Seventies-inspired Fashion Will Be Everywhere This Summer
Seventies-era fashion is having a moment. Brands such as Gucci, Paco Rabanne and Vivetta are drawing inspiration from the decade’s signature styles, including wide-leg pants, cartoon daisy prints and dramatic swirls. The ’70s were a time of experimentation in fashion, and we’re seeing that same sense of adventure re-emerge for this summer. According to Afterpay, […]

All Hail the Return of Corduroy
There’s something to be said about the return of corduroy this fall, the casual ribbed sister to lustrous velvet glamour. Many associate this nostalgic fabric with the sartorial naive, which makes it perfect for this current moment where trends such as clogs and prairie dresses are all about deflecting sex appeal. Spotted on the Fall […]

Is Our Obsession With Nostalgic Fashion Trends a Coping Mechanism?
I grew up watching Three’s Company and cultivating the conviction that being a grown-up meant living with a couple of good-looking roommates somewhere near a beach and getting embroiled in misunderstandings involving double entendres and a swinging kitchen door. But mostly it meant that I would grow up to wear the hell out of ’70s-style […]

Tie-Dye Is Back, Whether You Like It or Not
With the recent re-emergence of ‘90s fashion trends – first came chokers, then oversized hoop earrings, fanny packs and most recently track pants – it shouldn’t surprise anyone that, newsflash, tie-dye is back. Originally founded on ancient resist-dyeing techniques – which consists of protecting certain parts of a fabric so the dye doesn’t reach it […]

Check out the exclusive Matthew Williamson makeup kit for Benefit Cosmetics (Plus: Pre-shop details!)
See the Benefit and Matthew Williamson makeup kit now! »
What do you do to celebrate a 15-year career as one of Britain’s leading fashion designers? If you’re Matthew Williamson, you collaborate with Benefit Cosmetics to create a limited edition makeup kit! The exclusive-to-Sephora set, titled The Rich is Back, contains a selection of eyeshadows, a mascara, a cheek powder and a lip gloss. Though Williamson prefers a more natural face at his shows, the range of shades chosen for the Benefit kit allows for both a casual and daring look.
In seeking inspiration for the makeup kit, Matthew Williamson explored his print archive and chose vibrant shades reminiscent of ’70s cocktail parties and hedonistic discos. “This high-octane makeup kit encapsulates some of my favorite iconic prints and the fun-loving, light-hearted spirit of the Benefit girl,” Williamson said via press release. The designer, who is widely know for his obsession with colour, chose a bright kaleidoscope print with peacock feathers and pink flowers for the makeup kit’s packaging.

Is Mad Men embracing ’70s style for season 6? The bouffants are getting bigger and sideburns are officially a thing
See all the Mad Men season six preview photos »
If you’re counting, there are just eleven Sundays to go before the return of Mad Men. That’s right: the sixth season will premiere on April 7 and already speculation is running rampant about what’s to come. Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner has always been extremely secretive about upcoming plot lines but this morning a series of photos were released to promote the show. Much to our delight, the perfectly staged black and white shots offer some insights as to what Don Draper and friends might be up to for season six.
First of all: The hair! Before we discuss what’s going on with the ladies, take moment to digest Pete Campbell’s new sideburns. His very-’70s hairstyle is already a fan favourite, considering that it took only a few hours to be commemorated with a Twitter account.
As for Megan and Betty, both are wearing the sort of hair that Lana Del Rey dreams about: voluminous bouffants complete with curled tendrils at the front. It’s very Priscilla Presley—and a style she was known for at the end of the ’60s. Which really only adds to the speculation that season six may jump ahead a year or two from where season five left off in 1967.

Spring beauty report 2012: Retro influences
By Lesa Hannah and Sarah Daniel
Liquid liner hasn’t lost its momentum, but makeup artists left last season’s ’60s mod influence behind and moved back a decade to the ’50s, with inspirations like Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor. At Jonathan Saunders, artiste Lucia Pieroni gave models a Stepford streak, inspired by a mid-century Miami housewife who likes her Valium, she says. At Marni, makeup artist Tom Pecheux applied a cinnamon-coloured flick instead of the standard noir, which was inspired by a terracotta clutch in the collection and brought “a sophisticated finish to the face,” he says. Hair-stylists also mined the past for ideas—from the ’20s to the ’70s, and every decade in between. At Diane von Furstenberg, teased ’60s French twists were “textured so it’s rustic and earthy, and quite simple in shape,” says coiffeur Orlando Pita. But at Jean Paul Gaultier, it was an old photograph that led to the loose wartime rolls that hair guru Guido Palau fastened to the top of the head. Our favourite was the sterile-looking ’50s faux bob at Jil Sander, in all its vacuum-sealed nurse practitioner perfection.

Inside last night’s Interior Design Show opening party: The who’s who of Canada’s design scene and Karim Rashid DJing from within in a canary yellow cage
Last night the Metro Toronto Convention Centre was brimming with the who’s who of Canada’s design scene, there for the opening night party of the country’s largest contemporary design fair, the Interior Design Show. Dashing gents, like fashion designer Philip Sparks and veteran FASHION photographer George Whiteside, and sophisticated design ladies—Sarah Richardson, Dee Dee Taylor Hannah (in Christopher Kane, no less), Love It or List It’s Hilary Farr—sipped flutes of Veuve and paraded along the rows upon rows of out-of-this-world design.
