Ever wanted to go through a celeb’s makeup bag? We spoke to Lights about her signature look, beauty routine & more
“I don’t do anything the way it’s supposed to be done.” I’ve barely sat down before Lights warns me that her approach to makeup is just a whole lot of trial and error, plus a sprinkling of YOLO. What are the benefits of opting for body oil instead of a lotion or cream?
Even if you lotion up immediately after showering, it’s often trumped as soon as you go outside by the bitter wind and cold, leaving you with skin that feels uncomfortably tight. Fresh Life Body Oil ($56, sephora.ca) works below the surface, hydrating skin deeply all thanks to its blend of nourishing oils, including sweet almond, jojoba seed, apricot kernel, sunflower seed and evening primrose oil. These oils work together to soothe, protect, renew and moisturize your skin while improving elasticity. Body oils also absorb best when applied to slightly damp skin, making it the perfect complement to your straight-out-of-the-shower beauty routine. The bonus to this body oil is definitely the fragrance, which has notes of bergamot, grapefruit, silk amber, vanilla grass and lilac leaves, making it warm yet fresh, lingering through the day. -

Is it actually possible to repair split ends without cutting my hair?
If you’re attached to every bit of your hair length, the desire to hold off from making a cut can be strong—even when split ends are everywhere. That being said, there isn’t a way to fully repair split ends. However, if you’re interested in minimizing the appearance of split ends between haircuts, that can certainly be achieved with the right products. Tresemmé Split Remedy Shampoo & Conditioner ($7 each, well.ca) contains positively charged polymers in a gel base that’s attracted to your negatively-charged split ends. This seals the split ends and provides a smoother appearance of each strand—while allowing you to wait out your next haircut with sleek, not scraggly, hair.

How to do Carly Rae Jepsen’s MMVA hair and makeup at home! (Did you notice she changed her lipstick colour 3 times?)
Sunday was certainly a big night for Carly Rae Jepsen—the Canadian pop singer won three of the four MMVA awards she was nominated for, performed on stage twice (opening the show with “Call Me Maybe” and later singing “Wild One” with Flo Rida) and did we mention she hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week? Needless to say, there’s no one who better deserved her multiple wardrobe and makeup changes throughout the show. To get to the bottom of the singer’s style, we spoke to Veronica Chu, who was Jepsen’s hairstylist and makeup artist at the award show.

Beauty trend: Flushed cheeks, glistening skin and hit-the-showers hair did laps on the Spring 2012 runways. We take a closer look at athletic-inspired beauty
Drenched hair and skin, cheeks flushed from exertion—with clear eyes and full hearts, Kari Molvar contends this season’s beauty can’t lose.
Gearing up for fashion week is always a sport in itself, but this season designers and backstage beauty pros went for a literal interpretation. With slicked-back hair and rosy cheeks flushed as if they’d just come in from a run, models strode athletically down the runways in mesh tracksuits, neoprene zip-ups and jerseys ticked with racing stripes. But even if you’re not in training mode, the look is just as chic. With that in mind, we asked the elite hair and makeup pros to give us a few pointers on pulling off the trend.
