Top 10 Fashion Influencers of 2012: We count down the biggest and best moments from Raf to Rihanna and back again
By Randi Bergman and Meredith Gillies
2012 has been quite the year. We’ve waited for Carly Rae Jepsen’s phone to ring since what feels like forever, we developed major girl crushes on Girls director/writer, Lena Dunham, and we felt like we’d never be as cool as Azealia Banks. Jepsen, Banks and Dunham may have rocked our worlds this year, but in the world of fashion, important things that have gone down too. There have been soaring highs, crashing lows, and shocking changes for celebrities, designers and even journalists.
Designer shifts at Balenciaga and Dior that are just a sampling of what seems like an endless list of fashion shakeups that went down over the past 12 months including Stefano Pilati and Hedi Slimane at Yves Saint Laurent, YSL becoming simple Saint Laurent Paris and more. And speaking of shakeups, Kristen Stewart’s rise from a teen queen to a heartbreaking fragrance face has been epic to say the least. So let’s look back, reflect, and count down together the events that made 2012 so real.

Romeo Beckham stars in Burberry’s Spring 2013 campaign (plus: take a look back at the brand’s incredible video retrospective)
As if it didn’t already, Burberry Prorsum has really been capturing our attention as of late. It started with a three-minute video that compiled the best moments of the British house’s year in 2012 and today, the Spring 2013 campaign has been released and Romeo Beckham (yes, the son of Victoria and David) stars in it alongside major British models like Cara Delevingne.
Romeo Beckham (we’ll call him Lil’ Romeo #2) has barely been on the earth for a decade and his first foray into modeling was captured by none other than Mario Testino—not a shabby start to what we assume will be a lengthy career. We’re hoping some behind the scenes footage from the Spring 2013 campaign shoot pops up in the year in review video that we hope will be released this time next year.

There’s an old-world charm to the season’s lace dresses, rich brocades and ornate filigree. On the many runways of Fall 2012, embellishment made its appearance—with intricate beading on suits at Louis Vuitton, brocade on party dresses at Dolce & Gabbana and shimmering jacquard pants at Marni amongst its best moments. We chose it as the starting point for our Winter 2012/13 Issue photo shoot starring Annabelle Tsaboukas, who was cast in the role of a modern-day Marie Antoinette. Get lost in the appliqué and make these luxe looks part of your own holiday story. Our behind-the-scenes photos from the shoot and shop-the-shoot picks will show you how.

Nicolas Ghesquière’s Balenciaga Top 10: A look back at the designer’s best and most influential collections
Take a look back at Nicolas Ghesquière’s Balenciaga Top 10 »
As any entry-level fashion historian might know, clothing is as good a representation of what’s going on in the world as any. At a more micro level, its one of the best ways to chart changing aesthetics through time. What better proponent of so many of fashion’s most recent aesthetic shifts than Nicolas Ghesquière, creative director of Balenciaga, who announced today that after 15 years with the brand, he’d be stepping down. As someone who was so effected by Ghesquière’s genius while wading through my own fashion discovery (namely the one-two punch of Spring 2007 and Spring 2008), this news is real sucky. On the bright side, it’s a great time to look back at just how unbelievably influential Ghesquière was in starting so many recurring trends.

Beauty magnified: Examining Lanvin’s strong yet simple Fall 2012 runway look
See how the Lanvin Fall 2012 hair and makeup was done »
Alber Elbaz celebrated his 10th anniversary at Lanvin with a collection for Fall 2012 that featured bold colour, feminine silhouettes and loads of embellishment. The Lanvin beauty team—which included hairstylist Guido Palau and makeup artist Pat McGrath—accented the look with thickly lined eyes and soft hair. The result was a strong yet simple look: complexions were clean and glowing, the hair had a subtle bend and mouths were lightly dabbed with lip balm. Pat McGrath made this beauty statement all about the eyes. Inspired by the idea of a pen and ink illustration, she drew an exaggerated black wing that covered the lid and extended out. Read on as we examine the runway look for Lanvin Fall 2012 in full, complete with tips, tricks and the five products you need to try the hair and makeup at home.

Jump to trend: FUN FUR | EQUESTRIAN | LEATHER | GEOMETRIC

We’ve taken inspiration from some of our favourite Fall 2012 runways and made the looks ready for the streets. From geometric prints á la Prada paired with a classic pair of jeans to a tough leather jacket as seen at Gareth Pugh with a badass studded ring. We’re also into having some fun with fur and taking the pelts out of their natural hues and wearing bold orange vests like at Blumarine and green-cuffed gloves paired with a delicate watch to make the look a little bit more casual. And if wearing fur isn’t your jam, try looking like you’re riding a horse with some equestrian inspired gear from riding pants to classic knee high boots. Hop to it and get on board with some of our favourite looks for fall. We swear you’ll like it.

Emma Stone’s brought back her bangs
The stars came out en masse last night at Elle’s 19th Annual Women in Hollywood Celebration, but there was one celebrity in particular that came out with a bang. Literally.
Emma Stone debuted a new hairstyle at the event, and yes, it includes bangs. We last saw her a few weeks ago during Paris Fashion Week where she was spotted (sans bangs) sitting front row at Miu Miu and looking very Old Hollywood. But last night the actress, who presented at the event with Allison Janney, accentuated her new blonde bangs in a mod-ish pink and white dress from Valentino Resort 2013.
