What’s in your bag, Tamara Mellon?
What’s in your bag, Tamara Mellon? »
In just over 10 years, Tamara Mellon has established herself as a titan of the fashion world. The former accessories editor turned CEO of Jimmy Choo built the label from the ground up, making it one of the most recognized names in luxury footwear and accessories (and worth upwards of $100 million to boot). After leaving the company in 2012 and penning an ultra-revealing autobiography In My Shoes, Mellon went back to the drawing board, launching a namesake label of her own last fall. Consisting of slick and sexy ready-to-wear, shoes and accessories for the ball-buster inside all of us, the label was an instant sell-out when it launched on Net-A-Porter. This season, the label launches at Holt Renfrew, which the 46-year-old OBE toasted last week in Toronto. While in town, we took a peek inside one of her new bags for a reveal of what a champion accessories designer carries along for a 24-hour jaunt.

Beauty Fix: Why you should consider using peels, how to make curly lashes last longer and more

My eyeshadow seems to be fading fast in this humidity, but long-wearing formulas dry out my lids. How can I get my usual shadow to stay put longer?
As the mercury continues to rise and we creep towards impossible temperatures, we have to do whatever possible to make sure our face doesn’t slide off after mere minutes outside. While long-wear formulas can be extremely effective in staying put, they do dry out and dehydrating the skin in effort to reduce oil on the surface that causes makeup to shift. Instead, try smoothing on a thin layer of eyeshadow primer, such as Nars Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base ($24, narscosmetics.ca) prior to applying any eye makeup. This eye primer, which is enriched with an antioxidant rice extract, uses a polymer and mineral powder blend to ensure that your eye makeup (cream, liquid, powder, pencil) is anchored effectively for hours on end, even if you’re breaking a sweat. -

What kind of mascara formula leads to more volume? I’m not in love with my current tube and am looking for a replacement.
As we’ve discussed before, finding the right mascara is a personal thing that involves many factors, such as your own lashes, mascara formula, mascara brush, application and the effect you’re looking to achieve. Generally, you’ll find that mascaras that aim to lengthen lashes have a wetter formula, while more voluminizing formulas are drier in consistency. A just-launched mascara with a drier consistency formula (which also means it will set faster and be less resistant to smudges) is Cover Girl Flamed Out Mascara ($10, at drugstores). The hollow bristles of this hourglass-shaped brush pick up way more product, meaning you’ll get healthy coverage with every stroke. The dryer formula also makes layering ideal—you can keep “pumping up” each lash with product until you have the desired amount of volume. The end result will certainly be impressive enough to keep this tube in your rotation! -

I have stretch marks that I’m really self-conscious about, particularly in the summer. Can I do anything to hide them?
You’re hardly alone in feeling painfully aware of stretch marks on your body! Stretch marks are the result of the rapid stretching of the dermis. Men and women alike can develop stretch marks, often from puberty or weight gain. Approximately 50-90 per cent of women develop stretch marks during pregnancy, which makes stretch marks a fairly common concern that ought to be addressed! Try a topical treatment such as Stratamark ($40, Shoppers Drug Mart). This gel forms a thin but essential occlusive barrier on the skin to create an optimized environment to normalize and hydrate the collagen synthesis process, which will lead to repaired skin. The gel is non-sticky, dries quickly and is transparent, so it can be applied any time. Reduced appearance of stretch marks is apparent in as little as a month, which is all the more reason to grab a tube and start applying now! -
Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson: The talented mother-daughter duo share tips on growing up, wearing makeup and more
Go behind the scenes with Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson and Almay »
In terms of famous mother-daughter duos, is there a pair more precious than Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson? They both have sparkling smiles, contagious laughs and a knack for starring in films that become instant classics. (We’re not the only ones who could watch Death Becomes Her and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days on repeat, right?) As for their relationship, red carpet snaps and paparazzi shots alike would lead you to believe that they’re an IRL Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. Well, after speaking to the pair on the phone earlier this month, I can indeed confirm: Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson finish each other’s sentences, make each other laugh and have a genuine mother-daughter rapport that makes you wish they’d adopt you. All of this is to say, it’s no wonder that Almay selected them as brand ambassadors for Mother’s Day. (Psst, it’s Sunday, May 12!) Kate’s been working with Almay since 2010, but this is Goldie’s first involvement with the brand, so I asked the duo about their thoughts on makeup, growing up and more.

Quotable: Thanks to practicing on her brother’s face while growing up, this A-list star is quite handy with the makeup brush
Considering her gig as an Almay spokesperson and her Hollywood pedigree, it’s not all that surprising that Kate Hudson knows a thing or two about makeup. The star even told People recently that she does both her and her friends’ makeup for premieres: “If I’m bringing them to a premiere . . . they’ll all […]

Runway to Real Life: How to wear Miu Miu’s red eyeshadow
Find out how to get the look! »
At Miu Miu’s Spring 2012 show, the models’ faces were left mostly bare, save for a brazen swipe of red across each eye. Bright and severe, the look was a striking accompaniment to the collection’s fairly neutral palette. If you’re bold enough to try it, red is fabulous! So rather than tone down the colour to something more muted, I decided to use a bright, primary red, but soften it by adding both deeper and lighter colours around the edges.

Hyper-pigmented golds, subtle silvers, dusty coppers—the list goes on and on. Metallics certainly have a range that ensures they appear on beauty trend reports season after season. In the last few weeks for instance, Fall 2012 runways have revealed a preference for rich jewel tones and duo-chromatic shades. But before we jump ahead, now’s the time to get glitzed up in spring’s favourite metallic: bronze.

Fashion news: Kate Hudson is Almay’s new face, Japanese PM makes sartorial faux pas, Juicy Couture to open in Canada
Just announced, rom-com queen Kate Hudson will be the new face of Almay. Her role with the fancy title of “global brand ambassador,” will include involvement with charity events and ad campaigns, which hit print and TV later this year.
Marc Jacobs reportedly wore a kilt to jury duty. His beau Lorenzo Martone hates kilts. Trouble in paradise? Probably not. [Gawker]
