Jessica Chastain vs. Milla Jovovich: Who wore it best on the Cleopatra red carpet at Cannes?

The Cannes Film Festival is not only an event to premiere new films, it’s also a time to celebrate the timeless films. In commemoration of Cleopatra’s 50th anniversary, many stars, including Jessica Chastain and Milla Jovovich, attended a special edition screening of this classic film last night. Though the two starlets dressed in very different looks (dark versus light, lots of skin versus completely covered), both of these ladies bewitched every single camera in their own glamorous way.
Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain may have been the luckiest girl on the Cannes red carpet. The co-host of the Cleopatra screening donned a Bulgari diamond and sapphire necklace and a matching ring that was given to Elizabeth Taylor by Richard Burton as a token of his love. Looking every bit as regal, Chastain allowed her exquisite jewellery to take the spotlight and opted for a simple, long sleeve ivory Versace gown from the Spring 2013 collection, paired with nude platform heels. With finger waves and side-swept hair, Chastain dazzled the red carpet with her natural beauty.

Mad Men Recap: SCDP pitches Jaguar, Pete makes an indecent proposal and our hearts bleed for Joan and Peggy
Previously on Mad Men, we worried about Lane’s money problems, saw Harry reconnect with a Hare Krishna’d–out Paul and discovered that Roger knows he’s Kevin’s dad. Most importantly, we were treated to the delightful punchline of “a guy and a bombshell walk into a midtown bar” as Don and Joan got business-drunk and bonded. In this episode, we see that Don was serious about his promise to work on Jaguar around the clock: we pick up with him and some freelance creatives hunkered down in the boardroom plastered with inspiration boards. So let’s see what they came up with…

Quotable: Washing your face with tap water is so last season
Though we’ve certainly dreamt of partaking in over-the-top beauty indulgences—like Cleopatra’s rumoured milk baths—it always seemed like more of a luxury than a legitimate change in regimen. However, we’ve just heard something that may sway us to consider a rather luxe method for face washing: French model Aymeline Valade confessed a preference for bottled water […]

One last dispatch from Paris just arrived at our desk: a rundown of makeup used at the 2011 le Bal des Débutantes at the Hotel de Crillon in Paris. M.A.C Cosmetics was the exclusive makeup partner for the ball, and responsible for making the 23 debutantes look flawless. The main inspiration (seen here) shows a deep smoky eye, lots of lashes, and a youthful glow across the cheek—after all, most of the debs are still only 16!

View our studio invasion »Is there a better inspiration than Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra? We thought not, until Arthur Mendonça set the vision for beauty at his Spring 2012 show: Cleopatra emerging from water. Eddie Malter, official makeup artist for L’Oreal Paris, used H.I.P. High Intensity Pigment Eyeshadow Duos “224” and “207,” blending layers of blue, turquoise, and silver to achieve the effect of water reflecting on the face—a look certainly worthy of modern Egyptian goddesses. Brows were left natural and lips subtle, done in a beige Infallible Le Rouge lip colour (“814”) and covered with gloss.

They said/We said: Elizabeth Taylor’s legendary jewels to go up for auction
Who hasn’t dreamt of living the luxuriously fashionable life of Hollywood grand dame Elizabeth Taylor? From Cleopatra to Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Taylor dominated the big screen and captured the hearts of her stylish followers. Today, Christie’s officially announced they’ll be launching a landmark series of public exhibitions to display Taylor’s jewelry, fashion, accessories, decorative arts, and memorabilia that will eventually end with their sale.
Beginning in September, the collection will make stops in Moscow, London, Los Angeles, Dubai, Geneva, Paris, and Hong Kong. It’s then set to head to New York City for December 3, where a 10-day exhibition at Rockefeller Center will be followed by four consecutive days of auctions. In keeping with Taylor’s life-long devotion to humanitarian causes, a portion of all proceeds will be donated to the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, which she established in 1991.
Now, who isn’t looking forward to the glamorous-to-end-all-things-glamorous exhibit?
