Top 10 Fashion Influencers of 2012: We count down the biggest and best moments from Raf to Rihanna and back again
By Randi Bergman and Meredith Gillies
2012 has been quite the year. We’ve waited for Carly Rae Jepsen’s phone to ring since what feels like forever, we developed major girl crushes on Girls director/writer, Lena Dunham, and we felt like we’d never be as cool as Azealia Banks. Jepsen, Banks and Dunham may have rocked our worlds this year, but in the world of fashion, important things that have gone down too. There have been soaring highs, crashing lows, and shocking changes for celebrities, designers and even journalists.
Designer shifts at Balenciaga and Dior that are just a sampling of what seems like an endless list of fashion shakeups that went down over the past 12 months including Stefano Pilati and Hedi Slimane at Yves Saint Laurent, YSL becoming simple Saint Laurent Paris and more. And speaking of shakeups, Kristen Stewart’s rise from a teen queen to a heartbreaking fragrance face has been epic to say the least. So let’s look back, reflect, and count down together the events that made 2012 so real.

Quotable: Angelina Jolie has no idea what all the leg fuss is about
Angelina Jolie’s right leg was the undeniable star of the Oscar’s. It became the season’s breakout meme, taking over the Internet with a Twitter account and “Legbombing” app. Of course, the always-altruistic Jolie doesn’t think so. The actress told the Huffington Post about how she was just “having a night,” normal legs and all: “I […]

Rooney! Emma! Angelina! Here are 5 of our favourite beauty moments from the Oscars
Well, our vote for the biggest upset at this year’s Oscars has to be the makeup. From Michelle Williams’ usual routine of a glossed lip and lightly lined eye to Cameron Diaz’s typical pink lipstick, it seemed like almost all the top stars were playing it safe on the red carpet. Neutral shades and sheer nail polish abound! That being said, amongst all the usual suspects it’s still possible to find inspiration—like Rooney Mara’s perfect brows, Angelina Jolie’s flawless red lip, and Emma Stone’s all-over pink shimmer. We’ve rounded up five of our favourite beauty outliers from the red carpet and have behind-the-scenes tips from the makeup artists who created each look.

They said/We said: Angelina Jolie’s right leg sweeps the internet after its debut at last night’s Oscars
To those who thought Uggie the dog, of The Artist fame, would have upstaged last night’s Academy Awards, it seems that you’ve underestimated the power of Angelina Jolie. And her right leg. The movie star repeatedly—and that’s an emphatic repeatedly—showed off her gam through the up-to-there slit in her strategically-fitting Atelier Versace velour gown à la Wonder Woman (read: hand on hip, right leg far, far, far out). The superhero stance had people everywhere asking, “Doesn’t she have a million six children (not to mention a stylist) to tell her to close her legs?”
Alas, there was nobody to coerce the leg into a friendly retreat as it popped out again and again and finally made its way onto the internet and became a meme. Before the end of the show, there were 3,339 tweets per minute about the “Angeleg,” a bona fide Twitter account with 12,500 followers, and a do-it-yourself ‘Legbombing’ tool. Even the forward-thinking screenwriters of The Descendants popped an exaggerated Jolie pose during their acceptance speech (which, dare we say, was hands down the best of the night).
We’re hoping that “Angelegging” won’t become the red-carpet equivalent of the famous Claudia Schiffer runway walk. But hey, anything to liven up a somewhat predictable red carpet, right?

Things that make you go huh?: Shailene Woodley bombs the red carpet, only to kill it at the after party
With so many highly paid perfectionists working together to create seamless red carpet moments for Hollywood’s A-listers, it never ceases to amaze us when a starlet goes so wrong that there was never any way it was right. Especially when said starlet is stunning, has legs for days, and is the breakout star of an Oscar-nominated film (co-starring George Clooney, no less). Such was the sad case of Shailene Woodley and her dowdy Valentino Couture at last night’s Oscars. The dress itself? Beautiful. On a 22-year-old? Hells no. With the hem and sleeves competing for length, and the strategically placed bust detailing, this dress look like it was trying to cover Woodley up, when it really should have been showing her off. We just don’t get it!

SNP’s word of the day: Awkscars
Word: Awkscars
Meaning: The Oscars, now with 90 per cent more wtf-ness.
Usage: “More like the AWKSCARS. Everything is so f***ing awkward! I love it!” — a tweet by Aubrey Plaza, who awesomely goes by @evilhag.

MFW Diary: Dolce & Gabbana takes top honours in our Oscars-style recap of day five in Milan
In celebration of the Oscars, I’ve decided to give out a few awards of my own for day five of Milan Fashion Week. Drum roll, por favor.
BEST SHOW DU JOUR goes to… Dolce & Gabbana. The moving opera soundtrack (ah, I love Pavarotti!), the ornate rose-strewn chandeliers, the heavily embroidered Sicilian-inspired looks (think black and gold, beads, crystals, lace, and jewels); Dolce & Gabbana was the fashion moment of the day!

Viola, Gwyneth, Jessica, and Stacy: Our 4 favourite hairstyles from the Oscars red carpet
See all the red carpet hair up close! »
We’re still pouring over all the red carpet pictures from last night’s Academy Awards but there were four hairstyles that stood out the very moment we saw them. Twitter exploded when Viola Davis stepped out with her natural hair and we have to agree—the cropped cut is stunning and the slight red colour takes her green dress to a whole new level. Stacy Keibler‘s makeup may have veered into “too tanned” territory, but her Old Hollywood hair was impeccable. The low side part was fixed in the back with a roll that blended into the rest of her waves perfectly—a trick we’ll certainly be copying in the future! Onto Jessica Chastain: based on the last time we saw her hair down, we’re guessing she was wearing extensions, but you would never know it. All extension-loving starlets need to find out who her hairstylist is, pronto! They were flawless, and the long, cascading curls were so elegant we’ll forgive her half-updo. And finally, if you can take a moment to stop admiring Gwyneth Paltrow‘s red-carpet cape, you’ll be equally impressed by her low-slung ponytail. From the front it had the appearance of a sleek faux bob, and from the back it was so sculpted and voluminous—but without a hint of the crown teasing that most other red-carpet ponies tend to acquire.
