There’s no question that films these days are playing a large role in the fashion and beauty industry (think Net-A-Porter x Hunger Games and M.A.C x Maleficent). So it’s kind of expected to see us all regularly channeling our favourite film heroines, especially when these collaborations make it so easy to cop. And who doesn’t want to borrow  some of that leading lady confidence? While rocking our favourite movie looks is usually saved for Halloween, that doesn’t mean we can’t try to incorporate movie-inspired hair and makeup in our everyday lives. So this week, we asked Beauty Panel to do just that. Summer usually calls for bold and bright nails (hello, neon!). However, on the Spring 2014 runways, neutral shades and pastels were getting just as much buzz in the nail world (like at Altuzarra and Alexander Wang). Trends aside, we all have our own preferences when it comes to manicures, whether we like to keep them neutral or loud and colourful. To help with a little beauty inspiration for this summer (because who doesn’t like more options?), this week we asked our Beauty Panel to share their favourite summer nail looks, from florals to pastels to one of Spring 2014’s hottest trends: metallics.

In the clutches of this terrible, no good, very bad winter we’ll take any excuse to think about warmer temps. While it’s a little premature to bust out the short shorts and crop tops, we’ve found a way to inject some summertime ease into our lives thanks to our new favourite beauty trend: orange lipstick.

If you’ve never considered wearing a bright orange lip, the Spring 2014 runways provided a multitude of different ways to make it work. Prabal Garung and John Galliano both opted for a matte orange lip with slicked-back hair to create a clean and uncomplicated look, perfect for a casual Friday at the office. Dsquared2, on the other hand, showed the versatility of the colour, using a coral-orange lip with a smoky eye and ‘80s pageant queen hair to create quite the glamorous look.

Kim Kardashian’s style may be constantly evolving, but when it comes to beauty, she’s had her makeup routine on lock since day one. That flawless complexion and enviable bone structure owes a great deal of credit to the magic of makeup. But you don’t need a makeup artist to look like Kim—just a few simple contouring tricks can make all the difference in making your features pop.

Sure, the idea of contouring and bronzing can evoke flashbacks to high school beauty disasters: if done incorrectly you risk looking like a pumpkin or and ‘80s prom queen. There’s no shame in letting the day of love inspire a change in your beauty routine, especially when flowers, hearts and anything red or pink make for ideal hair and makeup looks. How’s your January been so far? As the unofficial month of fitness and healthy habits, chances are you’ve made an effort to add more gym visits into your schedule over the last four weeks. Somehow when fall rolls through we’re so enamored by the deep-toned lipsticks and warm eyeshadows that we tend to neglect our cheeks. While we wish we could still embrace the bronze-y glow of summer, when winter comes calling nothing looks better than flushed, “just in from the ski slopes” cheeks.

As the colder months tend to dull our complexion, we thank the beauty gods for blush to highlight the cheekbones and brighten up our faces. Wine-stained shades ranging from rosy-pink to deep-plum provide the perfect complement to the berry and jewel tones that we’re also coveting for our clothes .
