Beauty Fix: How to heal hair ruined by dry weather, a self-tanner that doesn’t smell (honestly!) and more

Nail polish often looks uneven because the natural texture of my nails shows through. Can I fix this?
The visual appearance of our naked nails is actually a significant indicator of our internal health, so it’s important to pay attention to what’s up when they’re bare. It’s normal to have ridges on your nails that run up and down lengthwise, and these are not a huge cause for concern. Buffing nails prior to applying polish may seem like a logical solution, but this can actually weaken your nails. A better solution is to use a ridge filling base coat, such as Joe Fresh Ridge Filler ($6, at Joe Fresh), in order to create a smooth, even surface for polish application. A quick coat of this before you apply your colored polish will balance everything out and make ridges a thing of the past. -
Beauty Fix: An extra way to protect your hair from heat-styling damage, your holiday beauty go-to and more

I heat-style my hair more in the winter because I wash it in the morning and don’t want to head out with damp hair in cold weather. How do I protect my hair against this increased contact with heat tools?
As soon as the temperature is low enough to freeze hair in the duration of a short stroll outside, air-drying season is officially over and blow-drying becomes necessary. Hopefully you’re in the habit of using a heat-protectant spray whenever you decide to turn on the hot tools, but if you’re especially concerned with heat damage switch up your shampoo and conditioner. Pantene Pro-V Heat Shield Shampoo and Conditioner ($6 each, at drugstores) is geared to defending your hair in each step of the cleansing and styling process. This shampoo and conditioner duo each contain a heat-activated oil that protects against heat styling up to 450 degrees, making it your go-to every time you’re planning on breaking out the hair dryer and flat iron. Using this shampoo and condition in conjunction with a thermal protectant spray should keep hair in tip top shape all year!

Best makeup brushes: Illamasqua, M.A.C and Make Up For Ever all have new and improved offerings for fall
New bristle technology and ergonomically designed brushes are changing the way we put on makeup. Time to toss those sponge-tip applicators.
There’s a plastic skull at the offices of British makeup brand Illamasqua. It’s neither paperweight nor homage to Alexander McQueen: It belongs to David Horne, the director of product development, who studies the model cranium when he’s designing makeup brushes to help him determine what shapes fit best with the bone structure of the face. “That’s where I start,” he says. “I think, ‘Where is this brush going to go?’” Most recently, Horne used the anatomy class teaching aid while developing the Blush Up Brush ($50, thebay.com), focusing on the spot “where the mandible connects with the zygomatic.” The result: densely packed bristles arranged in an oval shape that deposit and blend pigment better than the traditional lollipop silhouette, he says, because they fit in the natural groove below the cheekbone. “If you change the tools, you change the application by default.”
