New York Fashion Week backstage beauty: 57 pictures of the best manicures and nail art from the Spring 2014 shows
See the Spring 2014 nail art looks up close »
The nails at New York Fashion Week were right in tune with the ’90s minimalism style we saw on the Spring 2014 runways. Sheer is in, colour is out and the nail art trend seems to be winding down. The bare and buffed nails of last spring are still going strong for 2014, with designers like Altuzarra, Alexander Wang and Jeremy Laing opting for pale shades of pink, lavender or beige instead of punchy pastels and neon brights.

They said/We said: Will Kanye West really be showing at New York fashion week?
Yesterday we reported that Sarah Jessica Parker is no longer working with Halston Heritage. Well, where one celebrity fashion venture ends another begins. For months now, rumours have been circulating that Kanye West is designing a high-end clothing line. Grazia is taking said rumours a step further, reporting that according to “excellent sources” the rapper is planning on showing his debut collection at New York Fashion Week. In keeping with West’s earlier statements about wanting to study at the prestigious Central Saint Martins, he is apparently getting some help from the big guns: knitwear designer and CSM grad Louise Goldin and the school’s master’s director Louise Wilson.

Fashion news: McQueen’s alien shoe inspiration, Marc Jacobs’ French honours, and how not to throw a fashion show
Do the shoes on the left look familiar? An intrepid commenter on Fashionista has uncovered the secret source of Alexander McQueen’s alien footwear—a video for ’70s rock band The Tubes’ “White Punks on Dope.” [Fashionista]
André Leon Talley smack talks Golden Globes style: “When you start watching red-carpet shows at 6:00 p.m. and don’t see a stunning dress until 9:00 p.m. — Julianna Margulies’s ruby paillette crepe robe de style with cutouts, by Narciso Rodriguez — it’s sad what passes for style in Hollywood.” [Vogue, via The Cut]

Fashion news: Polaroid goes gaga for Gaga, a new prez at Holt Renfrew and Louise Goldin does spiky shoes for Topshop
Matthew Williamson will launch a men’s capsule collection next month. The line, which features tees, cashmere sweaters and silk scarves in the UK designer’s signature prints and vivid colours, will expand to a seasonal collection. [Vogue UK]
Lady Gaga has been named creative director of a specialty line for Polaroid. You may be scratching your head as to why, but just think about the innovation: a camera that adjusts for those wearing an eye patch, or, as our Halifax blogger Nadine suggested, one “that only works when you happen to have forgotten to put on your pants.” [Racked]
Oh, but Jason Wu is also going to be designing cameras, so maybe this is going to turn into a thing. The designer will launch a line of digital point-and-shoots at New York Fashion Week next month. [Styleist]

London: Erdem, Jasper Conran, NewGen, Paul Smith Fall 2009
Best thing about LFW: all the different venues. More shows are held outside the great white tents than in them. From the Saatchi Gallery to the Science Museum, a repurposed industrial warehouse to a shabby-genteel flat, every day is a whipstitch through London’s patchwork heart. Yesterday morning was a favourite: Erdem (Montreal-born, London-adored) showcased his FW ‘09 collection in the Embankment Galleries at Somerset House. Down by the Thames and across a cobblestoned courtyard, it couldn’t have been better on a postcard.
