Dreaming of Getting Away? New Toronto-based Loungewear Line Anushka Inspires Travel Fantasies
“Everyone’s dreaming about travel,” says Anya Georgijevic, creative director of the newly launched resortwear line, Anushka. Georgijevic is an avid globetrotter who calls Toronto home. And it’s there, pre-pandemic, where she started musing on an approach to a fashion label that spoke to wanderlust and liberation. Bodily, that is. Comparisons between fashion and interior design […]

Charting the History of the Yellow Dress, from the Red Carpet to the Spring 2017 Runway
Designers must have been in good spirits because they illuminated Spring 2017 runways with cheerful yellow fashions. As they say, go on get happy. Summer is finally on the horizon and street style types are adding what Pantone dubbed “primrose yellow” into their ensembles. What’s in a shade, you ask? It’s a not-so-subtle reminder to look, and even dress, […]

Jessica Chastain vs. Milla Jovovich: Who wore it best on the Cleopatra red carpet at Cannes?
See these Cannes 2013 red carpet looks up close »
See all the best Cannes 2013 red carpet photos so far »
The Cannes Film Festival is not only an event to premiere new films, it’s also a time to celebrate the timeless films. In commemoration of Cleopatra’s 50th anniversary, many stars, including Jessica Chastain and Milla Jovovich, attended a special edition screening of this classic film last night. Though the two starlets dressed in very different looks (dark versus light, lots of skin versus completely covered), both of these ladies bewitched every single camera in their own glamorous way.
Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain may have been the luckiest girl on the Cannes red carpet. The co-host of the Cleopatra screening donned a Bulgari diamond and sapphire necklace and a matching ring that was given to Elizabeth Taylor by Richard Burton as a token of his love. Looking every bit as regal, Chastain allowed her exquisite jewellery to take the spotlight and opted for a simple, long sleeve ivory Versace gown from the Spring 2013 collection, paired with nude platform heels. With finger waves and side-swept hair, Chastain dazzled the red carpet with her natural beauty.

Linday Lohan’s Liz & Dick Los Angeles premiere look might have actually not been terrible
Lindsay Lohan is no stranger to the spotlight. While the past few years have been all but flattering, it seems that she may have just made her first step towards a fashionable comeback. At the Los Angeles premiere of the TV biopic Liz & Dick in which she plays Elizabeth Taylor, she was fairly successful at upping the Old Hollywood quotient.
Lindsay Lohan opted for a champagne silk floor length gown by Donna Dashini that featured multiple cutouts down her chest with small red beads dangling onto her skin. Lohan accessorized with vintage jewellery and a fur stole. While it may have hugged awkwardly in some places, the dress certainly channeled Taylor’s famed va-va-voom.

A countdown of some of the most expensive celebrity auction items ever to go under the hammer
Celebrity jewels and clothing have become quite the draw at auctions, with dresses and jewels that once belonged to the rich and famous easily fetching millions. Just last week, two hats worn by Kate Middleton hit the auction block, raising more than $11,000 for charity. Daphne Guinness also auctioned off some of her prized fashion pieces in the name of charity, as did Elizabeth Taylor, whose collection of clothing and jewels garnered a record breaking $157 million. The Taylor auction also attracted several celebrity bids—Kim Kardashian purchased three of Liz’s Lorraine Schwartz diamond and jade bangles for $64,000, and Coco Rocha surprised herself when she walked away with Taylor’s yellow and pink Givenchy jumpsuit that she wore to the Met gala this year. We’ve rounded up 10 celebrity fashion picks that fetched a pretty penny at auction, and we think the piece that went for the biggest bank might surprise you.

The cat-eye: We look to icons of different eras for inspiration—plus, tips for painting your own
The cat-eye is having a moment. Celia Ellenberg takes us through its many versions over the years and finds out how to execute them.
While spring tends to signal the arrival of all beauty things light and bright, the runways told a different story this season as designers embraced a certain graphic cosmetic accoutrement that’s seen an impressive evolution over the past few centuries. Behold, the rebirth of the cat-eye. Black-rimmed upper lash lines were the makeup look of choice at shows such as Ruffian and Dolce & Gabbana, and while the backstage miracle workers made it look easy, mastering the perfect flick on your own can be a different story. We’ve gathered eight eyeliner icons and asked Hourglass Cosmetics’ artistic director Gina Brooke and makeup artist Pati Dubroff to weigh in on whether the liquid pen is truly mightier than the kohl pencil when it comes to crafting the perfect winged liner. Because, according to Brooke, “if you use the right products, getting the look is not an issue.”

Peplumed waists and squared shoulders: Fashion’s latest erogenous zones
Fashion show audiences are a mix of customers and the media, and we each tend to read what comes down the runway differently. I am looking for what is new. Customers are looking for that and more. They want to know that the expensive piece they bought last season isn’t going to look dated. So when I told a young fashion enthusiast after the Mugler show that the collection was full of peplums, she practically did a cartwheel. “I can still wear them?” she beamed. Uh huh. And all the rest of us who haven’t bought one yet might want to join in the fun. Of course we probably won’t go quite as far as the undulating peplums at Mugler. In white with fox sleeves and downy helmets, the overall effect was a bird in flight.

Think Lindsay Lohan is the right choice to play Elizabeth Taylor? We take it to a vote!
Much to the serious chagrin of some (including us), Lindsay Lohan has been confirmed to play the role of Elizabeth Taylor in an upcoming Lifetime biopic called Liz and Dick—provided she fulfills the requirements of her probation. The film will centre on the tumultuous relationship between the violet-eyed Hollywood princess and her on-again off-again husband of 12 years, Richard Burton.
Though Lohan might have proved her acting chops in The Parent Trap and Freaky Friday remakes (we’re slightly serious), it’s been a while since we’ve seen her do anything noteworthy. But hey, we’d rather see Lohan in the role than her rumoured competition, Megan Fox. But that’s not saying much? What do you think?

Spring beauty report 2012: Retro influences
By Lesa Hannah and Sarah Daniel
Liquid liner hasn’t lost its momentum, but makeup artists left last season’s ’60s mod influence behind and moved back a decade to the ’50s, with inspirations like Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor. At Jonathan Saunders, artiste Lucia Pieroni gave models a Stepford streak, inspired by a mid-century Miami housewife who likes her Valium, she says. At Marni, makeup artist Tom Pecheux applied a cinnamon-coloured flick instead of the standard noir, which was inspired by a terracotta clutch in the collection and brought “a sophisticated finish to the face,” he says. Hair-stylists also mined the past for ideas—from the ’20s to the ’70s, and every decade in between. At Diane von Furstenberg, teased ’60s French twists were “textured so it’s rustic and earthy, and quite simple in shape,” says coiffeur Orlando Pita. But at Jean Paul Gaultier, it was an old photograph that led to the loose wartime rolls that hair guru Guido Palau fastened to the top of the head. Our favourite was the sterile-looking ’50s faux bob at Jil Sander, in all its vacuum-sealed nurse practitioner perfection.

They said/We said: Elizabeth Taylor’s jewellery auction breaks records, raising $116 million
Last night in New York, Christie’s auction of the legendary Elizabeth Taylor’s jewellery shattered records for private jewellery sales and raised $116 million. Known for her penchant for expensive and extravagant baubles, the late actress’ collection included pieces by some of the world’s most famous jewellers including Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Chopard.

They said/We said: Amy Winehouse’s dress from her Back to Black album cover is auctioned off for $67,500
Since her death in July, Amy Winehouse has been remembered not only for her music but also for her vintage-inspired style. The singer’s influence was seen in magazines and even on the Chanel runway where Karl Lagerfeld styled his models’ hair in Winehouse’s signature messy beehive. After receiving Winehouse’s parents’ blessing, Fred Perry has posthumously released Winehouse’s collaboration with the brand. Today the red and white dress she wore on the cover of her Back to Black album was auctioned off in London for $67, 500. Other items in the auction included a dress designed by Cristobal Balenciaga for Elizabeth Taylor—which actually sold for less than Winehouse’s dress!—as well as replicas of Princess Diana’s Emanuel wedding dress and Clive Shilton shoes which sold for just over Winehouse’s bid.
