Afternoon beauty fix: Return from a sick day looking healthier than ever with these tricks
I’m ready to go back into public after having the worst cold ever. What can I do to brighten my appearance?
Chapped lips, raw skin, tired eyes… blech, we know it all too well. Have you ever heard the adage, “starve a cold, feed a flu”? The same rule applies to the beauty fix for a common cold. When you’ve got blocked sinuses and have been breathing through your mouth for what seems like weeks on end, your lips fall prey to loathsome dryness and cracking. -
Afternoon beauty fix: Some après-ski options for chapped lips
My lips got extremely chapped during a ski trip two weeks ago and they still haven’t healed. Help!
Don’t blame it on the shussing, ski bunny—winter weather makes it hard to keep your lips healthy! Whether you’re on the mountain or spending winter curled up in the city, the degree of moisture in the air has plummeted with the temperature, taking with it the water that’s otherwise retained in your skin. Because your lips don’t have oil glands to produce and maintain moisture on their own, you’ll need to add it back for them. -
FASHION plates: Rainbow Brite
Forget somewhere over the rainbow, we’ve brought a bunch of fun-coloured finds right to your fingertips. Inspired by Christopher Kane’s neon Resort 2012 collection, we’ve put together a set of rainbow-themed goodies that are almost as good as a pot of gold. Take from our fashionable gradient to (literally) highlight your wardrobe.

Beauty most wanted: Super Lustrous Lip Balm
For the germ-paranoid, applying lip balm straight from the pot with your fingers is the beauty equivalent of a veggie tray victimized by a roomful of double-dippers. Revlon Super Lustrous Lip Balm ($10, at drugstores) comes with a removable applicator brush, while its fruity scent takes us back to our childhood Bonne Bell collection.

Beauty most wanted: Edible arrangement
If it’s true that women consume at least four pounds of lipstick in their lifetime, let’s make the most of that nauseating stat. Bite Beauty lip products (from $21, at Sephora) are laced with the antioxidant resveratrol—a Dr. Oz fave found in red wine—and boast food-grade ingredients, like the bits of pomegranate in this multi- purpose balm.

Winter Skin Savers
By Rebecca Perrin
As soon as the holidays are gone and so is our fond affection for the fluffy white stuff. Cracked cuticles, bumpy-red thighs and phyllo pastry cheeks persuade us to fight winter’s ravage with these creamy defense mechanisms.FACE
Gentle cleansing and soothing treatments are critical for allowing it to keep calm and carry on through to spring. Before bed is a good time to give your face a deluge of hydrating nourishment. The almond and calendula oils in NIVEA Rich Regenerating Night Care Cream ($8 at mass beauty retailers across Canada) will drown the dry.
For wearing beneath your makeup, Sephora Instant Moisturizer ($24 at Sephora) is oil-free, paraben free, and a trustworthy go-to when you need a protective fortress for your face.

The daily steal: Natural lip balm, $5
Fruits & Passion (fruits-passion.com) is one of those brands that caters to those who like a helping of botanicals with their beauty. While they’ve never made claims of being “green,” they’re starting to flirt with the category with the launch of these 100% natural lip balms ($5 each). Free of petroleum-derived additives, the three varieties […]

Want a little dessert with your lip balm?
Not to toot my own horn, but I consider myself a bona fide lip balm expert. My collection inhabits an entire drawer and I take the selection process for a new balm pretty seriously. I can usually tell by the packaging alone whether the product will be waxy, glossy or so globby it won’t spread more than a centimetre on my lip before having to go for a second dip. My lastest lip balm trial was with Cake Kiss Lip Butter trio ($24, cakebeauty.com). I began my standard procedure with the first step: the olfactory test.

The daily steal: Lip balm, $4
Polysporin Lip Therapy ($4, well.ca) This lip balm is my lip saver. No, it’s not brand new to the market, but it is the only thing that keeps me flaky–and chap-free–while ping-ponging between freezing outside and roasting indoors. Seriously, slap it on and tell me I’m wrong. I dare you.
