Beauty Fix: Two tricks for saying goodbye to cellulite and more answers to your beauty questions
Every week our Beauty Fix columnist takes on your questions about makeup, skincare, hair and more. Have a beauty question we haven’t answered? Email us at beautyfix@fashionmagazine.com.
Are there any products out there that actually do get rid of cellulite? Or even the appearance of it?
This is a very common question that I’m certain many women want to know the answer to, especially this time of year. To put it simply, there is no technical way to get rid of cellulite. There are products and methods that can reduce the appearance of cellulite, but nothing will magically make cellulite disappear. I know, I know, that’s a lot of real talk to take in. That being said, working to reduce the appearance of cellulite is always worth a shot, right? Start in the shower by using Bliss FatGirlSlim Soap ($22, sephora.com), which is a nubby soap bar that contains caffeine, peppermint and grapefruit extracts to stimulate circulation and jojoba beads to exfoliate skin. Follow up with Clarins High Definition Body Lift ($68, sephora.com), a body treatment lotion that contains caffeine and patent-pending breakthrough ingredients Celosia Cristata Extract and Aquatic Mint Extract, which are plant extracts that target fatty tissue from developing cellulite in the first place. Ultimately, stimulation of the area is essential to tackling cellulite woes. -
Afternoon beauty fix: Don’t fear the keratin treatment!
I’ve heard both good and bad news about keratin treatments recently—should I try keratin to help my dry, frizzy hair or should I avoid it?
First off, it was the addition of formaldehyde in a few specific keratin treatments that can be blamed for the bad press, not the keratin itself. To get a little scientific, keratin is a naturally occurring protein found in hair, nails, and skin. It’s also key in the composition of healthy hair: each strand of hair is composed of three layers—the surface, the cuticle, and the core—and surrounded by a whole bunch of proteins, including keratin, which look like shingles on a roof. (We did say “a little” scientific!) -
Let’s get this straight: Our fashion director has a life-changing hair experience
During Milan Fashion Week, I promised you I would blog about a truly miraculous and life-changing experience–getting my hair straightened with Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy Sure, it’s not baby-saving or rocket science miraculous, but amazing nonetheless. You naturally straight-haired girls can snicker all you want, but curly haired girls know what I’m talking about: I now have hair that goes down, not up!
For the treatment, I headed up to Donato Salon + Spa (Yorkdale Shopping Centre, 3401 Dufferin St., 416-789-4332, and 4 other GTA locations, donato.ca), where senior colour technician Mary Listi been quietly smoothing frizz-balls like me with the Keratin Complex (from $375), for a while now. Once I caught wind of this, I eagerly signed up. (Actually, I made my daughter, Molly, go first, and the results were so staggering–her drying and straightening time has shrunk from an hour and a half to only 7 minutes–that I couldn’t wait to submit and transform.)
Read about the treatment, and see the results, after the jump.
