If you can believe it, models wore actual makeup. Yes, as in more than just a quick swipe of moisturizer. So what better way to kick off the […]

New York Fashion Week backstage beauty: 57 pictures of the best manicures and nail art from the Spring 2014 shows
See the Spring 2014 nail art looks up close »
The nails at New York Fashion Week were right in tune with the ’90s minimalism style we saw on the Spring 2014 runways. Sheer is in, colour is out and the nail art trend seems to be winding down. The bare and buffed nails of last spring are still going strong for 2014, with designers like Altuzarra, Alexander Wang and Jeremy Laing opting for pale shades of pink, lavender or beige instead of punchy pastels and neon brights.

Inside Edmonton’s Fashion With Compassion gala: 38 photos of stylish people partying on and off the runway for a good cause
See photos from Fashion with Compassion »
Last week one of the biggest fashion fundraisers in Canada hit Edmonton’s Shaw Conference Centre with flutes of pink champagne and Old Hollywood panache. Luncheon and dinnertime gala fashion shows for more than 1,400 people at the 16th annual Syncrude Presents Fashion with Compassion benefit the $5-million expansion of the Sorrentino’s Compassion House, a home away from home for women traveling to Edmonton for breast cancer treatment.
While we think last year’s fashion highlight was watching superstar model Heather Marks (a Calgary native) open and close the shows, this year we can’t decide between all the cozy, grey velvet layering from Calgary-based designer Paul Hardy’s Fall 2012 collection, a lunchtime-only appearance from Mode Models Edmonton’s Kayley Chabot (I saw her last on the runway at Jill Stuart S/S ’13 during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week), or the uncensored and moving speech from former Compassion House guest and breast cancer survivor Brenda Kissel.

NYFW diary: Heavy lightness at Prabal Gurung, boxy restriction at Alexander Wang, a brush with Bill Cunningham, and Calla’s New York debut!
Day two of the shows began with another early rise, this time for Lacoste’s Fall show at Lincoln Center. The intrinsically sporty brand took an edgy spin for Fall, with designer Christophe Lemaire turning up the zip-age on the collection from the first look—a quilted high-necked vest over a long and oh-so smooth black leather jacket and colour-blocked leggings—to the last—a black leather mini with sleeves that zipped off above to give the appearance of a jacket worn just on the shoulders.
Next was Jill Stuart with a gussied up Nikki Reed and Olivia Palermo in the front row. The designer’s penchant for vintage girliness extended to a ‘60s soundtrack dubbed over models who showed off gold-threaded embroidery on turtleneck dresses, slim trousers, and pleated skirts. Continuing on the blowout spring trend, a peplum showed up mid-show to amp up the au courant.

NYFW diary: Prabal Gurung, Tommy Hilfiger’s anniversary show, and celeb-spotting at every turn
Saturday
While you lovelies were brunching and cocktailing over the weekend, I’ve was hard at work celeb-spotting at the Lincoln Centre (I spy: Carmen Electra, Kristin Bell, J. Lo, Bradley Cooper, Neil Patrick Harris, Aisha Tyler, Kelly Osbourne, Kimora Lee Simmons, Chris Bosh, Rebecca Romijn, Christina Hendricks, and so on, and so on), crossing Manhattan several times a day to attend the shows and trying to avoid the dreaded fashion week blisters that come with this job. Happily, Saturday was a sunny day in every way.Blue skies and Lacoste first up on the schedule. Creative director Christophe Lemaire nailed his version of sporty chic (lots of white, sleeveless polos, perforated short shorts and graphic prints) before heading off next season to Hermès. Was the orange carpet rolled out at Lacoste simply a cheeky way of jumping onto the saddle, so to speak?

Fashion news: U.S. introduces design piracy bill, Glee star doesn’t steal dresses and people still talking about Shiloh’s hair
Footwear designer Nicholas Kirkwood is designing two styles for London label Peter Pilotto, set to debut at London Fashion Week. Though Kirkwood has designed shoes for design duo Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos for the past two seasons, this is the first time the world at large will be able to get their hands on the collaboration. [WWD]
U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer has introduced a bill that would seek to protect fashion designers from infringement. The Innovative Design Protection and Piracy Prevention Act is supported by the CFDA. If the bill passes, those seeking damages “must show that his design provides “a unique, distinguishable, non-trivial and non-utilitarian variation over prior designs” and show that the copy is nearly indistinguishable from the original.
