In the beauty world, there are a handful of trends that we never seem to get tired of—a good cat eye being one of them. Because it’s such a versatile and fresh look, we often forget that it’s been around for ages. Think Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot. Heck, Cleopatra was rocking this look back in Ancient Egypt.

However, it’s definitely one technique that is not easy to master and can easily discourage those with shaky hands. With summer in full force it’s safe to say we’ve all resorted to our classic beauty routines to keep our faces looking golden and our lips pouting a perfect shade of pink. The warmer season has always called for neon nails and beachy waves, right? Right…until now. We’ve put together 5 awesome summer beauty updates that are sure to keep you looking fresh (and on trend) day and night. Don’t worry, we kept your favourite colours and ‘dos in mind, but we’ve just stepped them up a notch—or down in some cases.

Olivia Wilde’s black Valentino gown was one of the highlights on the 2014 Oscars red carpet last night, but upon closer inspection her makeup should be getting just as many accolades. While neutral makeup was certainly the biggest beauty statement last night, Wilde’s ’60s-inspired cat-eye was perfection—and it’s all thanks to one simple little trick.

Revlon makeup artist Melanie Inglessis was behind the look—she’s Wilde’s go-to makeup girl and told PopSugar that a typical makeup session is more like girl time, complete with gossip catchups and fun antics. For the 2014 Oscars, Inglessis described Wilde’s makeup as “effortless, chic and French.” She used two black Revlon eyeliners to complete the look, first Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner and then Revlon ColorStay Liquid Liner. The cat-eye’s retro appeal is all due to its thickness along the upper lid and the delicate-but-exaggerated flick at the end—but it really comes together thanks to a simple defining technique: a simple swipe of white eyeliner. Can we get a what what for eyeliner? With endless formulas and application methods, eyeliner is one of the most versatile products in our makeup bags. While some prefer a subtle smudged line, others dig the high drama that comes with cat-eyes and winged tips. Seeking a pop of colour? Add a quick swipe of bright-blue liner. Want to make your eyes stand out? Smudge a little kohl at your lashline. However you wear eyeliner, there’s no wrong way to do it. With retro styles still going strong, cat-eye liner is one makeup trend that isn’t going away—and it’s easy to see why. The cat-eye gives off a seductive cool-girl vibe and often is appropriate for both day and night. This beauty look was once known as Amy Winehouse’s signature, but with stars from Lana Del Rey to Gwyneth Paltrow favouring cat-eye makeup, it really is a look that anyone can wear.

If you’re a fan of loose curls and beachy waves, listen up. While backstage at the Tanya Taylor Fall 2013 show I witnessed an incredibly inventive way to add movement and texture to hair without relying on a curling iron.

Justin German, Pantene Pro-V’s consulting stylist, wanted “dropped out waves” for the ’60s-inspired look, which meant no structured ringlets were welcome. Instead, German added texture and movement to the hair by rolling pieces up into pin curls and setting them with a quick clamp of the flatiron. “To make it a little more random we [rolled] some one way and some the other way,” German explained of the technique. “We didn’t want it to look like it was done with a curling iron.” Finally, he set everything in place with a quick spritz of Pantene Pro-V Stylers Flexible Hold Hairspray.

Something interesting happened on the People’s Choice Awards red carpet last night. Taylor Swift said “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” to her traditional beauty look while Kaley Cuoco went a little bit country with Carrie Underwood-inspired hair and makeup. Both stars graced the People’s Choice Awards stage many times throughout the night—Swift took home the award for Favourite Country Artist and Cuoco hosted the show—but when it came to beauty, we think Taylor Swift definitely comes out on top.

The inspiration:
Daniel Di Tommaso, Sebastian core stylist: “Super, super tight and very, very shiny. [Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong] wanted to make sure that when we pulled the hair back it was almost stretching the eyes.”

Melissa Gibson, M.A.C makeup key: “[Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong] sent a photograph that had a kind of ’50s-ish feel to it [and then] we were talking about the clothing which is so structured, and you think, ‘architectural, how does that come into makeup?’ The idea behind a graphic liner [is that] it’s still a play on what a ’50s liner would be if you were to modernize it, make it a bit more edgy and structural.”

Get the look:
– The super-tight ponytail for Greta Constantine Spring 2013 was actually created by bonding two ponytails together. After wetting down the hair, Di Tommaso brushed Sebastian Shine Crafter Wax through to tame any flyaways. Hair was brushed back into bump-free ponytails and the ends were rope knotted into a bun and pinned down to the head as tightly as possible. Many Sebastian products were layered to achieve a high-shine, but Liquid Steel Concentrated Styler was what made the look: Di Tommaso brushed the Liquid Steel directly to models’ heads, lacquering the hair into place.

If you’ve been working on your braiding skills, good news! The popularity of plaits will continue through Spring 2013—however the variation shown at Jean-Pierre Braganza brings a whole new level of complexity to the style. Featuring a stark middle part and two braids—one interior, one exterior—the double look was described as “pretty, but weird at the same time” by Pantene Pro-V consulting stylist Justin German. After prepping the hair with Pantene Pro-V Normal to Thick Straighten and Smooth Crème ($6, at drugstores) he separated a section of hair at the crown for the interior cornrow braid, which ran down the back of the head.
