Understanding summer 2014 fashion trends: Where they came from and how to wear them
Meet 5 of summer 2014’s fashion trends »
For better or worse, fashion is a revolving door of must-have items. Each season, a subtle shift in silhouette represents a shift in covetable items—the mini skirt made way for the midi skirt last fall, bringing with it the advent of the flat slip-on, the cropped jacket and so on and so forth.
This season, a few items emerge as must-haves to match summer 2014 fashion trends. Some are retakes on last year’s bets and some are wholly new. Here, we break down what they are, where they came from and how to wear ‘em. For good measure, we threw in some shopping suggestions too.

But does it really work? Testing out the athletic wear trend at a sports bar
See our Spring 2014 athletic trend guide »
The last time I had contact with a tube sock was sometime in 1989. I was in Grade 9—the last year I was compelled to take gym class. It would fall under the category of extravagant understatement to say that I was not athletically gifted, and it still seems to me that not having to play team sports is one of the major upsides of getting older. So, as soon as gym class was no longer obligatory, I dropped it and fled the other way, at suddenly Olympian velocity.
Today, beholding a tube sock—the madeleine of middle school—still prompts a Proustian montage of fear, lanyards and bad gymnasium lighting. Fair to say, then, that this season’s celebration of haute sportswear is not my (gym) bag. But my childhood experiences with sports, especially the team variety, did provide me with much training in the art of play-meets-public spectacle. It’s a talent I appear to be honing tonight as I take the designer athletic trend for a spin—decked out in fresh-from-the-runway Marni—on game night at Toronto’s Real Sports Bar & Grill.
Sportswear took to the shelves in America during the Great Depression—a time when people began to prize utility over fuss and ornament. Fashion historian Rebecca Arnold wrote that it’s been “mythologized as an expression of American national identity—as practical, rational and authentic.” This season’s “activewear,” however, provides a swift kick to the practical and the rational, adding fancy and glamour to sporty lines and energetic colour.

Afternoon Delight: An adorable crop top that doubles as a waterproof rash guard
I already have pretty special feeling for crops tops, so you can imagine how much I love one that does double duty. This adorably feminine ditty by Shoshanna is not merely a crop top, but a waterproof rash guard as well! Wear it while surfing or simply stomach-baring all weekend long. Either way, it gets […]

Your plus size guide to Spring 2014 trends: How to do crop tops, pastels and more!
After a slow start, it looks like spring is finally here. Months of ogling new arrivals has prepped us for taking the Spring 2014 trend plunge and while some (read: crop tops) seem made exclusively for those size zero girls, fear not: I’m here to teach you how to appropriate Spring 2014’s top trends for the plus size girl.
Since reawakening the drab wintery closet of a plus size girl may be limited as there aren’t as many on-trend offerings, it’s easy to get intimidated. And while your go-to retailer of extended sizes may not always have what you want, it takes a little ingenuity to scour the petite section for curvy-friendly pieces with a little give or the glorious two-way stretch. Before you go shopping, here’s some outfit inspiration on Spring 2014 trends for the girl with a little more.

Spring 2014 Must Haves: 3 instant updates that will bring your wardrobe into next season
With spring hovering that much closer, it’s finally time to recharge those warm weather wardrobes (insert smiley face emoji here). This season, there are a few key pieces that will easily transform your look, and we’re here to make that transition as easy as 1, 2, 3.
A ‘90s revival on the runways breathed new life into the slipdress, making it the ultimate wardrobe essential layered under knits, with plaid and camo. Meanwhile, sex appeal was made hip with the advent of the side-slit leather skirt on runways like Proenza Schouler and Reed Krakoff. The long-favoured bomber jacket also reappeared on the runway this season, in satin and with transparent touches at Marc by Marc Jacobs and Dries Van Noten. So get ready to ditch all that heavy winter gear and consider these three as your must-have items to elevate your look this spring

How to wear the athletic trend: 9 Style Panel for taking gym class to the streets
Some of the most on-trend styles can often be some of the most uncomfortable. We have spent many a night staggering home on sore feet from sky scraping heels or sitting in uncomfortably restricting body-con dresses. All in the name of fashion, right? So imagine our glee when the athletic trend, one synonymous with comfy yet fashionable kicks and sporty gear, was bigger than ever on the Spring 2014 runways—viva la trend sneaker!
Despite being one of the most comfortable and freeing trends, the athletic trend has some restrictions. With such a relaxed silhouette and casual aesthetic, you have to be sure to keep things boardroom appropriate and far away from the locker room: sweaty old gym leggings need not apply. Clean lines and a sleek minimalist silhouette as well as luxurious fabrics—think Marni’s bejewelled visors or Marc Jacobs’ silk gym shorts—make sporty cues translatable to all facets of life. Beyond the iconic raglan tee or sneakers, sporty riffs also exist in fabric being appropriated into typically girly or formal silhouettes. Just take a look at Tommy Hilfiger’s neoprene fit-and-flare dresses or Tom Ford’s billowing mesh tanks, both perfect for a night out on the town.
