The Best Nail Bar In Toronto Opens A Second Location In The West End
I first noticed Tips Nail Bar in 2006. Located above a salon at Danforth and Jones in Toronto, it caught my eye as I drove by because until then, there was nowhere to get nail services in my neighbourhood. I had been going to a downtown spa to get pedicures and I didn’t even bother […]

Beauty Fix: How to do a bubble-free nail sticker application, sensitive skin cleansing cures and more
Every week our Beauty Fix columnist takes on your questions about makeup, skincare, hair and more. Have a beauty question we haven’t answered? Email us at beautyfix@fashionmagazine.com.
My sensitive skin seems a bit irritated after cleansing. What can I do to calm it down?
This is a common gripe amongst sensitive-skinned individuals. The level of the skin’s visual irritation may be a fraction of the irritation happening below the surface, so spring into action. Ensure you’re using the correct type of cleanser for your skin. If you have skin that’s not only sensitive but also dry, using a milky or non-foaming cleanser is your best bet since they tend to be gentler at removing dirt and debris without draining the skin of natural moisture. If that’s all sorted, consider using a toner immediately after cleansing. While toner doesn’t necessarily have a place in everyone’s skincare regimen, a calming fluid like Simple Soothing Facial Toner ($11, well.ca), can really make a marked difference in how sensitive skin behaves. The fragrance-free formula contains witch hazel, panthenol, allantoin and chamomile, which tightens pores, restores skin, promotes cell turnover and soothes skin, respectively. -
Introducing Revlon’s Nude Expressions nail polish collection: 8 neutral shades that match your mani to your skin tone
See the complete Revlon Nude Expressions collection »
Amidst the neon nail polishes, textured manicures and creative nail art, sometimes all we want is a simple, polished manicure. Enter the new nail polish collection from Revlon that is giving us exactly that. The iconic beauty brand has just launched Nude Expressions, a collection of eight neutral nail polishes. The shades are designed to match many skin tones for a minimalist style that is right on trend with the 1990s beauty look of the moment.
Modeled by actress and Revlon representative Olivia Wilde, the limited edition polishes include shades such as “Cool Beige” and “Natural Tan.” Both light and dark hues are included, and they vary from pink to yellow undertones—making the colours seem more like foundation or concealer than a typical nail polish range. Indeed, the “mannequin hands” look is back.

Lucian Matis brings ’60s banana eyeliner back (with French outline nails to match!) for Fall 2013
See the makeup and nail art from Lucian Matis Fall 2013 »
It may have occurred at the very end of Toronto Fashion Week, but the makeup and nails at Lucian Matis set the bar for Fall 2013 beauty trends. Of course, having some talented heavyweights on board certainly helped: Revlon global artistic director Gucci Westman and Revlon nail expert Leeanne Colley were behind the retro look.
Despite a scheduling conflict that prevented Westman from actually being backstage, she didn’t want to pass up the chance to work with Lucian Matis. Skype sessions allowed for proper collaboration with the designer and once the look was finalized, her right-hand gal, Mimi Imanishi, led the team in Toronto.
“The inspiration for this look was Lucian’s gorgeous, monochromatic colour palette while incorporating safari khaki tones to the eye. This look is also very much inspired by the ’60s, specifically, the German model, Veruschka,” Westman said, via press release.

16 reasons why we still love nail art
There’s some debate right now as to whether nail art is still thriving as one of the biggest cosmetic trends. One one hand (see what we did there?) new nail art polishes, products and tools are being released almost every single day. On the other, when it comes to runways and red carpets, we didn’t see as many nail art designs this season as we have in the past. Whatever the trend, we’re still in love with nail art and it seems like most of the internet is too. Read on for some of the best tutorials and news stories that we’ve come across this week—and see how long you can resist reaching for a bottle of nail polish.

New best friends Katy Perry and Carly Rae Jepsen compare nail art on the red carpet (Can you guess which singer is still wearing her MMVA manicure?)
See Katy and Carly’s nail art up close! »
It looks like Katy Perry and Carly Rae Jepsen became besties after hanging out at the MMVAs in Toronto. While you’d think that the two bonded through their talents for making catchy number one hits, perhaps they’ve also connected over a love for nail art.

The scoop on Carly Rae Jepsen’s MMVA manicure! If there was an award for “Best Nails” she would have won it
Not only did Carly Rae Jepsen sweep last night’s MMVAs, taking home three awards and performing twice—she also took the nail art spotlight away from manicure enthusiast Katy Perry. Jepsen’s sparkly tips were hard to miss on stage, and given her multiple wins and performances there was plenty of on-camera time to scope them out. […]

It’s all about the burgundy manicure for fall. Plus: How to do Ruffian’s red and gold foil nails!
See our behind-the-scenes gallery from Ruffian »
Learn how to do the gold foil mani! »In the final days of Toronto Fashion Week, one thing was starting to become very apparent: deep red nails are going to be huge for fall. Chloé Comme Parris and Pink Tartan both used the same maroon Essie shade—“Wicked”—and similar colours had been popping up at international shows all season, including Ferragamo, Jenny Packham and Bill Blass. Rachel Roy leaned towards an aubergine-tinted red, while Yigal Azrouel dubbed his shade of choice “pinot noir.” At L.A.M.B., burgundy polish covered just the moon, leaving the rest of the nail bare. And where red appears, gold seems to follow: the Toronto shows for Jeremy Laing and Ruffian paired both colours on the same nail, whereas Marchesa alternated all-burgundy (Deborah Lippmann’s “Single Ladies”) and all-gold manicures down the runway.

TFW backstage beauty: Slick hair, soft shadows and tarnished nails at Jeremy Laing

See all Toronto Fashion Week coverage »Clean, simple and slightly androgynous was the idea for hair and makeup at Jeremy Laing. “It’s masculine, but with feminine tones to contrast the gender-bender look,” explained CoverGirl makeup pro Greg Wencel. Eyebrows were defined with a brow pencil, but the desired effect was for a full, soft brow—not a harsh or bold statement. Eyes were equally soft, with a light wash of CoverGirl Intense ShadowBlast in “Beige Blaze” and a dusting of warm eyeshadow on top. In a very Downton Abbey sort of move, no mascara was applied—this further impressed the idea of a masculine, androgynous look.
