Tie-Dye Is Back, Whether You Like It or Not
With the recent re-emergence of ‘90s fashion trends – first came chokers, then oversized hoop earrings, fanny packs and most recently track pants – it shouldn’t surprise anyone that, newsflash, tie-dye is back. Originally founded on ancient resist-dyeing techniques – which consists of protecting certain parts of a fabric so the dye doesn’t reach it […]

Try this now: Olivia Wilde’s eye-brightening Oscars makeup trick
Olivia Wilde’s black Valentino gown was one of the highlights on the 2014 Oscars red carpet last night, but upon closer inspection her makeup should be getting just as many accolades. While neutral makeup was certainly the biggest beauty statement last night, Wilde’s ’60s-inspired cat-eye was perfection—and it’s all thanks to one simple little trick.
Revlon makeup artist Melanie Inglessis was behind the look—she’s Wilde’s go-to makeup girl and told PopSugar that a typical makeup session is more like girl time, complete with gossip catchups and fun antics. For the 2014 Oscars, Inglessis described Wilde’s makeup as “effortless, chic and French.” She used two black Revlon eyeliners to complete the look, first Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner and then Revlon ColorStay Liquid Liner. The cat-eye’s retro appeal is all due to its thickness along the upper lid and the delicate-but-exaggerated flick at the end—but it really comes together thanks to a simple defining technique: a simple swipe of white eyeliner. (Look close: do you see it?)

Bouffant hair tutorial: How to add some Lana Del Rey-approved volume to your look
Alright kids, this hair tutorial is a fun one. Considering that she’s the cover of our Summer issue, it only made sense to take inspiration from Lana Del Rey for a hair tutorial. While she’s often spotted styling her hair in loose waves or a deep side part (both of which we just happen to have tutorials for as well: waves here, side-part here) Lana Del Rey’s fondness for the ’50s and ’60s mean she’s sported a bouffant more than once. The video for “National Anthem” is all about the Lana Del Rey bouffant and she wore her hair up for much of her summer festival tour in 2012.
While the thought of attempting to add a few inches of volume to your hair may seem overwhelming, the bouffant is easier to master than you may think. If you can tease your hair, you can do a bouffant. This bouffant hair tutorial was created in conjunction with Toronto-based hairstylist Margot Keith, who knows a thing or two about adding impressive amounts of volume to even the sleekest heads of hair. She’s also made learning how to do a bouffant totally foolproof. Read on for our complete step-by-step hair tutorial.

Lucian Matis brings ’60s banana eyeliner back (with French outline nails to match!) for Fall 2013
See the makeup and nail art from Lucian Matis Fall 2013 »
It may have occurred at the very end of Toronto Fashion Week, but the makeup and nails at Lucian Matis set the bar for Fall 2013 beauty trends. Of course, having some talented heavyweights on board certainly helped: Revlon global artistic director Gucci Westman and Revlon nail expert Leeanne Colley were behind the retro look.
Despite a scheduling conflict that prevented Westman from actually being backstage, she didn’t want to pass up the chance to work with Lucian Matis. Skype sessions allowed for proper collaboration with the designer and once the look was finalized, her right-hand gal, Mimi Imanishi, led the team in Toronto.
“The inspiration for this look was Lucian’s gorgeous, monochromatic colour palette while incorporating safari khaki tones to the eye. This look is also very much inspired by the ’60s, specifically, the German model, Veruschka,” Westman said, via press release.

Is Mad Men embracing ’70s style for season 6? The bouffants are getting bigger and sideburns are officially a thing
See all the Mad Men season six preview photos »
If you’re counting, there are just eleven Sundays to go before the return of Mad Men. That’s right: the sixth season will premiere on April 7 and already speculation is running rampant about what’s to come. Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner has always been extremely secretive about upcoming plot lines but this morning a series of photos were released to promote the show. Much to our delight, the perfectly staged black and white shots offer some insights as to what Don Draper and friends might be up to for season six.
First of all: The hair! Before we discuss what’s going on with the ladies, take moment to digest Pete Campbell’s new sideburns. His very-’70s hairstyle is already a fan favourite, considering that it took only a few hours to be commemorated with a Twitter account.
As for Megan and Betty, both are wearing the sort of hair that Lana Del Rey dreams about: voluminous bouffants complete with curled tendrils at the front. It’s very Priscilla Presley—and a style she was known for at the end of the ’60s. Which really only adds to the speculation that season six may jump ahead a year or two from where season five left off in 1967.

Tom Ford’s Spring 2013 ad campaign is the latest to revisit the swinging sixties
See the Tom Ford Spring 2013 Ad Campaign photos »
Joining the ranks of Prada, Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors, Tom Ford’s just-released Spring/Summer 2013 ad campaign takes us back to the swinging sixties. This time, the much referenced decade has been given a refreshing spin through Ford’s signature seductive lens, with four shots starring a Barbarella-style Karlina Caune and James Bond-esqe Simon Van Meervenne outfitted in Tom Ford’s latest designs.
The buzzed-about bondage-inspired gladiator heels that Anne Hathaway wore to the New York Les Miserables premiere are prominently featured in the ad, making for a slight tinge of the perverse—another Tom Ford signature. While Hathaway’s pair were completely vegan, the ones featured are made of patent gold leather and will also be available in croc print.

Michael Kors Spring 2013 Ad Campaign: Bright hues, thick stripes and fancy cars have us California dreamin’
View the Michael Kors Spring 2013 Ad Campaign »
The Michael Kors Spring 2013 ad campaign images have just hit the web and it has us daydreaming of sunshine and road trips. Models Simon Nessman and Karmen Pedaru (a Kors regular) are featured in the campaign shot by Mario Testino, which marks his 10 year anniversary with Michael Kors.
The shoot took place in Los Angeles and has a classic Americana vibe featuring stripes, sunglasses and muscle cars. The shots perfectly capture the Spring 2013 collection which features sportswear and mod inspired looks. Given that Kors was inspired by California for the collection, we’d say that poolside in Palm Springs would suit this collection perfectly.

Joe Fresh may have turned down the colour palette for its Spring 2013 collection but that’s not to say the collection was anything less than visually striking. Style Panel: How to wear patterned tights
Let’s face it: it’s November, the temperatures are dropping here in Canada and unless we want to get sick, we can’t continue to bare our legs to the world everyday like we did back in the summer. Thus, our legs need a warm friend to keep them company on these chilly days. Whether you call them nylons, pantyhose, stockings or tights, chances are we’ve all got a big drawer full of plain black ones to wear when the seasons start to get cold. This week, our Style Panel threw out the idea of only wearing boring plain tights and spruced things up by showing us how they wear patterned versions.
If you’re wary of pattern mixing, then let this be your chance to go bold. Even if there is no pattern in the rest of your outfit, the girls of our Style Panel show how easy it is to incorporate fall’s trends into your wardrobe even if it’s just on your gams. Polka dots seemed to be the go-to style for many members like Kassandra Camponi and Christina Cravero, while Vickie Laliotis showed off her legs that were covered in the ever-classic houndstooth pattern. So even if you’re not sure if you can pull off patterns elsewhere on your body, then just let those legs do the work for you.
Question 26: How have you mastered the patterned tights look? Read the answers now! »

Toronto Fashion Week Spring 2013: Super fresh skin and ’60s hair at Pink Tartan (plus, some pink hair too!)

The inspiration:
Grace Lee, Maybelline New York’s lead makeup artist: “We did a statement lip last season, it was all about that oxblood red lip, so [Kim Newport-Mimran] wanted to do the opposite. They look über, über fresh. Nothing about this makeup is about strong features… it’s super sheer, super pretty, super fresh.”Jorge Joao, Redken lead stylist: “It’s playful, something out of the ’60s—like how a little girl would want to push her hair out of the way. [The hair has] natural texture and an aggressive side sweep with the pin holding it into place.”
Top tips:
– The key to dewy skin is moisturizer—and lots of it! “It’s almost like she’s marinating in it!” said Grace Lee of just how much she applied to Charlotte Free, Maybelline New York’s international spokesmodel. Lee also used Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream in place of foundation to add further glow and hydration.
