The Best House Party Shoes and Socks for When the Host Makes You Take Your Heels Off (Ugh)
There are two kinds of holiday hosts: the ones who let you slip past the welcome mat with your shoes on, and the ones who don’t. We get that they’re avoiding dirty shoes traipsing through the den and spindly stilettos getting caught in the rug, but after hours of outfit prep, having to leave a […]

New York Fashion Week backstage beauty: 57 pictures of the best manicures and nail art from the Spring 2014 shows

The nails at New York Fashion Week were right in tune with the ’90s minimalism style we saw on the Spring 2014 runways. Sheer is in, colour is out and the nail art trend seems to be winding down. The bare and buffed nails of last spring are still going strong for 2014, with designers like Altuzarra, Alexander Wang and Jeremy Laing opting for pale shades of pink, lavender or beige instead of punchy pastels and neon brights.

Teen Choice Awards 2013: Our 6 top picks for best dressed on the red carpet
See the Teen Choice Award 2013 red carpet photos »
Last night’s Teen Choice Awards saw our favourite stars and starlets collecting surfboards for their various contributions to film, television and music. Show highlights included Harry Styles’ 3-second twerk-out and a special appearance by Miley Cyrus’ engagement ring. Buzz-worthy moments were had in the fashion department as well, with leather, crop tops and cutout dresses making their fair share of appearances on the blue carpet outside L.A.’s Gibson Amphitheatre.
Darren Criss of Glee and Lucy Hale of Pretty Little Liars played co-hosts for the evening. Hale, who collected a surfboard for Choice Summer TV Star, looked perfectly pretty in a mint green silk crop top and floral-embroidered skirt by Houghton. She let the outfit do the talking with her minimal makeup and laidback waves. Hale’s TV co-star Shay Mitchell ditched her signature bold colour palette for a simple yet sexy black and white jumpsuit by Jenni Kayne. In the beauty department the actress paired her new honey-coloured ombré hair with deep smoky eyes.

Designer profile: Kaelen’s effortless, elongated geometry
Yet another of the hot young Canadian talents burning up NYC, Toronto native Kaelen Farncombe is one expatriate you might want to keep dibs on. Relocating to the Big Apple to study fashion design at Parsons New School for Design a few years back, Farncombe honed her skills while interning for designers Stella McCartney and Jenni Kayne. Channeling the easy sophistication favoured by those two designers, Farncombe launched her own effortless line of standout separates, Kaelen, early last year. With only three collections to date, the 26-year-old has developed a reputation for spinning unusual inspirations (her starting point for Spring was literal tornado chasing) into richly modern pieces that seem to transcend trends. The young designer’s aesthetic is already easily identifiable: effortless, elongated geometry with pops of colour like fall 2011’s riffs on chartreuse, red and tangerine.
We chatted with Farncombe about her aesthetic, chasing tornadoes and the business of fashion.
