It’s all about the burgundy manicure for fall. Plus: How to do Ruffian’s red and gold foil nails!
See our behind-the-scenes gallery from Ruffian »
Learn how to do the gold foil mani! »In the final days of Toronto Fashion Week, one thing was starting to become very apparent: deep red nails are going to be huge for fall. Chloé Comme Parris and Pink Tartan both used the same maroon Essie shade—“Wicked”—and similar colours had been popping up at international shows all season, including Ferragamo, Jenny Packham and Bill Blass. Rachel Roy leaned towards an aubergine-tinted red, while Yigal Azrouel dubbed his shade of choice “pinot noir.” At L.A.M.B., burgundy polish covered just the moon, leaving the rest of the nail bare. And where red appears, gold seems to follow: the Toronto shows for Jeremy Laing and Ruffian paired both colours on the same nail, whereas Marchesa alternated all-burgundy (Deborah Lippmann’s “Single Ladies”) and all-gold manicures down the runway.

Inside Calgary’s T’was the Night shopping extravaganza: Chantal Kreviazuk, Lainey Gossip, and partygoers in ballgowns (at the mall)
T’was the Night we dressed in our finest holiday attire for a fully-fledged mall party to celebrate the multimillion dollar TD Square/Holt Renfrew renovations at Calgary’s CORE Shopping Centre. The CORE lit up indoor fireworks and a 45-foot tree, sprinkled fluffy fake snow from the balconies, and a threw a mini concert with Canadian songstress Chantal Kreviazuk, all on top of some lofty holiday sales and prizes.
Greeting guests on the red carpet was the queen of smut, Elaine Lui of Lainey Gossip and eTalk, who posed for fan photos in a form-fitting, blue and white Yigal Azrouël number. The belle of the mall-ball, however, was Kreviazuk, who got pampered at Eveline Charles before taking the stage in a whimsical, feathered Paul Hardy gown, and later, at the VIP lounge, where she signed autographs and posed for photos with Mr. Hardy himself.

Q&A: Yigal Azrouël wants you to wear shorts with your jacket
Yigal Azrouël has been a darling of the fashion scene since he launched his womenswear line in 1998. (He branched out into menswear for Fall 2007.) Caitlan Moneta sat down with the Israeli–born, New York–based designer at Toronto’s George C. (21 Hazelton Ave., 416-962-1991), which carries both his lines, to talk men in shorts, artistic collaborations and soapy scents.
You started in womenswear before branching out into men’s. What prompted the move?
“For me, you know, it was kind of a natural evolution. Because I started, like I design for myself, like I do it, I create my own closet. I’m making my own collection for myself so I think what am I going to wear.”You showed all kinds of shorts for summer for men. What are some of your rules for dressing in shorts?
“You know, it’s summer time. Who said that jackets or suits have to be worn with the pants. You can wear it with a short with cool shoes or sandals. Definitely it’s a modern way of approaching menswear, you know. You can take a risk. -
