Chanel continues to prove that its vision of air travel remains much better than our reality, with a limited edition makeup collection inspired by their Spring 2012 Couture show. Based on shades of blue from a “cloud-strewn sky,” the nine-piece collection includes a full spectrum of inky to iridescent shades, in eyeshadows, liners and—our favourite—a nail polish. The pale, pearly blue Le Vernis is called “Sky Line” and made its debut on Chanel’s airplane aisle runway back in January. The complete Blue Illusion de Chanel collection is available July 23 at select counters in Canada: Holt Renfrew and the Chanel boutique on Toronto’s Bloor Street, and at Holt Renfrew in Vancouver.

When creating his Spring 2012 collection, Jonathan Saunders had an unlikely muse: chemically sedated Miami housewives from the ’50s. His models, clad in full skirts of Floridian pastels, sauntered down the runway with bronzed skin and flesh-toned lips. It was makeup artist Lucia Pieroni’s bold use of an oversized cat eye, however, that had beauty editors swooning.

By starting with a sunny glow, bringing some drama to the eyes, and slicking on a creamy nude lipstick, you can channel Saunders’ South Beach chic with just five products!

Rumour has it that when makeup artist Pat McGrath set out to create her “living doll” look for Louis Vuitton’s Spring 2012 show, she and her team pulled an all-nighter (at the Ritz, of course!) to glue together 10 sets of false lashes for each model. When the show opened with models perched on a revolving carousel in candy-coloured frocks, their flawless makeup and dense, fluttery lashes momentarily created the illusion that mannequins were instead the stars.

“Young, eccentric and rich” were the words makeup artist Pat McGrath used to describe the beauty look she dreamed up for Yves Saint Laurent’s Spring 2012 show. McGrath painted models’ eyelids metallic brown, their lips metallic red and bleached away their brows. The look was confident and glamorous, if not a little bit severe.

I created a softer version of this dramatic look for real life with a few small tweaks and just four products. By opting for a wash of colour on the eyes instead of opaque brown, and by highlighting your brows with tinted gel instead of bleaching them off, you’ll be super glam without looking harsh. Gearing up for fashion week is always a sport in itself, but this season designers and backstage beauty pros went for a literal interpretation. Marni’s Spring 2012 collection was suspended between girlish youth and confident womanhood. Although the ‘60s chic looks were structured and clean, little hints of whimsy appeared throughout. It was the collection’s playful accessories—two-toned oxfords and clutches—that inspired makeup artist Tom Pecheux to create the orange and white beauty look. By using shadows instead of liners, and by perking up the cheeks and lips with sheer products, you can make this work for real life. The bright, light colours are what make this look youthful and fun, so don’t be shy about using these creamsicle hues.

Smart Italian women—scientists and mathematicians, to be exact—were Fendi’s Spring 2012 muses. Models appeared with bouffant, slightly disheveled faux bobs meant to remind us of eccentric scientists. (Einstein, hello!) Their eyes were slightly obscured by frameless shades resembling lab glasses. Behind the shades, the models’ eyes were gilded with gold or silver leaf, which makeup artist Peter Phillips had applied generously to create a raw texture while echoing the shape of the glasses.

Considering how long it’s been popular, can black nail polish now be considered classic? Lauren Conrad brought it to the masses on many an episode of The Hills, it’s a common colour for starlets to wear on the red carpet, and almost every polish brand has one—or more!—black shades. While a dark manicure still stands out, a graphic design can give it even more power. This week, inspiration came from Chloé‘s Spring 2012 collection. I mixed stripes of black and white polish to create a slim design and left a sliver bare in the middle—just like the deep V-neck of the Chloé button-down.

Inspired by Spain’s rich cultural traditions and mythologies, Moschino’s Spring 2012 collection definitely brought the drama. Models sashayed with toreador swagger, wearing ruffled dresses, jingling gold bells and even donning bullfighter hats. Makeup artist Tom Pecheux dreamed up a look that was a tribute to Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, anchored by a strong brow, dramatic smoky eyes and contoured cheeks. The smudginess of the eyes had a painterly quality that was a perfect accompaniment to the vivid collection.

Since the classic black smoky eye is essentially the makeup equivalent of a little black dress, this is a great and wearable look for any special event. We’ll share some tips and tricks for creating a Moschino-worthy version that will stay put all night long.
