It’s no easy feat to apply makeup for work during the summertime, especially when heat often results in runny makeup and super shiny skin. Who wants to spend a ton of time putting on makeup in the morning only to have it messed up after a short walk from the subway to the office? Piling on makeup to hide those little imperfections when it’s so hot outside is definitely not ideal, and unfortunately not many of us can rock the “I woke up like this” look for the office. So, how do we get the best of both worlds? Well this week, Beauty Panel tackles the office beauty look for the summer and show us tips and tricks on how to stand out while still looking professional.

While warmer weather is almost always associated with changing up how you do your makeup, our hair works the same way. With the temperature finally starting to feel like we can finally kiss winter good-bye, spring makes for the ideal season to try a new hairstyle—who wants to wear a top knot in the freezing cold! Whether you’re inspired by the Spring 2014 runways or your fave A-list star, keeping the hair off the back of our necks is one thing we’re most certainly doing this season. But since we don’t have hairstylists on hand, we asked our Beauty Panel members to show us their favourite (and easy to do) spring hairstyles and how to achieve them. In the clutches of this terrible, no good, very bad winter we’ll take any excuse to think about warmer temps. While it’s a little premature to bust out the short shorts and crop tops, we’ve found a way to inject some summertime ease into our lives thanks to our new favourite beauty trend: orange lipstick.

If you’ve never considered wearing a bright orange lip, the Spring 2014 runways provided a multitude of different ways to make it work. Prabal Garung and John Galliano both opted for a matte orange lip with slicked-back hair to create a clean and uncomplicated look, perfect for a casual Friday at the office. Dsquared2, on the other hand, showed the versatility of the colour, using a coral-orange lip with a smoky eye and ‘80s pageant queen hair to create quite the glamorous look.

We’ve all been there. Your alarm didn’t go off, you overslept and now there’s no time to wash and style your hair. Or maybe you were a little too enthusiastic with styling products and you’re starting to resemble Beyoncé at the Grammys—and not in a good way! When it comes to having a bad hair day, it can be hard to beat the inevitable pity party that arises when your hair falls flat. But, considering that even celebrities experience the occasional bad hair day (thanks, gossip magazines!) there’s no reason to fret when things turn critical. It seems like everyone and their mother is sporting a dramatic red lip these days. Sigh. Don’t get us wrong – we can appreciate a good dramatic pop of colour just as much as the next gal. But there are times when a dramatic dark colour right on the ol’ kisser is exactly what the doctor ordered. Mastering how to do a bold lip can be a bit challenging, err you end up looking like a goth. Luckily, our beauty panellists are here to help.

As seen on runways around the world, the bold dark lip is hot hot hot. What separates the trend from previous lip treatments is a certain dangerous feel – a real femme fatale look that has an aspect of a brooding starlet. It’s not necessarily prissy, but can still be worn for a night out on the town. What’s not to love? Hollywood starlet favourite Philip Lim showcased an earthy brown matte lip, and a deep wine stained burgundy was on display at both Zac Posen and Pamela Roland. Derek Lam and Cynthia Rowley both favoured darker shades of violet while Vivienne Tam went for a dramatic ebony lip.

Ah, the holidays! Forget last minute shopping scrambles—the real frenzy comes when your all-business daytime face needs to transform into a head-turning party look in the blink of an eye. With very little time to prepare it’s imperative you have some expert advice on the makeup products and beauty tools you’ll need to be party-ready in a jiffy.

Ideally we’d all have a fairy godmother to wave her wand and make us instantly holiday-stunning, but realistically a well-edited beauty bag will do the trick. Is there a better holiday than Halloween? It’s the one day of the year that we have free reign to create—and live the life of!—an alter ego, the more outlandish the better. From sci-fi heroes to spooky spirits, everything is possible on Halloween, especially when you have a makeup bag full of product to help you out. As anyone who recalls a childhood full of pans of primary-coloured face paint, you’ll agree that the best costumes are the ones that come with a crazy makeup requirement.
