Dsquared2 Wants Everyone to Feel Included
Fashion saved the lives of Dan and Dean Caten. Twenty years before Dsquared2 was even an idea, the identical designer twins grew up in Toronto, where they experienced incessant bullying and harassment for being different, feminine and poor. “Together we weathered all the storms, always finding shelter in each other,” reflects Dean. “It wasn’t until […]

Canada’s top talent brings it all back home for the first-ever CAFA Awards
See photos from inside the CAFA Awards »
Toronto had its first-ever dose of fashion Oscars this past weekend, as the best in Canadian talent gathered for the inaugural Canadian Arts and Fashion Awards at the Fairmont Royal York. Aiming to shine a light on often politely under-appreciated homegrown talent, awards were given out to the best in design, styling, photography, modelling and to one person who stands in a category all by herself: Jeanne Beker. The television host/journo of 30+ years was awarded the CAFAs first Vanguard Award for well, everything.
Looking around the glittering ballroom, there was a real sense of “everyone who’s anyone is here,” which is quite the feat on a blustery night in the middle of winter. Topping that A-list was be model Coco Rocha, who stunned as no one else (in the room) could in a one-shouldered white gown by Dsquared while accepting the award for Model of the Year. Also in town, designing wonder boys Dean and Dan Caten, who scored the Best International Designer award. Taking a page out of the CFDA’s book, the CAFAs partnered with Swarovski to fund the Emerging Talent Award, which gave $10,000 and a mentorship by Joe Fresh founder Joe Mimran to Sarah Stevenson, the floral-happy designer who also won TFI New Labels last spring. With so much pegged on her impending success, it seems sure that her name will rise to the rank of fellow winner Jeremy Laing, who picked up the much-deserved award for Womenswear Designer of the Year.

Inside the Anna Dello Russo for H&M party in Paris: 26 photos of the international fashion crowd celebrating zany accessories with champagne, lollipops and Azealia Banks

Most 51-year-olds would not attempt a minidress with side cut-outs, or at least they shouldn’t. But then most 51-year-olds are not Anna Dello Russo, fashion director at large for Vogue Nippon come street style megastar.
Fashion’s best-known dress-up enthusiast arrived at the Paradis Latin nightclub for the party celebrating her upcoming collaborative accessory collection with H&M, which launches on October 4, in fitting style: descending from the ceiling on a throne of giant fake pink roses, Marilyn Monroe style. Her aqua minidress radiated crystal and gold sunbursts, while golden alligators, which were affixed to her ADR for H&M sunglasses, spanned her brows. One of the best performers in the biz, Anna Dello Russo treated the crowd to a performance alongside fellow European editor and style star Giovanna Battaglia, who had accessorized to the nines in Anna Dello Russo’s H&M collection and even a butterfly-adorned golden headpiece.

Co-chaired by Michael King and Elton John’s husband David Furnish, the show, aptly billed as a night of glitter and light, also featured speeches (and even a little runway work-out) by Linda Evangelista and Dean and Dan Caten of Dsquared.

View our vintage Fashion Cares photos
This Sunday September 9 marks the 25th Anniversary event of M.A.C Viva Glam Fashion Cares put on by the Elton John AIDS Foundation and The AIDS Committee of Toronto. Tickets are still available for this always glamorous event being held at the Sony Centre, which this year includes the likes of Janelle Monae, Scissor Sisters, Sky Ferreira and of course Elton John himself. Hosted by Canadian supermodel Linda Evangelista and homegrown designers Dean and Dan Caten of Dsquared, the evening will include a red carpet arrival, a cocktail reception, and a live fashion show of pieces inspired by the past 25 years of Fashion Cares. There will also be an exhibit that will showcase past Fashion Cares events through images, video and even costumes from Elton John’s personal collection. Look through our gallery to see some highlights of past Fashion Cares events, including Canadian model Donna DeMarco at 1988’s Fashion Blooms themed affair, as well as shots from more recent galas of Katy Perry and Lil’ Kim in a barely-there gold number. Tickets for the event right now range from $100 to $205 and are still available on Ticketmaster.

MFW diary: Arrivederci Milano!
The Linate airport is looking like one chic departure lounge early this morning. Grabbing a coffee before jetting off to Paris is: Style.com‘s Nicole Phelps, the Los Angeles Times’ Booth Moore, WWD‘s Miles Socha. Plus, there’s a whole gaggle of seriously chic NYC cool girls who I’m always sitting next to at shows that (even at my age) have a way of making me feel like the girl in the high school caf who eats alone. But enough about me, I haven’t had two seconds to tell you about the final day of Milan fashion week!

Holts throws an Olympic bash for Dean and Dan
My first week covering the 2010 Winter Games for FASHION was filled with several fashionable appearances courtesy of Dean and Dan Caten of Dsquared. First, there was their torch relay in North Van, and on Saturday, I met up with the twins again as they signed autographs at Holt Renfrew (holtrenfrew.com). A huge line awaited the boys (I’ve never seen so many people in the men’s department!), but they were gracious enough to give me a few minutes before meeting their fans.

Dsquared’s Dean and Dan Caten wore tuxedos for their torch run
The Olympic torch is officially in Vancouver! This morning, Dean and Dan Caten of Dsquared ran it a distance of 300 meters each along Mount Seymour Parkway in North Van. Asked if they did any training to prepare for the run, Dean said he ran a bit on the treadmill, and Dan said he “ran […]
