Summer usually calls for bold and bright nails (hello, neon!). However, on the Spring 2014 runways, neutral shades and pastels were getting just as much buzz in the nail world (like at Altuzarra and Alexander Wang). Trends aside, we all have our own preferences when it comes to manicures, whether we like to keep them neutral or loud and colourful. To help with a little beauty inspiration for this summer (because who doesn’t like more options?), this week we asked our Beauty Panel to share their favourite summer nail looks, from florals to pastels to one of Spring 2014’s hottest trends: metallics.

When it comes to beauty, many of us form bad habits because realistically, very few of us actually know what we’re doing right from the get-go (unless you grew up with a makeup artist or skincare expert, in which case this doesn’t really apply to you). But with more and more beauty bloggers and vloggers speaking out and sharing their tips and tricks on social media platforms, beauty newbies nowadays know a thing or two about things like the right way to apply mascara or how to tame frizzy hair in the summer. Since we at FASHION have a panel of beauty gurus on hand, this week we asked our Beauty Panel members to share the best beauty advice they’re ever been given, or the beauty secret that changed their life.

While warmer weather is almost always associated with changing up how you do your makeup, our hair works the same way. With the temperature finally starting to feel like we can finally kiss winter good-bye, spring makes for the ideal season to try a new hairstyle—who wants to wear a top knot in the freezing cold! Whether you’re inspired by the Spring 2014 runways or your fave A-list star, keeping the hair off the back of our necks is one thing we’re most certainly doing this season. But since we don’t have hairstylists on hand, we asked our Beauty Panel members to show us their favourite (and easy to do) spring hairstyles and how to achieve them. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: statement lip is the perennial trend in all things beauty. A look that works for both day and night, we can see why ladies everywhere are opting for this on-trend lip to up the glam factor day-to-day. While a punchy orange is one of this season’s beauty trends and a fave amongst the A-list, some stars aren’t following the norm and debuting more outrageous lip shades with Rihanna leading the pack. There is no doubt that Riri is a big fan of unusual lipstick shades (her most recent being green!), but many other celebrities are following suit including Joan Smalls who rocked a vibrant purple hue to last week’s Met Gala.

Is spring finally here? While we may still be hoping for weather that lets us ditch our wintery layers, there’s nothing stopping us from getting our skin ready for the season. In practice, it may actually be smarter to get a head start on your spring skincare routine: new products always take a week or two to start working and frankly, it’s nice to wake up and start the day with light, fresh layers of skincare products and makeup. Dress for the weather you want, not the weather you have, right?

Well, this week, the Beauty Panel partnered up with Biotherm to do just that. Our beauty blogging experts spent the last month testing the Biotherm Aquasource skincare line, all in a quest to uncover the best way to get a fresh-faced look for spring. While makeup can certainly brighten any look, having a great base—your skin!—makes all the difference. It’s the reason why both fresh skin and the no-makeup makeup look made the list of our top beauty trends for Spring 2014. Makeup artists like Pat McGrath and Diane Kendal spent their time backstage prepping models’ skin with masques, serums, BB creams and moisturizers, which resulted in truly fresh-faced looks on the runway.

Ah, white eyeliner! If you came of age in the mid-’90s, white eyeliner was basically the only makeup necessary. While we may have layered it on in a thick, not-quite-cat-eye swipe with little interest in technique or precision, white eyeliner was popular because it’s really so forgiving. No matter how you use it, white liner or shadow is guaranteed to make your eyes pop. Which is precisely why it appeared on so many runways at the Spring 2014 shows. From a soft wash of all-over white at Altuzarra to graphic lines at Kate Spade to BCBG’s romantic white cat-eye, it’s clear this makeup trend is back and better than ever. If you’ve ever spent more than 60 seconds inside a Sephora, you know how quickly things can rack up. A Guerlain bronzer here, a Chanel lipstick there, maybe even a Nars eyeshadow quad or two—and suddenly your makeup bag is worth more than your designer handbag. There’s a reason some the world’s most famous faces don’t look their age. (And it’s not just thanks to intense daily booty-busting workouts.) If fashion and beauty are all about self-expression, nail polish is certainly the easiest way to experiment with new trends. Sitting at the top of our “must-try” list for this season is texture: from matte polish to bejeweled decals, it’s all about adding a major commotion to our digits and fueling the fires of individualism.

While nail art fanatics have many a DIY way to add texture to a regular manicure, beauty brands are also on board, debuting multi-dimensional collections like Essie’s Encrusted Treasures and innovative formulas OPI’s Liquid Sand. Meaning there’s an endless array of ways to outfit our digits and regardless of creativity or skill level we all can put a creative spin on our paws.
