If you’re looking for volume or planning on styling an updo, chances are you know that second-day hair is the way to go. Freshly washed hair can look too squeaky-clean and doesn’t hold its shape as well, plus there’s also a gritty, cool-girl factor that only second-day hair can provide. However, should you think this is a hair secret only used by women, think again. According to Vidal Sassoon hairstylist Chase Kusero, Jared Leto’s winning hair at the 2014 Oscars was all about the second-day style.

Should you want to copy the look (hey, those beachy waves would look just as good on a lady as they do on Leto) or get your guy on the edgy, long hair train, here’s how it was done. The night before the Academy Awards, Chase prepped Leto’s wet hair with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Waves Primer Spray and Pro Series Waves Pomade.

Olivia Wilde’s black Valentino gown was one of the highlights on the 2014 Oscars red carpet last night, but upon closer inspection her makeup should be getting just as many accolades. While neutral makeup was certainly the biggest beauty statement last night, Wilde’s ’60s-inspired cat-eye was perfection—and it’s all thanks to one simple little trick.

Revlon makeup artist Melanie Inglessis was behind the look—she’s Wilde’s go-to makeup girl and told PopSugar that a typical makeup session is more like girl time, complete with gossip catchups and fun antics. For the 2014 Oscars, Inglessis described Wilde’s makeup as “effortless, chic and French.” She used two black Revlon eyeliners to complete the look, first Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner and then Revlon ColorStay Liquid Liner. The cat-eye’s retro appeal is all due to its thickness along the upper lid and the delicate-but-exaggerated flick at the end—but it really comes together thanks to a simple defining technique: a simple swipe of white eyeliner. Sometimes, no matter how big a star you are, you can’t nab an invitation to the Oscars ceremony. But perhaps there’s more fun in dressing up for fun and hitting the party circuit than stuck in a theatre seat all night. Just take a look at the Oscar parties frequented by many a celeb and star—the glamorous styles didn’t stop at the red carpet. Just because you aren’t nominated for an Oscar doesn’t mean you can’t join in on the fun, right?

Taylor Swift went for some drama in a black sequined column dress with a sexy sheer back by Julien MacDonald, keeping things in line with her usual look of relaxed waves and a red pout. In the same vein as TSwift, Allison Williams upped the ante in a backless Emilia Wickstead gown in bright bubble gum pink, expertly tailored with a full skirt and a high pseudo-turtleneck. Both pretty young things kept their jewellery to a minimum going for statement earrings and blinding rings—a new engagement ring in Williams’ case.

While the Oscars may actually be about the awards, we all know that red carpet glamour is the main reason us fashion gals tune in. While movie critics and fans alike are all talking about Gravity’s production awards sweep and Leo’s latest loss for Best Actor, we still can’t get over how amazing Lupita Nyong’o looked last night. Given her run this past red carpet season, we went into the night knowing she was going to look unreal, but she blew us out of the park on Hollywood’s biggest night

Undeniably the belle of the ball, Nyong’o first wowed on the red carpet in a plunging powder blue Prada gown fit for a Grecian princess. The revealing gown was perfect for the Best Supporting Actress’ slight figure—anyone with too much décolletage would have been falling out of the dress. The deep-V front was mirrored in the back and in the open sides, and the full skirt was enriched with a dusting of crystal beading on the edges of the pleats to add some shimmer. The accessories were kept minimal, as to not over-power the gown, with Fred Leighton ear cuffs, gold wrap bracelet and a crystal and gold Prada Raso clutch.

Simplicity was key when it came to hair and makeup at the 2014 Oscars. Natural texture, neutral makeup and glowing skin made for the biggest beauty statements of the night, with just a few punchy lip colours and smoky eyes appearing on the red carpet.

For hair, the trend of the night was a tie between the deep side part and no part at all. Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams, Portia de Rossi, Naomi Watts and Lupita Nyong’o were just a few of the stars to opt for the pushed-back look, keeping hair off their faces. For Lawrence, her finger-combed, almost-bouffant gave a grown-up feel to her fresh pixie cut while still being a hairstyle that wasn’t overly fussy. Adams had one of the more structured hairstyles on the Oscars red carpet, but the slight bump at the front of her very-lacquered updo gave it playful appeal, while Watts’ Grace Kelly-inspired hair made us want to run our fingers through our own throughout the night. Rounding out the pushed-back looks was Nyong’o, who wore a delicate headband that anchored her dramatic style.

Breakout movie and style star of the year Best Actress in a Supporting Role winner for 12 Years a Slave Lupita Nyong’o pulled out all the stops in a periwinkle Prada princess gown complete with Fred Leighton headband and jewels. She’s been on a roll this season with carefully chosen frocks and gowns so it came as no surprise that she made the cut—we’re officially #TeamLupita. Fellow Best Actress in a Supporting Role nominee Jennifer Lawrence was next level in a red Dior peplum gown, which she yet again managed to trip on with cool girl ease.

Given her glamorous turn in American Hustle, it was only fitting that Best Actress nominee Amy Adams brought some retro glamour to the event. Keeping her best-dressed streak alive, Adams opted for a strapless Gucci Premiere gown, styling her signature red locks in a slick updo. Also sticking to the recent long blue dress trend was Sandra Bullock in Alexander McQueen. Always one to flawlessly flaunt her eccentric taste, Cate Blanchett maintained her ethereal style in a breathtaking appliqued gown by Armani Prive.

And of course, the Oscars 2014 red carpet wouldn’t have been complete without awards show mainstay Julia Roberts, marking 24 years since her first nomination, wearing Givenchy. Never one to be outdone, the legendary Meryl Streep celebrated her 18^th nomination in 35 years, looking as good as ever in Lanvin.

With such a variety of looks and styles, it easy to see why the Oscars 2014 red carpet is arguably the year’s biggest bonanza of beauty and dazzling gowns.
