Backstage beauty sneak peek: 5 of the best new products used at the Fall 2014 shows
One of the best things about going backstage at New York fashion week is seeing what the top makeup artists and hairstylists are using in their kits. It’s often a sneak peek at products not yet on shelves, or uncommon tools they’ve found on their travels. Here, five of the best products we’ve spied backstage this week at the Fall 2013 shows:

Green glitter at Altuzarra, helmet hair at Alexander Wang: 9 beauty statements from the Fall 2014 shows
The eyes, hair and nails have been making most of the beauty statements so far on the Fall 2014 runways at New York Fashion Week. Here are our favourite looks and the top beauty trends so far:
Russet lipstick as eyeshadow at Helmut Lang
Helmut Lang’s textured, masculine collection was complemented with a simple, pared down face punctuated by a soft wash of lustrous burgundy on the eye. “It’s very minimal and clean but with a hint of punk,” said lead artist Hannah Murray, who painted Nars lipstick in “Deborah Audacious” (coming this fall) onto the eye and pressed “Heat” bronzing powder over it to set. She skipped eyeliner, mascara and brow colour, and kept the under-eye area clean to avoid a “pink-eye” effect. -
Best makeup brushes: Illamasqua, M.A.C and Make Up For Ever all have new and improved offerings for fall
New bristle technology and ergonomically designed brushes are changing the way we put on makeup. Time to toss those sponge-tip applicators.
There’s a plastic skull at the offices of British makeup brand Illamasqua. It’s neither paperweight nor homage to Alexander McQueen: It belongs to David Horne, the director of product development, who studies the model cranium when he’s designing makeup brushes to help him determine what shapes fit best with the bone structure of the face. “That’s where I start,” he says. “I think, ‘Where is this brush going to go?’” Most recently, Horne used the anatomy class teaching aid while developing the Blush Up Brush ($50, thebay.com), focusing on the spot “where the mandible connects with the zygomatic.” The result: densely packed bristles arranged in an oval shape that deposit and blend pigment better than the traditional lollipop silhouette, he says, because they fit in the natural groove below the cheekbone. “If you change the tools, you change the application by default.”

How to do the cool-girl makeup and faded pastel hair from Peter Som Spring 2013
Read all the backstage tips from Peter Som Spring 2013 »
More was more on Peter Som’s Spring 2013 runway when it came to beauty. Bright orange eyelids were mixed with washed out pastel hair extensions, resulting in the ultimate cool-girl vibe for spring.
The Peter Som beauty team—led by Wella Professionals global creative director Eugene Souleiman and makeup artist Tom Pecheux—matched the collection’s watercolour-print boardshorts and billowy floral dresses with bright pops of colour. However, the models’ natural skin tone played a key role in the look. “There is no blush, no highlighter—no need,” said Pecheux, noting that all the models were returning from summer vacation with flawless, toned skin. As our spring trends guide reported, skincare products play a major role when it comes to the “natural” skin look. Pecheux used hydrating gel, foundation and a translucent powder to ensure complexions looked fresh.

Paris Fashion Week Fall 2013 backstage beauty: A feminine face with “almost masculine” brows at Isabel Marant
See the full backstage beauty gallery from Isabel Marant Fall 2013 »
Makeup inspiration at Isabel Marant Fall 2013:
“I wanted to create a makeup look that was both feminist and boyish. The focus is on the brows, which are effortless but controlled—full, with volume, almost masculine. Makeup on the face is very light, very sheer, like a veil, while the lips are simple, natural and nude.” – Tom Pecheux, creative makeup director for Estée LauderGet the look:
– Models’ faces were prepped with a cocktail of anti-aging serums and creams, including Estée Lauder Revitalizing Supreme Global Anti-Aging Crème and Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex. These helped to smooth out the surface of the skin and added a much-needed dose of hydration. Skin was then kept fresh and clean with just a sheer layer of Estée Lauder foundation and concealer where needed. -
Milan Fashion Week Fall 2013 backstage beauty: 3 bold lip colours we love
We still have Paris to go, but it’s safe to say that so far, there has been a lot of pared down beauty this season. When makeup artists do drag the colour out, it seems a strong lip is in favour. As Milan Fashion Week Fall 2013 winds down, here are three of our favourite bold mouths from that city.

Watching the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show tonight? We have the backstage scoop on the Angels’ hair and makeup
See all the beauty looks from the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show! »
The sexiest show on earth, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, will be televised tonight and although many will be tuning in to see the elaborate costumes, fancy lingerie and performances from Rihanna and Justin Bieber, we can’t forget about the beauty. After all, while a million-dollar bra is hard to come by, anyone can try their hand at the hair and makeup done on the Victoria’s Secret Angels. Even better, we have the complete low-down on how to achieve both.
Makeup artist Tom Pecheux gave Victoria’s Secret models such as Miranda Kerr and Doutzen Kroes a look that featured sultry brown eyes, glossy, barely-tinted lips and earthy cheeks. And given just how much skin is on display, the Angels’ bodies were given a sun kissed glow with help from the brand’s Beach Sexy line of bronzers and self-tanners.
