel are no longer nail art BFFs (But Zooey’s Emmys manicure is still adorable!)
Photography by Getty Images and tombachik/Instagram and zooeydeschanel/Instagram Despite Lena Dunham and Zooey Deschanel talking and tweeting about coordinating their nail art for the 2012 Emmys, it seems the two didn’t actually follow through with their matching manicure plans. Even though Lena Dunham kept her Emmy awards nails simple, she did stay on trend with her colour choice, opting for Deborah Lippmann’s natual-looking “Fashion” nail polish. The taupe shade complemented her Prada gown and kept the focus on her makeup. And we have to say: Lena Dunham does a dramatic blue smoky eye well. (It’s very Chanel Couture Spring 2012, no?)
Zooey Deschanel did, however, show up on the red carpet with an impressive sparkly nail art design, complete with glittering mini TVs on her thumbs and Swarovski crystals overtop a pale orange polish across all other fingers.

Emmys 2012 Best Dressed: See our top 24 red carpet picks and vote for your favourite
See our Emmys 2012 Best Dressed picks »
There was a surprise winner on the red carpet at last night’s Emmys awards show and it happened to be the colour yellow. It’s safe to say many of the stars had a sunny outlook for the night.
Julianne Moore, Claire Danes, and Kaley Cuoco all sported dresses in egg yolk yellow. Moore opted for pieces from Raf Simmons’ first couture collection for Christian Dior, Danes wore Lanvin which flattered her pregnant belly, and Cuoco wore Angel Sanchez.
Our favourite funny girls, Kristen Wiig, Amy Poehler, and Tina Fey, kept their looks simple and classic. Dressed in a cream Balenciaga, black sequined Stella McCartney, and burgundy Vivienne Westwood, respectively, these comedians looked anything but silly.
There were some could-be-prom-queen moments from Zooey Deschanel and January Jones, whose trains were as long as they were wide. Deschanel had a cutesy manicure (of course) to go with her Reem Acra fluffy gown that featured a tiny TV on her nail. Turns out wearing tulle on the red carpet is harder than it seems because Zooey Deschanel got her gown caught on Lucy Liu’s metallic Versace dress. Oh, the agony!
Despite Zooey Deschanel and January Jones’ large looks, many women opted for body hugging dresses. Sofia Vergara resembled a sparkling mermaid in Zuhair Murad which featured a between the boobs cut-out and Hayden Panettiere was feeling blue in her bollywood inspired Marchesa gown. Michelle Dockery also hopped aboard the blue train in a Louis Vuitton satin dress and Nicole Kidman joined as well with a teal embellishment.

Girls Recap: Marnie gets pathetic in a cubbie, Jessa man-eats while Shoshanna watches and Hannah proves that she is really unfit for any and all paying jobs
Last week’s episode ended with a well-executed vengeance song that made us wish our friends’ boyfriends were in bands so we could get them to sing pages of our diaries. There was also a former camp counselor that refused to do a kitchen raid on Shoshanna’s virginity and Jessa lost her charges but gained some Jeff sympathy. This week delightfully picked back up at Marnie and Hannah’s apartment and showed us the further destruction created by the latter’s diary. It also gave us a glimpse into Charlie’s apartment that is as neat and organized and boring as we imagine the inside of his head to be. But most importantly, we had a sexual harassment stand-off between Hannah and her boss that we’re sure she wanted to sound like Disclosure but came out more Nine to Five.

Girls Recap: Virginity! Cheating! STDs! A gay ex boyfriend! We discuss the sex problems brought on by episode 3
How are you feeling about the girls of Girls right now? Do you like them, or are you siding with critics who can’t keep from pointing out the show’s flaws? Have you resigned yourself to not liking the characters and just getting through this whole thing with them in a vote of female solidarity? (“If we don’t watch, the Two and a Half Mens of this world win!”) Or, maybe like me, you like them simply because they’re not trying too hard to be liked (unlike Marnie around a hot artist)?
Last week, we saw how our foursome each reacted to an abortion in their midst, experienced two distinctly awful rounds of sex, discovered there was a virgin in the pack, and saw how easily an unwanted pregnancy could disappear. This week there was no sex but lots of body image talk. From Adam playing with Hannah’s belly fat to Shoshanna telling Jessa it wasn’t a good thing that she could see her belly—it wasn’t exactly Our Bodies, Ourselves but there was masturbation and STDs. The narcissistic tunnel these ladies have us trapped in was given a light by the introduction of a few outside characters: Marnie’s tit-tape-dependant gallery director, Hannah’s now-gay ex and the NYC-version of a nuclear family Jessa is babysitting for. (Aside: was the name of the neighbour in the kid’s novel called Shamaia Grimes, like the kid did not know how to spell Shenae Grimes’s name properly? Yes/No/Maybe?)
While we loved seeing the girls run like pack animals in the last episode, it was interesting to see how they operate away from one another this ep. Marnie seems like the grown-up of her group, but in the so-called art world she’s low on the social order and just as capable of being intimidated by a guy she wants to like her. But let’s get back to the body talk.

Girls Recap: We discuss the quirk (and irk)-filled pilot of HBO’s most buzzed-about show
Welcome to our weekly recap of Girls, the new show from HBO that media are touting as Sex and the City for Millennials. It’s likely journalists just like to compare things that share numbers, like New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys had five guys singing to teenage girls, because while Sex and the City and Girls both take a concerted look at the lives of four women living in New York City, that is where the similarities awkwardly pause. Girls is mostly concerned with Hannah, who is 24, works in publishing and lives in Greenpoint, Brooklyn like a current-day Emily Gould. Hannah lives with her gallerist bestie Marnie. There’s also their friend Jessa, who has just arrived back in the city from some kind of spiritual quest/pearl shucking/bazaar shopping expedition and is living with her earnest, velour-tracksuit-wearing cousin Shoshanna.
Like any girl in her early twenties, post-college or no, these ladies have problems of the guy/work/family/friend variety, so let’s see how they go about solving them, or more likely, making them worse. Each week we’ll take a look at the two main problems affecting the Girls and how they go about trying to find a solution. Ten years older than the Girls, and having lived through her fair share of humiliations, your recapper will also weigh in on whether these problems are just rest stops on the road to better character or psyche damaging pile-ups that will follow them the rest of their days.
