5 tricks from Lily Collins’ TIFF red carpet look that will totally change the way you apply makeup
With bright hazel eyes and possibly the best eyebrows since Brooke Shields, it’s pretty much impossible for Lily Collins to not look stunning. While in Toronto this month for the TIFF premiere of Writers she walked the red carpet in an extremely elaborate Balmain dress—but it was her the simplicity of her glowing skin and dramatic lashes that held the look together. “I told Lily that I think this [red carpet] was a dress moment more than a hair and makeup moment [but we] still wanted to make her skin and her eyelashes a star,” explained celebrity makeup artist Beau Nelson. To do so, he used a full range of Victoria’s Secret VS Pro makeup products—but the real beauty was all in the application. Here are five tricks that will change the way you apply makeup:

TIFF 2012: Red carpet round up! From Selena and Nina to Gwyneth and Keira, vote for the best dressed in Toronto
See all the dresses up close!»
After a whirlwind ten-plus days, the red carpet was rolled up and TIFF 2012 came to a close. While we’ll have to wait another year for that many A-list starts to return to Toronto, there were plenty of style hits worth reminiscing about. On the opening night of the festival everyone was anticipating Kristen Stewart’s appearance for her role in On the Road, and afterwards everyone was talking about her Zuhair Murad dress—and not her personal life (for once!). At The Perks of Being a Wallflower party, Emma Watson wore a flowery Erdem dress, and her co-star (and FASHION cover girl) Nina Dobrev was in Monique Lhuillier.
Speaking of young TIFF stars, Selena Gomez was all over town promoting Spring Breakers and wore a form-fitting leopard print Dolce & Gabbana dress for the premiere, while Jennifer Lawrence went for Dior Couture to promote The Silver Linings Playbook. And the always stylish Elle Fanning was right on trend in a Miu Miu pantsuit while walking the red carpet for her film Ginger & Rosa. Meanwhile, TIFF veterans continued to wow fans who patiently waited to spot them on the red carpet—with many opting for all-black attire. Gwyneth Paltrow wore Tom Ford at the premiere of Thanks for Sharing, Keira Knightley was in Elie Saab at Anna Karenina and Amy Adams celebrated her powerful role in The Master by wearing Marchesa.
Even though most eyes were on her boyfriend, Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes held her own throughout TIFF in a beautiful Dolce & Gabbana gown at the party for their film The Place Beyond the Pines. Emily Blunt also had the support of her boyfriend on the red carpet, and looked chic in a white Tory Burch dress to celebrate the premiere of Arthur Newman. And without even knowing it, the two females stars of To the Wonder, Rachel McAdams and Olga Kurylenko, wore the same designer (and even same colour!) to their premiere—but each still looked completely different and not to mention flawless in their Elie Saab numbers.

TIFF 2012: Nina Dobrev, Daniel Radcliffe and Agyness Deyn got their swag on at NKPR’s IT Lounge
See the celebs that stopped by NKPR’s IT Lounge during TIFF »
The NKPR IT Lounge is undoubtedly one of Toronto’s swankiest TIFF gifting suites. Stars like Catherine Deneuve, Olivia Wilde, Ryan Gosling and AnnaLynne McCord have all stopped by in years past and with NKPR amping up their megawattage with the addition of legendary fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier shooting celebs for a day during TIFF, it’s not hard to see why boldface names like Daniel Radcliffe, Nina Dobrev, Adrien Grenier and Agyness Deyn stopped by.

TIFF 2012: Rachel McAdams and To the Wonder co-star Olga Kurylenko toast their latest film in matching green Elie Saab dresses

How could two green Elie Saab dresses wind up side by side on the TIFF red carpet? “It’s a complete coincidence,” Olga Kurylenko assured me at the TIFF after party for To The Wonder hosted by Hugo Boss and GQ and held at a condo development on Richmond St. West in Toronto earlier this week.

The 25th annual M.A.C Fashion Cares gala set off with a bang on Sunday night, with a sequin-suited Elton John performing alongside Janelle Monae, Scissor Sisters, Chantal Kreviazuk and others in support of the the AIDS Committee of Toronto and Elton John AIDS Foundation. Co-chaired by Michael King and Elton John’s husband David Furnish, the show, aptly billed as a night of glitter and light, also featured speeches (and even a little runway work-out) by Linda Evangelista and Dean and Dan Caten of Dsquared.

TIFF 2012: Tales of dinner and fake identities Emily Blunt and Colin Firth
See the Arthur Newman TIFF premiere photos »
It’s not often that we are stumped by what a star is wearing on the red carpet. Even the great fashion minds of the Bay were baffled by the make of Emily Blunt’s ruched tulle dress, worn to yesterday’s TIFF premiere of Arthur Newman, the film in which she stars alongside Colin Firth as a lost soul in ripped tights, black work-boots and kohl-rimmed eyes who helps concoct a new identity for a man (Colin Firth) who runs away from his family.
“Marchesa maybe?” mused The Room creative director Nicholas Mellamphy, who between Paris, London, Milan and New York, has seen pretty much every frock there is to see for Fall 2012. It turns out the pretty off-white number was made from scraps of tulle reclaimed from Tory Burch’s cutting room floor.
“Colin Firth’s wife Livia has the Project Green Runway challenge which encourages designers to use their leftover materials,” Blunt proudly declared, showing me her recycled brass necklace, and beaded FEED bag clutch. “I am very proud to be supporting her.”

TIFF 2012: Nina Dobrev wore 3 floral dresses this weekend. Which is your favourite?

Home-grown teen queen and FASHION cover girl Nina Dobrev was back in Toronto this weekend to promote her upcoming flick The Perks of Being a Wallflower at TIFF. As if to be taking the film’s title quite literally, Dobrev donned several stunning floral looks over the course of her TIFF appearances. So stunning in fact, that’s pretty much impossible to choose a favourite. But let’s try, shall we?
At Saturday’s TIFF red carpet premiere, Nina Dobrev wore an Oscar-worthy white Monique Lhuillier gown that featured intricate black floral embroidery. One of the frothy confections that has helped amp up this year’s TIFF celebrations from fairly casual to megawatt, the dress induced jealousy-gasps all around at the film’s after party later that night. (Co-star Emma Watson was also feeling the florals, btw, equally stunning in Erdem.)

TIFF 2012: Ewan McGregor, Petra Nemcova, Dustin Hoffman and Gael Garcia Bernal were just a few of the many stars at Grey Goose Soho House last night

Sunday night continued to prove that no matter what TIFF happenings are going on, it all comes back to the Grey Goose Soho House. At the onset of the evening, cast from both The Sessions and Byzantium stopped by before hitting the red carpet. Irish ingenue Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton had dinner prior to the world premiere of their dark vampire flick Byzantium, while Helen Hunt, William H. Macy, John Hawkes and The Sessions director Ben Lewin mingled with friends.
A private party was held on the third floor for At Any Price, with Dennis Quaid, Clancy Brown and Maika Monroe in attendance. Considering that Maika Monroe’s The Bling Ring cast-mate Emma Watson was at Soho House the night before we had hoped for a repeat appearance, but alas, no luck. (Perhaps Emma Watson was off somewhere else, catching up with Daniel Radcliffe who’s also currently in Toronto filming The F Word? We can only dream!)

TIFF 2012: Which of Jennifer Lawrence’s 3 Katniss-inspired dresses do you like best?
View Jennifer Lawrence’s TIFF looks »
Even IRL, Jennifer Lawrence is the girl on fire. Choosing very different yet equally striking looks for three of her TIFF appearances, looked as if to be playing three Cinna-approved parts. First, it was what we’ll call the District 12 look: At the premiere of A Place Beyond the Pines, Lawrence paired a cobalt blue lace Dior halter dress with a simple cat-eye, and pulled back hair (we can’t confirm a side braid). Then it was what we’ll call the Ceaser Flickerman show look: At her own red carpet premiere for The Silver Linings Playbook, Jennifer Lawrence seriously thrilled in a multi-coloured strapless Dior Couture gown, cranberry lips and straight, side-pinned hair. Earlier today, the actress switched it up once more, in a form-fitting white Antonio Berardi day-dress at press conference alongside co-star Bradley Cooper. On her way to the conference, Jennifer Lawrence was shot wearing oversized Ray-Bans, which amped the city slicker look up a notch further. So, which did you like best?

Overheard at TIFF 2012: One part of Ryan Gosling looked so good on the red carpet that it deserves its own Twitter
It’s clearly not enough to be famous and have a regular old Twitter account these days. No—the really popular accounts are those run by specific celebrity parts, like Miley’s Bun or Angelina’s Right Leg. And considering that Ryan Gosling is already the most meme-ified actor out there, it’s high time a certain asset of his […]

TIFF 2012: Jennifer Lawrence hung out with Kristen Stewart at the Soho House last night (Jake Gyllenhaal, Kate Hudson and Andy Samberg were there too!)
See the Soho House party photos »
As per usual, the Grey Goose Soho House was hoppin’ and poppin’ with celebs last night, as the staple spot hosted private parties for The Reluctant Fundamentalist, End of Watch and Silver Linings Playbook. Kate Hudson, in a Gwyneth-at-the-Oscars-esque white floor-length Atelier Versace dress, mingled pre-The Reluctant Fundamentalist red carpet. The bearded and babeular Jake Gyllenhaal popped by too, to toast his film End of Watch alongside Anna Kendrick and America Ferrera (who is really looking great these days, we might add).
At that point, it was still early and the celebs in attendance were all chatting up their co-stars and pals. But then Jennifer Lawrence showed up, and completely flipped the celebs-who-are-friends continuum on its head when she, in a body-hugging scale-like dress, started chatting to none other than Kristen Stewart! Could Katniss and Bella be new BFFs? Could a Twilight-meets-The Hunger Games movie be in the works? Are we taking this too far? Maybe. Kristen Stewart, who seemed to have shaken Thursday night’s glamazon look, was back to her usual jeans-and-t-shirt pairing. As an equally awesome addition to the mix: Jennifer Lawrence’s parents Gary and Karen Lawrence were also in attendance at the Soho House to toast their daughter’s TIFF premiere.
