Who Were Andy Warhol’s Superstars? A Guide to Underground Cinema’s Mysterious Muses
21st century fame wouldn’t be what it is without the influence of Andy Warhol. Because of him, we care about the personality of the star just as much, if not more than, the work they create. If he were alive today, Warhol would absolutely be consumed with celeb blogs, weekly tabloids, and hot takes on […]

Afternoon Delight: This updated cat-eye just screams Marilyn Monroe
While the nineties may have been the decade de rigueur for the past few seasons, that doesn’t mean you should give up the ultimate sixties face-framer: the cat-eye. Synonymous with classic Hollywood celebs like Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn (who while polar opposites, both suited the style so well), the cat-eye gets an update in […]

Confessions of a fashion addict: How to shop like an editor, avoid buyer’s remorse and never pay full price again
“It just started today. Everything’s an additional 50 per cent off,” I overhear our fashion editor-at-large, Zeina Esmail, telling a visiting New York publicist about a nearby end-of-season sell-off. “You can score a pair of Manolos for 200 bucks.” I make a note of this (I could use some new pumps) and share a knowing glance with my FASHION editor colleagues. Lunch plans have just been made. Esmail, meanwhile, is on to discussing another fashion find: a $2,000 Proenza Schouler sweater she scored online for $89. By now, the shopping tips are coming fast and furious, and a small crowd has formed around our resident style sage. This is Esmail in her element.
At the FASHION offices, Esmail is known for her cool style, impeccable taste and complete and utter obsession with shopping—an occupational hazard of being a stylist and professional shopper. “It’s definitely part of my job. I shop for work all the time, so I stumble on sales, but I’m a constant hunter,” she says. “I’m always looking for things to buy and watching for when I can score a major deal. It’s kind of a weird mental illness in a way, because I can’t stop.” Case in point: At a recent designer shoe sale (where styles by Nicholas Kirkwood, Alaïa and Balmain were marked down to a frenzy-inducing $99), while the rest of us were splurging on two or three pairs, Esmail went home with 22. “I couldn’t just buy three. I went back and I went back,” she says. “I have an addictive personality, so if I get an idea in my head I don’t know how to let it go. I got home and my husband was like, ‘What did you do?’ I get carried away in the moment. It’s my biggest enemy and my best friend.”

From the May 2013 issue: The Graduate inspires our seductive “Animal Attraction” photo shoot
See photos from The Graduate-inspired photo shoot »
A seasoned seductress, her young prey, his true love—characters inspired by the ’60s classic The Graduate—gather for a cinematic take on the season’s trends. In this photo shoot from our May 2013 issue, we tapped legendary Canadian model Donna Demarco, still a smokeshow at 68-years-old, to pose as a latter day Mrs. Robinson alongside our version of Dustin Hoffman’s Benjamin Braddock, Matt Apedaile. Cast in the role of his age-appropriate love: Canadian favourite Addison Gill’s innocence in Spring 2013 Prada is pitch perfect.

Like a page out of Diana Vreeland’s mid-sixties book, photographer Chris Nicholls and stylist Zeina Esmail proved that a relative absence of colour doesn’t mean you can’t make a statement, combining some of Spring 2013’s greatest standouts from Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana and Michael Kors with Twilight Zone style backdrops in this May 2013 issue photo shoot. And that hair? Eat your heart out, Vidal Sassoon.

Mad Men season 6: We preview Sunday’s premiere with 18 late-sixties era photos from the new season
See the Mad Men season 6 photos »
After last season’s never-endingly delayed start, I feel a bit trained to wait a long time for a new jolt of Mad Men. So much so, that Sunday’s season 6 premiere feels like a bonus and a half. When we left Don, Megan, Roger, Joan et al in 1967, tensions were running high. There was a suicide, a puberty scare, LSD, another affair, and as always, more drinking. There were also, as always, era-correct costumes for us sartorial minded watchers to sink our teeth into.
As we first spotted with Mad Men’s season 6 preview photos released back in January, the swinging late sixties are to be embraced with sky-high bouffant hair, empire waists and sideburns so good, they incited their own mock Twitter account.

Get ready to peel back those layers, kids. Here comes the sun. Spring 2013 is finally upon us, and with it comes an onslaught of new fashionable desires. To prep, we’ve distilled a month long of fashion shows from New York, London, Milan and Paris and have brought you the top 15 trends you’ll need bookmarked.
From Marc Jacobs’ 1960s Edie Sedgwick infatuation to Dries Van Noten and Phillip Lim’s ode to 1990s grunge, believe us, we’ll have plenty of Spring 2013 fashion goodness to work from. Aside from the various time stamps, designers found inspiration worldwide this season: Japan (Prada, Haider Ackermann and Etro were all Asian-inspired), Italy (Proenza Schouler and Altuzarra put heels on the gladiator sandal), the US West Coast (beach prints reigned supreme at Victoria Beckham), the travelling music festival (Coachella 2013 brought to you by Tory Burch and Isabel Marant?) and even underwater (say hello to Seapunk, your newest fascination).

Banana Republic’s Mad Men Spring 2013 ads star Coco Rocha as Megan Draper
See the Banana Republic Mad Men ads starring Coco Rocha »
If the Spring 2013 runways were any indication, the 1960s are trendier than ever—a fact which can at least in some part be attributed to the ever growing popularity of Mad Men.
Capitalizing on this, as well as the popularity of its last two collaborative collections, Banana Republic is set to launch the third installment of Banana Republic Mad Men next Wednesday February 27.
The latest Banana Republic Mad Men collection is inspired by the series’ newest heroine, Megan Draper (played by Canadian actress, Jessica Paré) as well as the series’ newest phase in time: the late 1960s. Bright colours and bold prints dominate the collection and have us singing “Zou Bisou Bisou” all over again. The just-released ads starring Coco Rocha couldn’t say it better. Gone are the ultra-feminine Betty Draper-inspired full skirts of collections past and hello op-art prints and slim silhouettes!

Is Mad Men embracing ’70s style for season 6? The bouffants are getting bigger and sideburns are officially a thing
See all the Mad Men season six preview photos »
If you’re counting, there are just eleven Sundays to go before the return of Mad Men. That’s right: the sixth season will premiere on April 7 and already speculation is running rampant about what’s to come. Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner has always been extremely secretive about upcoming plot lines but this morning a series of photos were released to promote the show. Much to our delight, the perfectly staged black and white shots offer some insights as to what Don Draper and friends might be up to for season six.
First of all: The hair! Before we discuss what’s going on with the ladies, take moment to digest Pete Campbell’s new sideburns. His very-’70s hairstyle is already a fan favourite, considering that it took only a few hours to be commemorated with a Twitter account.
As for Megan and Betty, both are wearing the sort of hair that Lana Del Rey dreams about: voluminous bouffants complete with curled tendrils at the front. It’s very Priscilla Presley—and a style she was known for at the end of the ’60s. Which really only adds to the speculation that season six may jump ahead a year or two from where season five left off in 1967.
