Exclusive: Peter Philips on Dior Men’s FW 2021 Beauty Look + Collaborating With Artist Peter Doig
Earlier today, Dior showed its Men’s FW 2021 fashion show and we spoke to the luxury French fashion house’s creative and image director, Peter Philips, about this season’s beauty look. Following a quite dramatic neon eyeshadow moment at last year’s (Fall 2020) men’s show, dubbed “cyber-surfer” eye makeup, this season’s beauty look was decidedly more […]

Final fantasy: The hair and makeup artists behind spring’s boldest beauty looks
See the Spring 2014 beauty looks »
As bare-bones beauty dominates the runways, a few holdouts are making sure fantasy lives on.
It was a casual remark, meant to highlight the exceptional craftsmanship behind the Old Hollywood-inspired, ultra-glamorous sets he devised for the Armani Privé Fall 2013 Couture show. But hairstylist Orlando Pita’s words backstage in Paris last summer offered an astute commentary on the state of runway beauty as a whole: “Now that John Galliano and Alexander McQueen are gone from the business, a new guard has created a kind of couture that relates to the street,” he said. “It was always about fantasy; that’s gone for now.”
The role of the backstage beauty team is to complete the full translation from the designer’s mind; it helps refine the woman, or the character, who would wear the clothes. Certain designers stuck to their fantasy-driven existence for spring, with all the over-the-top beauty fanfare that goes with it (Gareth Pugh’s alien-inspired eyebrow discs; Thom Browne’s frizzy-haired, smudged-makeup insane asylum patients; Vivienne Westwood’s similarly unnerved walking dead iteration). However, if you take a look at some of the most anticipated shows of the past few seasons, the resonance of Pita’s statement becomes much louder. From Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang and The Row to Burberry Prorsum, Christopher Kane, Balmain and Isabel Marant, there has been an overwhelming reliance on minimal makeup and easy, undone hair that was most certainly not in the phrasebooks of Galliano or McQueen—or Thierry Mugler and Azzedine Alaïa, for that matter.

Quelle surprise! Dior gains Peter Philips, Chanel’s former makeup director
Beauty editors’ polished mouths dropped to the floor this morning with the announcement of Dior’s new creative and image director. The reason behind this beauty world startle? It’s Peter Philips, the former creative director for Chanel cosmetics. From 2008 to 2013, Philips was responsible for some of the French powerhouse’s major beauty product innovations, including launching now-iconic nail polish shades (Particulière, Jade and Mimosa, to name a few) as well as Rouge Coco Hydrating Crème Lip Colour. And how can we forget the beauty feats he pulled off for Chanel’s runway shows? For Spring 2009, he tattooed models with pearls, chains and blossoms. In Fall 2012 he made us all reconsider our eyebrows with the debut of custom Chanel bejeweled brows, and the following year we were ready to break out the glitter after he lined the models’ eyes with elegant sequins.

Paris Fashion Week Fall 2013 backstage beauty: Shimmering, glitter-covered eyes at Chanel
There was plenty to take in at the Chanel Fall 2013 show this morning at the Grand Palais, not to mention the giant globe centered in the middle of the runway. While everywhere you looked was an extravagant feast for the eye, our gaze was fixed upon the sequins adorning the models’ twinkling eyes.
Dramatic and artistic makeup is not new for Chanel (remember the leaf-like tulle appliqués on the eyes for the Spring 2013 Couture show?) and this spectacle stayed true to showing an innovative look. The focus on the models was a perfectly bedazzled eye, creating just enough glitter to balance the wearable with the over-the-top. What appeared to be tiny silver sequins adorned eyelids starting at the lash line and working out into a slight wing shape. Some were also glued onto the tops of the lashes for an added shimmering effect. A thin black line was penciled in under the lower lash line for definition and to give balance to the eye. The rest of the face was suitably bare, with sheer natural skin, a lightly defined brow and a light berry shade staining the lips.

Paris Fashion Week Fall 2013 backstage beauty: Our 3 favourite looks so far and FYI, ear cuffs are now a thing
Silver screen beauties at Dries Van Noten
First, we saw them at Rodarte Spring 2013. Then they returned at Thakoon this season, and here they are again at Dries Van Noten. Ear jewelry! Makeup artist Peter Philips is all about appliques (he’s behind those the crystal brows at Chanel and the glued on neoprene under eyeliner seen at Fendi Spring 2013) so it didn’t surprise us that he was the one to adhere rock crystal formations on nine Dries Van Noten models’ ears. His make up was kept simple—black liner, matte skin and filled in brows—so as not to compete with the many twinkling elements in the collection. Hairstylist Paul Hanlon did marcel waves, with Old Hollywood as a reference. Think: A magical dance scene featuring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, aka what Channing and Charlize were trying to achieve at the Oscars. -
Looks we loved: Jil Sander’s petal-pink lips, cobalt lashes at Stella McCartney and the Ruffian velvet moon mani
While the majority of our favourite looks are compiled in the Fall/Winter beauty trend report there were three in particular that we couldn’t stop thinking about. Whether you’re seeking the perfect pink lip or want to try a twist on the traditional manicure, we’re sure you’ll love them too.
