I’m Sorry, But the Peplum Is Back
Love it or hate it, nothing garners a visceral reaction quite like the polarizing style of the peplum. With flared fabric gathered at the waist and a protruding flounce at the hips, the signature silhouette tends to rub people the wrong way (literally). This is why it puzzles me ever-so-slightly to announce its return. Today, […]

Inside Thursday’s Operanation ball: 29 pictures of partygoers and opera singers, Nelly Furtado, the Arkells and more!
See the full gallery of Operanation party pictures »
Last Thursday opera lovers, patrons of the arts and faces who frequent Toronto’s party circuit came together to support the Canadian Opera Company for Operanation 9: Sweet Revenge. Attendees reflected the event’s theme of high-brow-opera-meets-pop-culture-concert well: Women in floor-length evening gowns navigated the many staircases of the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts with ease—proving there’s no architectural challenge a mermaid dress can’t master—while others used the Centre’s sprawling steps as seating throughout the night.
Actress Gabrille Miller looked stunning in a peplum’d dress from Lucian Matis Fall 2012 while Nelly Furtado had two costume changes throughout the night, starting with a gown by Denis Gagnon and later switching into a Holy Tee dress. On the third floor a group of Argo players attracted many eligible ladies—perhaps the popularity of The Bachelor Canada has given the CFL a new social standing?

TIFF 2012: Dinner with the divine Marion Cotillard in Dior Couture
Divine. There is no other word to describe Marion Cotillard, who floated into last night’s Rust & Bone 2012 Toronto International Film Festival dinner in Look 38, straight off the Dior Haute Couture runway. The tweed strapless dress with back peplum from Raf Simons’s first collection for the house will be a tough red carpet act to follow for stars attending TIFF this year. The dinner, hosted by Moet & Chandon champagne, was held at the subterranean Michael’s on Simcoe St. Cotillard arrived with co-star Matthias Schoenarts before later zipping off to the TIFF film screening at the Elgin theatre. At the dinner, Marion Cotillard politely posed with anyone brave enough to be compared to her aqua blue eyes, rose pink lips and hair swooped up into an elegant wave. Marion Cotillard’s royal blue silk satin slingbacks with yellow tulle trim were a hopeful sign that the skyscraper heel trend is finis (as of TIFF 2012 that is). The needle-toe shoes were set on a low comma heel, an innovation designed by Roger Vivier for Christian Dior back in the ‘50s.

Designer DIY: How to create a peplum in under 30 minutes. No sewing required!
It’s all about the waist this spring with croptops, drop-waists and our favourite look of the moment, the peplum. One particular Cushnie et Ochs look, complete with a slick patent peplum, caught our eye. So we decided to make it, natch (and for a meager $17, too).

Even The Hunger Games can’t resist the power of the peplum
Like the rest of the world, we hit the theatres this weekend to see the much-anticipated The Hunger Games, and while there are so many things we could talk about (Lenny Kravitz’s gold eyeliner! the flame dress!), we’re most fixated on the peplum’s rise to mainstream movie popularity showcased in the film. Effie Trinket, the […]

TFW Diary: Festooned peplums! Sumptuous furs! Check out 30 luxe looks from last night’s Pink Tartan show

See our backstage beauty report from Pink Tartan »
See all Toronto Fashion Week coverage »Pink Tartan’s Kimberley Newport Mimran aimed her Fall 2012 collection at the same glossy working woman as usual—the one who sweeps elegantly from the office to a cocktail party—though perhaps this season she’s had a promotion. The textures were extra sumptuous, from a fluffy rose-pink jacket to a deep red velvet coat with furry sleeves to a full feather peplum. This is the collection to shop for the peplum trend this fall: the waist frill appeared on sleeveless shells with lean flared trousers or over long bandage dresses. (One of those was worn by model Kate Somers, with a new wispy, shoulder-length haircut, who decided her vertiginous pointy heels had to come off at the end of the runway, to cheers from the socialite-filled crowd.) Newport-Mimran made a strong case for selling us our fall coats—most of the looks were dominated by their toppers, and we have our eye on a gorgeous Céline-esque forest green wool coat with leather sleeves. Really, a promotion deserves a little self-present.
